Rolled Cookies – Cute Little Snowman Cookies

Simple to make – fun to bake – yummy to eat! Rolled sugar cookies are perfect anytime at all but especially for the holidays! I have made them in all sorts of shapes but these snowman cookies are my favorite. They are so easy – you don’t have to be a baking genius to make them. Get the kids involved, dig in and have fun!

Rolled Snowman Sugar Cookies

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt

Tub of vanilla frosting
Tub of dark chocolate frosting
Milk Chocolate M&M’s®s
Decorator frosting in little tubes

Preparing the Dough

Cream softened butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl.
Add eggs and vanilla, mixing on medium speed.
Add baking powder, salt and flour (add flour one cup at a time) and blend.
Separate into two sections of dough.
Wrap in plastic wrap.
Refrigerate 1 hour up to 24 hours.


Baking Directions

Preheat oven 400°
Lightly flour a clean counter.
Roll one section of dough, using a rolling pin, to about 1/2 inch thick.
Cut out with cookie cutters
Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 6-8 minutes till very lightly brown on the edges.
Cool completely.
Frost and decorate.

Vanilla frosting: body and face
Dark chocolate frosting: top hat
Mini-chocolate chips: eyes
MARS Milk Chocolate M&M’s®s: buttons and nose
Decorator frosting tubes: pink (mouth), red (band on hat), green (scarf)

Glittery Play Dough for Wintertime Fun

Little children love snowman crafts! They also love play dough. For a winter craft, each of my preschoolers made their own snowman out of homemade play dough and did they have fun! What amazed me is that there were no two alike. Each one was totally unique, as unique as each of my little students are.

This was my first experience with making play dough. It is easy to make and cheap, too, except for the cream of tartar. You will need some elbow-grease for stirring it. Be prepared. If you have shoulder trouble, enlist the help of a friend for that part.  Otherwise, dig in and enjoy!  Your kids will LOVE it. 

Glitter Play Dough 
Ingredients
4 cups flour
4 cups water
1 cup salt
1/4 cup cooking oil
1/2 cup cream of tartar
food coloring (optional)
glitter

Put all of the ingredients in a large saucepan. 
Reserve the food coloring and glitter for later.
Cook it on medium heat until the mixture becomes thick and sticky. 
Stir and don’t stop stirring till it’s done!
Remove from heat and continue to mix a little more.
Add glitter. 
If you want color, add food coloring, too. 
Since we were making snowmen, I didn’t use any.
Soon as it is cool, play with it or I separate it into plastic bags.*
  
*In this particular instance, I was making play dough to bring to school for my preschoolers. One bag per child. If we had been making the play dough with the children, I would have let them add the coloring and glitter themselves. It’s fun!
Finishing Touches: Snowman “Clothes”
ARMS: twigs or pretzel sticks
BUTTONS: colored candies or craft buttons
HAT & NOSE: craft foam sheets or construction paper
SCARF: fabric 
BASE: laminated winterscape for a tray

Tip: Make a base. I wanted the snowmen to look extra special for my little guys so I laminated a winter-scape for each of them to use as a tray. Looks cute and the play dough won’t stick to the laminated surface.
Tip: Buttons. I really love M&M’s. We did an M&M math project weeks ago and I saved the leftovers for later. Using them for buttons seemed like a great idea. The blue M&M’s looked very cute but the color soon melted on my snowman. (They may “melt in your mouth, not in your hand” however they do melt on play dough snowmen. LOL)  Next time, I will use craft buttons.
