Simple Summers — 12 Great Ideas for Taking Vacations at Home

Will getting away for a summer vacation be in your plans this year?  If not, “staycations” are becoming more and more popular in place of the proverbial “Family Vacation”
Let’s investigate the possibilities of things you can do…

12 Great Ideas for Taking Vacations at Home

1. Backyard Carnival

Invite the neighborhood kids for a carnival right in your yard. Set up areas for bean bag toss, a wading pool for fishing for toys,
do face painting, serve fun snacks. Enlist the help of other parents and older siblings to get everyone involved!

2. Lemonade Stand
Set your kids up in business with an old-fashioned lemonade stand. Depending on how business goes, you may want to match the intake with some money from your own pocketbook and take the little guys to the store to spend it.

(If the money is destined for the piggy-bank, plan some kind of a celebration for a job well done. How about making homemade pizzas?)

3. Rainy Days
Summer is meant to always be sunny, isn’t it?  But sometimes it’s not.  On rainy days, get out the board games, have movies and popcorn or go outside to play in the puddles!

4. Visit a Petting Zoo

Free petting zoos are lots of fun for the kids.  If you don’t have a regular petting zoo
in your neighborhood, keep your eye out for the county fair where similar opportunities are available. Of course, you can always go to the “real” zoo, too.  Look for discount coupons to cut the cost a bit.

5. Go Fishing
Do you have a fishing hole nearby?  A creek, pond or lake will do.  Bring your sunscreen, pole-hooks-bait, and for adults, a fishing license (most states require one) and have a great time outdoors. Keep the cell phone with you for emergencies, but turn it off for a quiet, uninterrupted time with the family.

6. Put on a Play
Do you have some young thespians in  your household?
Suggest that they put on a backyard play.
Invite their friends and other siblings to take part —parents can be the audience.

7. Water Day
Similar to the carnival, plan a water day. Set up areas with a wading pool, slip ‘n slide, sprinkler, water balloons. Get ’em wet.  Have lunch on hand…all that water and fresh air works up an appetite!

8. Family Picnic
Get out the cooler, stuff it with great food and cold drinks, load up the kids and the dog and go to a park for a family picnic. Bring frisbees and other “picnic toys”, too.

9. Little League

Got any young ballplayers in the crowd?  Little league is not just for kids.
Make it a family occasion. Plan more than just going to the game.
Add on a stop at the ice cream stand on the way home.

10. Homemade Ice Cream
Speaking of ice cream, have you ever made your own in an old fashioned crank-style ice cream maker?  It is an experience that every child should have. Get the whole family involved!

11. Bike Parade
Invite the neighborhood to join in a bike parade. Get out the streamers and the camera for this colorful event. Tiny tots can ride decorated wagons with their parents pulling them along. Even pets can join in, but they  must be “decorated”, of course.

12. Camp Out
Pitch a tent in the back yard, or indoors, and let the kids have an overnight.

Set up a bonfire in the backyard and provide hotdogs and marshmallows to roast over the flame–of course you will want to make S’mores.

Need a night off from kids? Plan with another family to host an overnight at one house and another at yours.

Each set of parents gets a night to themselves.

Centerpieces – The Secret Weapon of an Organized Mom

Centerpieces are the secret-weapon of an organized mom. Really! They make a statement that says “this table is decorated and off-limits.” Try it sometime.

Clear off a table that otherwise collects clutter and place a stunning centerpiece right in the midst. It dares anyone to mess with the look. You’ll have a clutter-free table for days. Switch up the centerpiece once in a while to re-establish authority. Who knows, a clean table could become a family tradition! *More in How to Declutter Your House and Keep It Organized.

What kind of centerpieces do you like? They can be simple or ornate, depending on your tastes and decor. Here are some centerpiece ideas for you to consider:

Flowers – a fresh bouquet or arrangement of flowers in a decorative vase is a beautiful centerpiece for any dining room, kitchen table or accent table in your hallway.  Artificial plants or flowers can work well, too, just remember to dust them.

Candles – a centerpiece arrangement of candles is an elegant addition to any room. Concerned about fire? Don’t light them or, use floating candles or electric candles. Each one is lovely.

Candy – a candy dish on a smaller table can be a centerpiece. You may want to frame the look with candles on either side. Fill it with colorful M&M’s or foil wrapped candies. Stash a supply in the cupboard to replenish for your centerpiece will disappear!

Fruit – place a stunning ceramic bowl or graceful wicker basket in the center of your table and fill it with colorful fruit, fresh or artificial. Again, fake fruit needs to be shined up once in a while.

Marbles, Stones or Sea Shells – shiny marbles or colorful stones can make a great centerpiece. Arrange them on a shallow decorative plate or in a clear, glass vase.

A Simple Sea Shell Centerpiece: For a totally original seashore kind of feel, try making a simple centerpiece.  Start with a cluster of green Hydrangeas inside one hidden vase of water, all set inside a slightly larger glass vase filled with white sand and sea shells.

Fish – yes, you read it right. FISH! Using a clear glass vase with marbles at the bottom, add an underwater plant, water and a dazzling Betta Fish. Kids will love it. Take good care of that fish, though, and keep him alone or your centerpiece will become a crime scene! How to Make a Betta Fish Centerpiece

Caution: fish are living beings and should be treated with care. This centerpiece is best reserved for a short-term event such as a wedding reception or dinner party. Be nice and transfer him to larger, more fish-friendly environment soon thereafter.

Enjoy!

Chills? Warm Things Up This Winter!

Chills? Shivering cold? Drafty? If this sounds familiar, you’ve got to be uncomfortable (Did someone say “miserable?”) Wintertime can be oh-so cozy if you just make the environment right. Here are some ways that you can warm things up and feel better in the process!

Chills? Bundle Up for the Cold!

Blankets and Throws: curl up with a good book and a fluffy blanket. There are several styles that are particularly comfy. Plush fleece, high pile (I love this Jungle Theme Blanket for kids), and soft mink (not real mink but very luxurious).

Corn Bags: these nifty little bean bags are often filled with corn or some kind of grain. Microwave the bag and use it as a heating pad. If you like your feet to be warm at night, slip one in your bed and be cozy warm all night long! (Note: do not over-warm it.)

Bundle Up: when going outdoors in cold climates, dress warm and in layers. Remember your hat/hood, warm coat, insulated gloves or mittens, warm shoes or boots and a scarf.

Draft Guard: if you’re the thrifty, home improvement type, ending the drafts is on your mind! Get a “draft stopper” for your outside doors. You’ll feel the heat staying in and save on your utility bill in the process!

Heating Pads: they come in the standard flat style or for your neck & shoulders but heating pads will do the trick!

Fuzzy Slippers: when your feet are warm enough, the rest of you will feel much warmer as well. Try some fur lined slippers. So soft and your feet will be warm!

Electric Fireplaces Keep You Warm and Glowing!

Glowing Fire: if you have a fireplace in your home, put some logs on and get that thing going. Don’t have one? Do you know that the new electric fireplaces are very attractive, with flames that look as if they are a real gas fireplace, and they emit some heat? My daughter has one and it’s beautiful.

Space Heater: when used properly, an electric space heater can really take the chill out of a room. Be sure to read the directions and use them properly to avoid accidents or fire.

Hot Coffee!

Warm that Cup: ah, what a good cup of coffee or some tasty hot chocolate can do on a cold winter’s night! I learned this one at my favorite pancake-house restaurant, Perkins: pre-heat your coffee cup before pouring in the coffee. That way your beverage will not lose it’s heat.

Snuggie: along the same line as a cozy blankie, a Snuggie is a blanket that you wear!  They come in blue, pink, camel, camoflage, leopard, zebra and others. You can also get Snuggies for Kids including Princess, Youth NFL and Spiderman Snuggies! (Check out the video below for Snuggies for DOGS!)

Take a Hot Shower: take a long, luxurious bath or shower in very warm water and, after drying off, put on some comfy pj’s or sweats to keep the heat in!

Cuddle with Someone You Love: this may be the best idea of all. When you get out that fuzzy blanket and set a roaring fire in the fireplace, cuddle up with your honey.  No honey? Let the dog up on the couch. She’ll cuddle with you! 🙂

And, yes, there are SNUGGIES FOR DOGS!  Yup! Catch a glimpse in this video! (Reading this in an email? Just click on the title to go to the blogpost to see the video.)

Simple Lovely Living

Instead of “Simple Lovely Living” perhaps this post should be called “Living Like Martha”.  There is something so casual and warm about Martha Stewart that living like her, in some small way, seems possible.  It does not require a lot of money.  It does require a love for life and for pretty surroundings.

Check out her Martha Stewart Living website and enjoy the beautiful photo montage of what Martha loves to have in her life…like the flowers in this perfectly decorated dining room.  OK…so much of it probably did cost a pretty penny but she didn’t start out that way.

In fact, since we are dedicating Mondays to the inspiring Martha Stewart, I decided it was time for me to read her biography.  Being Martha was written by her friend, Lloyd Allen, who has known her for over 30 years. When the media began to rip her apart and basically “have her for lunch” during the unfortunate period of her life, it grieved him to think that the wonderful attributes of this woman were being overlooked…trashed and forgotten.  So, he set himself to tell the whole story about Martha Stewart.  I’ve only just started reading it but, so far, I love this book!

Did you know that she started out as a fashion model, then stock broker, and in a heartfelt desire to be at home and do what she was created to do–homemaking–she quit her day job. As a SAHM, she started a catering business from her house and hired other moms who also wanted to stay at home, but needed an income to support their families, to help.  They would cook at home and bring the dishes to her for the catering events! Is that wonderful, or what!

Her charm and unending talent carried her into the spotlight as she shared her passion for simple, lovely living.  And she makes it so easy for us to learn how to do it for ourselves.

As I said, I have just started reading this fascinating book but can already say that I can recommend it to anyone who is curious to know more about Martha or who gets strength from true stories of real people who started humbly small and became a brilliant success!

Enjoy Martha Monday this week and, now, go pick some fresh flowers to put on your table!
