A Really Fun Way For Kids To Learn

Food art is a fun way to enhance your lessons in school #teaching

Yes, food art is a really fun way for kids to learn. Just add food art projects to your lesson plans to add interest and variety. Our history students have been studying about the Wright Brothers, pioneers of aviation, and the times in which they lived. The children were facinated as they learned about the vision that Orville and Wilbur Wright had that man, someday, would fly.

As a fun way to reinforce the lesson, we added some food art projects for the kids to do. They made the  airplane depicted here from Smartees candy, Lifesavers and a stick of gum. And what does a set of teeth have to do with it? Well, we learned that one of the brothers, Wilbur,  had his teeth knocked out while playing hockey. That is a fun fact they won’t soon forget!

How To Make An Airplane Using Food

Supplies

Roll of candies like Smarties – body of the airplane

2 pieces of Lifesavers candies [large] – wheels of the plane

Stick of chewing gum in its wrapper – wings of the plane

Rubber band – holds it all together

Directions

Run a rubberband through 2 lifesaver candies.

Lay your roll of Smarties candies across the rubber band and pull the loops on each end of the rubber band [at the same time] outward, up and over the ends of the gum. You now have a food art candy airplane!

How To Make A Set Of Teeth Food Art

Supplies

Fresh apple, cut into wedges

Mini marshmallows

Peanut butter*

Butter knife

TIP:  *Sunbutter also works very well and is a good selection for a nut-free environment.

Food art set of teeth #fun

Directions

Cut wedges out of an apple, 2 per set of teeth

Turn one wedge on its side and generously coat with peanut butter or, if you have someone present who is allergic to nuts, sun butter.

Stand mini marshmallows up in the peanut or sun butter to form a row of teeth.

Coat a second wedge of apple with some peanut or sun butter and lay it on top of the mini marshmallow row. There you’ve got it, food art teeth!

Apple Carving Creativity

One of our students, Miss E, decided to carve her initial into her apple. She then stuffed it with mini-marshmallows for a 3-D look!

Learn How To Make Your Own Rainbow Bagels

Got any bagel lovers in your house? Our kids grew up on bagels but I never thought of making my own. These rainbow bagels are fun and taste like they came right from the local bagel shop and you can make them yourself!
how to make rainbow bagels
My niece, Lauren, is an amazing, culinary-schooled pastry chef. Baking is her passion. She is just hours away from giving birth to her fourth child. So, what does she do? Make rainbow bagels, of course!  A sure sign that baby is just hours away, LOL! She’s already totally cleaned her house.

When I saw these bagels I just had to share them with you. Kids love them and adults do, too. They taste like the best bagels you get from a pro bagel shop yet she made them right at home! You can, too. The basic recipe she used is from Epicurious (recipe below.)
The rainbow part? Well, she quadrupled the recipe. Then she separated it into four parts, coloring each a different color. Then, she just rolled the dough into cords and wrapped them around each other. She shared with me that she kneaded the dough with her Kitchenaid mixer but, in her opinion, it would be relatively simple to knead by hand.
