Fruit Flies are small little flies that live on fruit as adult insects, their eggs and larva. Sound way too familiar? Here is how to keep fresh fruit in your kitchen and fruit flies OUT!
Some time ago I told you about my battle with pantry moths. That was a long ordeal. This fruit fly solution is so much simpler and it works well!

We love fruit. We hate fruit flies. Since their eggs and larva are microscopic, it behooves us to wash the fruit before consumption. Even so, if you have a basket of fruit on the kitchen counter, eventually you will find some flying in the air.
Take a look at my beautiful display of washed fruit. There is an invader. See him on the orange on the left? Yep. There he is!
So, how do you get rid of them?
Trap them!
This method is easy and chemical-free.
Fruit Fly Trap
- Wash your fruit and pat it dry.
- Display the fruit on the counter.
- Get out a clean cup from the cupboard.
- Fill it about halfway with water.
- Add 2 T. vinegar.
- Cover with clear plastic wrap, tightly.
- Poke holes in the plastic in several places.*
- Place it near the fruit on the counter.
In time, you will see that the fruit flies have wiggled their way through the holes but they cannot get back out again. Eventually they die.
*I used a toothpick to poke the holes but I think the sharp end of a knife works better. You’ll have to experiment to see what works best for you. Obviously, if the holes are too big, they could find their way back out again.
