Beautify Your Yard With A Dazzling Display Of Fragrant Lilacs

ROC, lilacs, Rochester, spring, Mother's Day, family fun

Do you love lilacs as much as I do? Which color is your favorite? Just as I have settled on one, another catches my eye. The rich royal purple, I guess.
They all are gorgeous, it is too hard to decide.

Perhaps you live in a climate where lilacs cannot grow. Let me tell you about them. Lilacs were my mother’s delight. She planted bushes throughout our yard as a plush colorful natural fence! We had deep purples, burgundy purples, lighter violets and whites. What a pretty sight! As a little accent, she added a couple of yellow forsythia bushes and “gave me” my very own flowering pink magnolia tree. I’ve got to tell you that the months of May and June were a floral wonderland at my house!

Now, just so you know, they do attract bees. Bees LOVE flowers. So, for those who are not fond of bees, you may want to plant your lilac bushes at the extremity of your yard — but the beauty far outweighs that little drawback. And, there is another bonus you will LOVE about lilacs – butterflies ADORE lilacs! Expect to see a lot of them while they are in bloom!
Lilacs are shrubs. They can grow quite large, so you will want to be mindful of that when planting them. The Farmer’s Almanac has excellent instructions about just how to plant and care for them. You can check it out here: All About Lilacs

And even information is available more from Martha Stewart:  “Lilacs”

Rochester, New York is known as the lilac-loving capital in the US. Dubbed “The Flower City” Rochester hosts The Annual Lilac Festival at Highland Park for two weeks every May. The free event boasts a display of over 1200 lilac bushes to view! Walk the trails throughout the park and take-in the flowering panorama. Enjoy great live entertainment, fun and games for the children and lots of great food from the local vendors who all turn out for this great family time.  You may even get to see the mounted police while you are there.

Vacationing in Rochester, New York? “Does anyone vacation in Rochester, New York” you say? It may not sound exciting but do consider it. As is the homeplace of the Strong National Museum of Play and the host of the Lilac Festival there are just two great reasons to go there. Want more? Come over to Traveling Family Blog and read my post  Things To Do When Visiting Rochester New York. It will open your eyes!

Enjoy!

Happy Weight Loss Wednesday!
Health & Fitness Expert
Liz Bonis
You know, I just love Liz Bonis!  If you haven’t heard of her, you must get acquainted.  She is the vivacious radio/tv personality of Lighten Up With Liz…and a home grown product of Rochester NY.  A little known fact about Liz: she is a graduate of the school that I work in!  Faith Temple School (now known as Destiny Christian School and Preschool).  She is one of our claims to fame!
Liz is not only a health & lifestyle reporter but she is a registered dietitian, a certified nutritionist, a certified personal trainer, and a diabetes educator. And she had time to get her Masters degree in Communications, as well.
With boundless energy and a great sense of humor…Liz has the rare gift of bringing joy and laughter to what can be a very touchy subject:  WEIGHT!
So many of us look forward to the interesting anecdotes and funny “asides” from Liz as she has her brief radio conversation every day at 8:15 am with Beth & Chet. We drive to work with her. She fills her show up laughter, the latest in medical studies and really interesting tidbits that you’d “only hear here”!  She researches for us, reads for us, translates medical jargon into just plain English!  We love Liz!
Liz is seen regularly on TV Channel 12 in Cincinnati .
She also appears on 13WHAM in Rochester NY and has a very popular
daily talk show on WHAM 1180 AM radio in Rochester NY.
Here is a nugget, straight from Liz’s website Lighten Up With Liz, that may help you figure out what’s going on if weight loss isn’t coming easily:
The “Dynamic Duo” for Weight Loss
International Journal of Obesity
June 10, 2011
“When it comes to losing weight, we’ve all heard the mantra “eat less, exercise more” right?  But a new report says ther are two other elements critical to successfully losing weight and keeping it off.
In a dual-phase randomized trial of 472 obese people, researchers found that managing stress and treating depression made a big difference to long-term weight loss.
This makes sense if you tend to overeat when you’re stressed out, but even’t if you don’t, if you are finding it a struggle to manage your weight you might want to have your stress and depression levels checked out.  If you can’t remove what’s stressing you, employ a coping mechanism such as exercise.  It may also help ease depression; about one-third of people who exercise on a regular basis find that their mood improves with exercise.”
What’s a coping mechanism for you?  I must confess that mine is usually chocolate! No surprise, huh!  Think I should Liz’s exercise suggestion and see how it goes?  Leslie Sansone DVD, where did I leave you?
