8 Genius Cleaning Hacks Busy Parents Love

Whether you’re dealing with the latest toddler tantrum, ferrying your kids to various clubs or running the school gauntlet, being a parent and keeping the house tidy may seem impossible –especially when children seem to make messes faster than they can be cleaned up!

The good news is there are plenty of ways to speed up household chores. Try the tips below next time you’re in a hurry to clean up – you’ll be surprised at how much time they can save.

genius cleaning hacks for busy parents

1. Get Rid of Hair with a Rubber Glove

Stray pet hairs can make any sofa look old and dirty. Hair can be difficult to remove though – especially if your vacuum cleaner doesn’t come with a self cleaning brush roll.

A cheap alternative is to use the static electricity provided by rubber gloves. Simply wear the gloves and run your hand over the sofa. Hair will stick to your hand with very little effort. When your gloves are “full,” submerge them in a bowl of water and the hair will float to the top.

2. Remove Juice Stains with White Vinegar

Juice is often spilt at lunch time – and it can be surprisingly difficult to remove from clothes.

There’s a trick for getting rid of most juice stains though – and it relies on the amazing properties of white vinegar. Start by rinsing in cold water, then soak in a mixture of ½ teaspoon of laundry detergent, a tablespoon of white vinegar and a liter of water. After soaking for around 15 minutes, run the clothing through the washing machine to get rid of whatever is left.

3. Protect Your Fridge with Plastic Wraps

Fridges can get dirty quickly – especially if your children often spill food or drinks when putting them back (like mine!)

An easy way to cut down on cleaning is to line each shelf with clinging food wraps. Once they get dirty, you can replace them without needing to clean.

4. Lint Rollers are Great for Dusting

Lampshades, windowsills and fireplaces are magnets for dust. Some vacuums come with dusting brushes, but these can be awkward to use if you’re in a rush.

A faster alternative is a lint roller. Run a roller over lampshades or other dusty items to remove dust without needing a vacuum. The sticky surface will also remove lumps of fluff and other debris without damaging delicate items.

On a side note, I always keep a fresh supply of lint rollers around the house. They can be a lifesaver when you realize your work clothes are covered in dog hair or fluff.

5. Clean Finger Marks from Stainless Steel Appliances

Stainless steel appliances look great – but fingerprints can be almost impossible to prevent.

A quick way to make stainless steel shine again is to use some rubbing alcohol with a microfiber cloth. Make sure you rub with the grain of the surface and pay extra attention to the handles.

6. Find Earrings or Other Small Objects with a Vacuum and a Pair of Tights

If you’ve lost an earring, finding it amongst the daily clutter of a family home can be a nightmare. Fortunately, there’s an easier solution than crawling on your hands and knees.

Start by cutting a leg off a pair of old tights, then fix the fabric over the end of your vacuum cleaner’s hose. You can use a rubber band to secure it.

Switch on the vacuum and direct it under sofas, down crevices and anywhere else your earring may have fallen. Air can pass through the tights, so your vacuum’s suction won’t be affected, but earrings (or other larger items) get caught in the fabric.

7. Freshen Dirty Trainers with Baking Soda

If your little one’s training pants are starting to smell, an easy way to neutralize the odor is with baking soda.

Just sprinkle the baking soda over the shoes, including inside, then leave it to sit for a few hours. The baking soda should absorb the worst odors and is easy to brush off.

8. Save Time by Maintaining Your Vacuum Cleaner

Abraham Lincoln once said, “if I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I would spend six of those hours sharpening my axe.”

A similar ethos can be applied to vacuum cleaners, as a clogged vac will struggle to remove dust, dirt and hair. So, if cleaning your floors seems to be taking longer than usual, some vacuum maintenance could do the trick.

Start by cleaning your vacuum cleaner’s filters. When these become clogged, air flow is reduced and the vacuum becomes less effective. If the filter you’re using can be washed in water, make sure it’s completely dry before you use it again. The filters of small vacuums or handheld models (such as this) often need to be cleaned more regularly, as they clog faster.

Next, check your vacuum’s beater bar for hair or string. When hair is wound around the bar, it may not spin as quickly. It’s also a good idea to empty your vacuum’s canister each time you use it, as a full dust bin can reduce suction power.

Summary

Being a parent and taking care of housework isn’t easy, but it doesn’t need to be stressful either. By adding these cleaning hacks to your arsenal, you’ll be able to keep your house cleaner in less time – even if your children excel at making mess!

How To Clean Crayon Off Almost Everything

Crayon marks can show up in the strangest places. It just takes a crayon, a toddler and turning your back for one moment!

It all started with a cute book that my preschoolers were making for our upcoming Open House. We studied “M is for Me” and the book was appropriately named “All About Me.” The students colored self-portraits upon which I would glue their own photo. Adorable!

My back was turned for just a moment. When I turned around, it was too late. I turned to see an enthusiastic colorer… very enthusiastic…coloring right off her paper and onto the table. A table that we did not own! We rent space in a church for our classrooms. Borrowed tables should not be returned with crayon all over them, that is for sure!

Soon as my little ones were safely on their way home, I returned to the “scene of the crime.” First, I used a scrubby with our own DIY cleanser. Nothing. The artwork remained. Then I tried hand sanitizer–I was desperate. Still, nothing. So I pulled out the Expo white board cleaner, a precious commodity to be used sparingly. I saturated the tabletop with Expo and to my glee, it worked! The fumes were a bit strong but, thankfully, there was plenty of time for that to clear before anyone would be near the table again. I made a mental note: never use that much in a closed room with children.

How To Clean Crayon Off of Things

Shaving Cream: remembering what my teacher-friends said years before, classic, white foamy shaving cream is the cleanser of choice. Marked up desktops have been successfully cleaned for years by using shaving cream and a scrubby sponge. It works on all sorts of markings — ink, pencil, crayons. It leaves a nice shine, as well. Had there been some on hand, that is what I would have used.

Interestingly, teachers say that the CHEAPER the brand of shaving cream, the better it seems to work. So, why not include it in your lesson plan! Cover the desk with shaving cream and let your kids have fun. Write in it. Draw in it. Then, when it’s time to move to the next activity, wipe the shaving cream off the desk using a sponge or scrubby. Follow up with Windex and a towel. The desks will be cleaner than clean. Better than new! Even glue and tape comes off.

But what about getting crayon off other surfaces?

Fabric: dip a cloth in white vinegar and rub the crayoned area lightly before washing.

Walls: use baking soda and water made into a paste and lightly scrub.  Other remedies include rubbing mayonnaise on the stained area, spraying on WD40, applying non-gel toothpaste using a toothbrush, and the old “eraser on a pencil trick” (simply erase the marks!)

Glass: if the crayon is on glass there are several well-thought-of methods. You can use dishwashing liquid, stronger cleansers like Greased Lightning , Goo Gone or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

How about you? Do you have any home-remedies for stray crayon that got away from a young artiste?

.

Enjoy!

What the Color of Your Home Says About You

Most people decorate their home using colors that they like. They don’t really give much thought into why they like them or what particular meaning they might have – it’s just usually based on a gut instinct. Yet, in actual fact, color experts argue that the shades and tones you use in your home can actually reveal a lot about your personality. Read on to find out more.

Gain an insight
Have a walk around your home. Can you notice any themes or similarities in color choices in each room? Even if you decorate rooms in different colors you may still notice a dominance of a certain color or shade trying to outdo all of the other colors. So, what does this say about you?

Red
Red is a very bold and daring choice to opt for in the home, and it often reflects in an extrovert or lively personality. Advocates of red colors enjoy socializing and are often very passionate, but may have a quick, fiery temperament. If you want to add red to your home, then be selective of which room to use it in, as it’s a strong color.

Blue
There are lots of different shades of blue, from soft light blue to navy tones. If you prefer darker blues then you’re likely to be a dynamic person, who is a leader rather than a follower. Lighter tones of blue suggest a gentler nature. Blue is also a very calming color, so it highlights someone who doesn’t like conflict and prefers peace to chaos. It can also symbolize someone who is loyal, trusting, clever and confident. Blue is said to suppress the appetite, so if you have a blue kitchen, you may find that you never feel hungry at home!

Yellow
This sunshine color suggests you are likely to be a warm, caring person who enjoys life and has a pleasant, cheerful nature. You’re likely to have lots of energy and an independent streak. Fans of yellow will probably know their own minds and set their own goals, which others will admire. However, if you overuse yellow at home it can have the opposite effect, and may suggest a very anxious or insecure personality.

Green

This earthy, nature-inspired tone in the home can suggest a person is stable, emotionally secure and peace-loving. If you prefer bright greens, then you’re positive and optimistic. A home that makes use of lots of light green denotes someone who is a good listener and compassionate. However, if your choice of green shade is more of the darker type then beware – you could be labelled as greedy with jealous tendencies!

Orange
Orange hues in a home suggest its owner is happy, bubbly and creative. You are probably enthusiastic and determined with everything you do, and easily reap success. Orange is said to be a color that stimulates the appetite, so if you have an orange kitchen or dining room, blame your color choice if you tend to over-indulge now and again!

Black
Black is a very harsh, masculine color to have in the home and can signify power and strength. But, it can also be associated with someone who is a bit of an enigma. You probably relish formality and order in your life.
