Tote Bags For Busy Moms

Are you a really busy mom?  Are there days when you feel less like a mom and more like a chauffeur? Kids have full schedules and, most of the time, your are the way they get where they are going.

Depending on the time of year, many moms could literally be on the road and away from home all day long. If they forget something, there is no time to turn back and get it. It is essential to pack strategically so that they have everything they need with them and tote bags are a great tool.

My friend, Marie, did that for several years. Her son’s private school was a long distance from home. Rather than driving back and forth several times a day, she worked in the school as a volunteer for something meaningful to do while she waited for his school day to be completed.

So, this is what Marie did to be prepared>> she bought herself a book bag, just like the one her son had. She packed it like she was going on a trip! She had her lunch, snacks, water bottle, first aid supplies, books and magazines, a notepad, pens, cellphone, manicure kit, crocheting…the works.  She was prepared! That way, when her work for the school was finished,  she had things with her to occupy her time while she waited for T to come out to the car. What a brilliant plan!

Book bags are OK but I like tote bags even better. They serve the dual purpose of a purse and a tote, all in one.

Do you use a tote bag for your supplies?  What is it like?  Crafty ladies love to make their own. Here are some really great DIY’s that you can make and some “ready made” for those who would like to have their’s right away!

How To Make A Bean Bag That Will Be The Best Gift They Ever Got!

I kid you not – this bean bag could easily be the best gift you have ever given! I received a bean bag as a Christmas gift one year when I was a high school guidance counselor. Our receptionist gave it to me as a holiday gift and I still count it as one of the best gifts I have ever received!

DIY bean bags make great gifts #crafts #gifts

This bean bag is not a toy and is for use by adults. It is a heatable pillow filled with corn and it makes life so much nicer. You can place the bag in your microwave, heat it for 1 -2 minutes and use it to warm your hands, your feet or anyplace else that needs to be warmed. *Always supervise the heating of a bean bag in a microwave. Do not ever leave it unattended.

I did not have any aches or pains at the time I received mine but I was working in an environment where our office got extremely cold during the winter. The school building was circa 1939 and the chilling winter wind would whip right through the large room. I could barely type on my keyboard, it was so cold. So, I would bring that bean bag to school every day, nuke it and keep it on my lap. As my hands got too cold, I would slip them under that delightful little gift to get the feeling back in my fingers.  I never left it at school, though. It always came home with me so that I could use it as a bed warmer. I placed that heated bean bag under the covers,  right where my feet would be. They stayed toasty warm all night long!

After many years and many washings (it has a washable outer cover) the kernels inside the bag disintegrated. It was time to learn how to make one myself!

Making a bean bag proved to be easy to do. In fact, it was fun to make.  So, I  made a whole bunch of them as holiday gifts. My niece still uses hers today. My second bag lasted another 5+ years. We’d still be using it now but it disappeared. I have no idea how you lose such a valuable tool of comfort but it’s gone!

Just this week, my hubby was experiencing some very sore shoulders and asked where ours had gone. It truly had vanished. I have no clue where it went.  He really needs a couple of them so I made two and I photographed the process for you so that you can make some, too.

These “bean bags” are more precisely “corn bags” because they are filled with whole corn kernels. They are the kind of corn kernels that you use for feeding livestock and can be purchased at your local feed store or possibly a garden or pet store. You can also order them online from Amazon, which is as easy as it gets!

I bought my corn kernels at a feed store. They told me that many crafters come into the store but they often buy flax seed, because it is less moist. Wanting to stick with what I know,  I solved the moisture problem by slow-baking a big baking tray full of the corn feed on a baking sheet. I started it at 350°  and set my timer for about an hour.  Then I reduced the heat to 225° and left it for another 4 hours. It did not damage the corn* and the corn dried it out nicely. Cool the corn kernels completely before stuffing your bean bag.

Tip: keep an eye on the corn while in the oven. If you see it starting to “toast” you will want to reduce the heat right away.

How To Make A Bean Bag

The parts of your bean bag consist of an inner bag, which will be completely sown closed after it has been filled with the corn kernels, and an outer bag. The outer bag is a cover, like a slip cover, that has an opening to allow you to remove it for washing. Be sure to use durable, washable fabric. In this instance, I used a brand new white pillowcase that I cut down to make two inner bags. The outer cover is made from cotton or flannel fabric. The cover on my original bag was a pretty flannel so it was very soft.

Tools & Supplies Needed For Making A Bean Bag

1 cotton pillowcase

1 yard soft washable printed fabric (cotton or flannel)

3-4 cups whole kernel corn feed for animals

Sewing Machine

Internal bean bag filled with corn

Both sides of the bean bag and how to make one

Directions

Pre-wash the fabric and dry it to assure that there will be no shrinkage when you wash the outer cover in the future.

Cut the printed cotton or flannel fabric in a rectangle. I used an 8 1/2 X 11 inch piece of copy paper as a pattern. This will be the outer slip-cover for your bag.

Utilizing the already sewn sides and bottom of the pillowcase, cut two internal bags. They should be approximately 7 1/2 X 10 inches. All you have to do is take that copy paper and a ruler and cut 1 inch off one short end and one long end of the paper and you will have the pattern for this internal bag.

The inside bag gets totally sown on all sides. First, sew three sides and a couple of inches of the fourth. Leave a long section open so that you can turn it right side out and fill it with the prepared whole kernels of corn.

Now, sew the remaining open part so that the corn is securely inside. Next, it is time to make the pretty outer cover.

Fold over the two long sides  of the rectangle of fabric about an inch and sew them to finish them. They will become the open “envelop” part of your slip cover.

Fold the rectangle in thirds so that the finished parts overlap each other about an inch.

Pin the ends and sew them.

Turn the slip cover right side out and stuff it with the bean bag

You are done!

Using Your New Homemade Bean Bag

IMPORTANT: Every microwave is different so it is important that you test it out on yours.   It is very important to know that heating this non-food item in a microwave could be dangerous if it gets too hot and could even be a fire hazard if heated too long.  Start with 1 minute and work your way up, if desired.  Make sure the bean bag can still easily be handled in your bare hands and is not too warm.  ALWAYS stay right by the microwave while it is heating. Stop the microwave if you detect any problem. Do NOT use for young children.

*This author is not responsible for the use or misuse of this craft. Please do not allow children to operate a microwave or use a bean bag.

Enjoy!

Simple Bottle Cap Bugs Activity For Preschool Fun

Bottle cap bugs are just a silly fun way to occupy little ones’ time for a while and spark their imaginations. The bottle caps are kept loose – not fastened to a page – so that they can be manuevered and rearranged at will. This activity is strictly a fun way to experiment with making designs and patterns.  Your children can make them look like caterpillars or anything their hearts desire.

I prepared my bottle cap faces ahead of time and we used them as part of our  B is for Butterfly day at preschool.  The schedule that day had a short unplanned period of time that I wanted to fill up with something new but it wasn’t going to be long enough for an elaborate activity. The kids really had fun with this but it would not have held their attention for more than 10-15 minutes.  Lesson plan idea:  this activity can also be used for I is for Insect or C is for Caterpillar.

Tip: do not get overly attached to those bug faces, if you are working with children younger than four years old. The 3 year olds in my class couldn’t help themselves. Attennaes got broken off. It was almost like they were calling to my little kiddos “Break me!” LOL My 4 year olds did not do that. Every bug face was safe with them. As I was planning this activity, I determined not to interfere with their fun. I planned on some breakage.

How To Make A Bottle Cap Bug Face

Supplies

Bottle caps – saved from soda bottles

Glue gun or Tacky Glue

Googly Eyes

Pipe Cleaners

Cardstock

Sharpie (for the smile)

Washable marker or crayons

Make a bug face on a bottle cap for preschoolers to play with

Directions

Take a colorful soda bottle cap and glue two googly eyes to it.

Cut 1 – 2 inch pieces from pipe cleaners

Glue 2 pipecleaners to the top of the cap, above the eyes.

Add a smile made with a Sharpie permanent marker.

You will need at least one bug face bottle cap and many plain bottle caps per child to play with. I gave each child a piece of cardstock as a base that they were welcome to write or draw on with a washable marker or crayons. The example I made has little black legs for a caterpillar but they will come up with all sorts of ideas that you never thought off! Little imaginations are amazing to behold!

All little children adore imaginative play. My preschool class looks forward to dress up time every time we have it on the schedule.

Now, this is hard to find but teachers and parents absolutely love quality dress up clothes that ..

  • look great
  • are simple for the child to get into and out of ON THEIR OWN (right moms and dads?)
  • are comfortable (no scratchy seams inside) and
  • are WASHABLE!!!

Thought that wasn’t possible? These little kid costumes do exist! #affiliate  Check out the adorable dress ups at Little Adventures.  Hint: They make excellent gifts.

Besides the obvious – gingerbread – craft and decorate your houses with gum drops, colored candies such as Necco wafers (they make great shingles on a roof) and just about any candy that has a reasonably long shelf life.

Royal icing is excellent mortar to hold the walls together and it makes beautiful decorations, as well! There are many recipes for gingerbread houses. Try this one from Food Network, which also includes instructions for making royal icing – GINGERBREAD HOUSE RECIPES and INSTRUCTIONS .

We twisted the orange paper for the ring around the back of the bird and snood (the flap of skin that hangs over its beak.)
Apply a googly eye.*
*You will have to explain to your little one why it’s only one eye…or it may just be easier to let him put on two! Especially with 3 year olds, it can be very troubling to them to impair their turkey with only one eye! I love it!! I’ve learned to let them go with the artistic-flow and do it whatever way they feel good about.
