How To Make A Drawstring Bag From A Pillowcase

Drawstring bags are a simple means of transporting and/or storing things. Pirates used them to carry their gold doubloons and other treasures- or at least they do in the movies. Cowboys and gold miners did in the Wild West, too, didn’t they? Maybe their moms made them! LOL

Whether it is a nesting place for children’s toys or a quick way to get assorted items from “here” to “there,” drawstring bags are easy to make and do come in handy.
Baby gift basket with DIY drawstring mommy grab n go bags

Babies, babies, BABIES! Of all the celebrations, I love welcoming BABIES into the world. Our family has had three babies born in the past 6 months -all boys. They are still out numbered by our little girls 4-1, though.

We had a shower recently for one of the little lads and i decided to make a baby gift basket with “mommy grab ‘n go” bags inside. They were filled with essentials that mom might need when out and about with her little ones: diapers, baby wipes, bib, receiving blanket, pacifier and a trashbag to wrap up soiled diapers and wipes while on the road.

how to make a drawstring bag, sewing tips

The mommy grab n go bags are quite easy to make, even for novices.  I decided to buy some vivid blue and white pillow cases to make mine – since the baby was a boy. The wide border at the top of the cases is already a channel for the ribbon or drawstring to run through. Much less work!

How To Make a Drawstring Bag

Tools you will need: scissors, pins, sewing machine, thread, needle (for hand sewing,) iron (optional), 2 pillow cases, ribbon.

I will walk you through it detail but, in short, here are the steps:

  1. measure the pillowcase for size
  2. cut the pillowcase in half (for two bags, you will have leftover fabric*)
  3. pin each pillowcase in half, lengthwise, inside out.
  4. pin along the bottom
  5. using a sewing machine, sew across the bottom and up one side.
  6. STOP sewing as you get to the channel. DO NOT sew it closed.
  7. finish the edges of the open channel, by hand.
  8. turn the newly sewn bag rightside out.
  9. iron it.
  10. attach a safety pin to one end of the ribbon and feed it through the channel.
  11. remove the safety pin.
  12. fill it with “goodies”
  13. done!
*Notice that I used some of the leftover fabric to make a matching bow for the outside of the gift basket.
You can get two bags out of one pillow case with ease. Since the receiving blanket and multiple diapers would take up the bulk of the room,  I laid them on top of a pillowcase to get a feel for just how big they should be. You may want to do the same, assuming you know what will be stored in yours.

Tip: Lay a straight piece of paper on the fabric to use as a guide to cut the bottom of the bag in a straight line.
Cut all the way across the bottom of the pillowcase for the bottom seams of the bags.

Now, cut each side seam all the way down. You now have TWO separate pieces of fabric, each with a ready-made channel for the top where the ribbons will be run through.

Fold each bag in half, inside out, with the channels meeting each other. Remember NOT to sew that end shut. It has to be left open, edges finished off by hand, to run the drawstring ribbon through.

This is what the channel looks like.

Pin each bag and, using a sewing machine, sew across the bottom and up the side up to, but not including, the channel.
Turn the bag rightside out. Hand-sew the edges of the channel, folding the edges inside the channel, to make a nice neat piece.

 Iron them.

The ribbon or cord that you will use for the drawstring should be several inches longer than the channel on each end when the bag is laying out flat. You need substantial ends to be able to pull and tie them. I decided to use a pretty blue ribbon that would be tied in a bow.
Take a safety pin and attach it to the end of your ribbon. Now, thread it through the channel, leaving some of the ribbon hanging on one side and more on the other.

Fill the bags with all the goodies!

What other uses can you think of for drawstring bags?
Any thoughts on what else we can put in a mommy grab ‘n go bag?

Give A Baby GIft Filled With Love And A #SecondHug

baby gifts, mother to be, expectant mothers, moms, baby shower gift ideas

We are so excited – waiting, waiting, ugh, WAITING for our little boy baby to arrive. Yes, my greatgrandboy is on his way, at his own sweet time. “Due” 4 days ago but all is well. He’s just not in a hurry!  His mommy is a veteran at this. They have three lovely little girls. But this is the first boy and everyone is filled with anticipation awaiting his arrival.

His parents, of course, will be his first hug. The voices that he has heard for months will now have faces to go with them. And each little girl, his big sisters, will have their turn holding their new little brother. But after that, how about a #SecondHug? He needs the softest, comfiest diapers to keep him clean and dry. Huggies Little Snugglers sizes N-2 have tiny, soft pillows as a cushiony Gentle Absorb* liner that will protect his skin from the mess.

As I was thinking about a way to bless them, I considered the very active lifestyle this family leads. Like many young families, they are always on the go. So, I decided to make my granddaugter-in-law (Oh, forget the “in-law” part. She is “granddaughter” to me.) a mommy grab-n-go collection of drawstring bags filled with baby items like Huggies Little Snuggler diapers that she will need in a pinch.

I filled them with a pacifier, bib, receiving blanket, baby wipes*, little trash bags and his “Second Hug” – Huggies Little Snugglers diapers. I put four diapers in each bag – three bags in all. Of course, babies need a teddy bear and the book? Well, he will be an early reader I am sure 🙂 I am giving the whole box of diapers to them for lots of refills for those grab n go bags.

*Huggies Natural Care Wipes are a perfect choice for baby wipes. They are Huggies simplest formula ever providing a gentle clean with Triple Clean layers to handle any mess.

I bought the diapers at Sam’s Club. They have a great supply of all sizes and it is so easy to shop there. The Huggies Little Snugglers diapers were on the very same aisle as the Huggies Natural Care Wipes, right across from each other. How easy is that! Shopping at Sam’s is a breeze.

Baby gift baskets can come in lots of forms and styles. I love wicker so this white basket was perfect. It has handles, too, making it easy to move from place to place. I bought some new blue and white pillow cases to make the drawstring bags – three of them.

The top border of the pillow case was a natural channel for the ribbon, thus simplifying the sewing project. After they were made, I simply had to fill them with goodies! I put diapers, baby wipes, pacifier, bib, receiving blanket and small trash bag in each one. Of course, the basket also has a teddy bear stuffed toy and a little kid story book. What else would you put in there?

One of the many reasons that I have a Sam’s Club membership is that, in addition to regularly low prices, they often have special deals and offers to lower the prices even more.  Like right now! DEAL: Anyone purchasing two Huggies Little Snugglers Diapers and/or two Huggies Natural Care Wipes can get a $10 e-gift card to Sam’s! What a deal. (Offer ends July 31, 2016)
Enjoy!

This sweet little Teddy Bear with balloons adorns a delicious Baby Shower Cake, made in expectation of the arrival of my newborn great grandson, Ben.

Though it was made for a shower for a boy baby, it surely can be made for girl babies or, with a Happy Birthday message instead for a birthday party. The cake’s texture and flavor is reminiscent of a velvety white wedding cake. Can you say “best ever?” It is!

**This cake was made by my niece, Lauren, who is a professional pastry chef. It is not beneath her to use a box mix as an ingredient once in a while as she did in this case.  The secret to her frosting is that she used a mixer on a stand so that she could blend the frosting ingredients for long periods of time and, let me tell you, it was worth it.   It tasted amazing!

He should have seen it! Little duckies on the punch. Little teddy with balloons on the cake. Great time had by all.
My daughter made this delicious whimsical rubber ducky punch. My niece made the adorable Teddy bear cake,  totally from scratch. Both are pictured here.

Seal Envelopes Without Licking Them

Wedding announcements

Whether constructing a mailing at the office or at home, there must be a way to get those envelopes sealed. Repeated licking of a multitude of envelopes is not the best practice.

First of all, it tastes bad.  Secondly, the glue may not be safe to ingest over and over again. Licking envelopes to close and seal them is not a great idea. For efficiency sake, you may wish to purchase self-sealing envelopes but, often, that is not a possibility. Invitation envelopes tend not to be self-sealing.

Here are some creative ways to seal an envelope without licking them!

Elegant thank you cards with envelopes

Luxurious gold thank you notes with envelopes!

What kinds of bulk mailings might you be doing that require fluid to seal them? Is it bill paying day? Are you sending birthday party invites? Maybe it is an upcoming shower [baby or bridal] or wedding invitations? Graduations?

Mass mailings take place for all sorts of reasons including day to day outgoing mail for the business or volunteer job where you work. So, best practice is to seal the envelopes without licking them!

How To Seal Envelopes Without Licking Them

  • Use a simple household sponge. Dampen it with water and seal. This can have quality control problems, just as the envelope sealer may. You could release too much water and have a not-so-neat look on the back of your envelope. If you overdo it and you could even dampen the contents, as well. Note: make sure you use a new, clean sponge to avoid getting your envelope dirty.

Simple household sponge like mom used! #tips

  • Use a cotton swab or Q-tip. Dip the end of the swab in a small bit of water in a cup. Lightly swipe across the edge where the gum is. Seal. This method is what I just used in sealing invitation envelopes for the bridal shower I hosted and, later, the wedding invitations. It works very, very well! Cheapest and neatest method I’ve found.
  • Envelope Moisteners work brilliantly. These hand-held beauties have liquid glue inside, or allow you to simply put water in them. They dispense the fluid onto the glue portion of the envelop – instead of licking it – and you simply press it closed.
  • Glue Sticks – good ole “envelop glue” will do the trick. You can either use the standard school  glue sticks that you buy for your kids or you can purchase glue sticks that are designed specifically for sealing envelopes.
