Native American Tee Pee Craft; preschool crafts; H is for House lesson

Our preschool class made this craft on “H is for House” day.  As it was also our last time to meet before Thanksgiving, we killed “two birds with one stone”, so to speak, and made a Native American House (Tee Pee.) No birds were harmed in this project. LOL

When you do this craft, you will want to consider the age of the children making it and how many are involved. As a classroom preschool activity, there should be at least one adult helper for every 3 children for them to be involved in the whole process. If you don’t have that, I suggest preparing the top of the tee pees in advance. That is what I did.

Older children can do so much more for themselves;  they will enjoy doing the tops.

Tee Pee Craft

Supplies

Waffle cones
Thanksgiving display mat (optional -free printable below)

1. Clip the bottoms and tops of the waffle cones.

  • Tops: use scissors
  • Bottoms: pinch off bottoms with your fingers. Keep trying to stand it up. If it topples over, pinch a tiny bit more off till it does stand. The cone is so brittle, using scissors will take too much off the bottom. Pinching works best!

2. Pre-test the size of the opening at the top of the cone. If two pretzel sticks do not fit at the same time, gently increase the size of the hole.
3. Melt the chocolates.
4. Dip the top of the cones in chocolate. Insert two pretzel sticks about 1-2″ long. Press them against the chocolate so that they stick. Lay them on their side to harden.
5. Take the cones, after the tops have solidified, and dip the bottoms in the bowl of melted chocolate and then in a bowl of either colored sunflower seeds (pictured here) or sprinkles.
6. Lay them on waxed or parchment paper until dry.
7. Place a tee-pee on our display mat at the end of the stone walkway and you have a nice little scene!

E is for Elephant Preschool Craft

This craft is part of my preschool lesson “E is for Elephant.” I surfed the internet and found a wonderful coloring page on Lines Across. It was color by numbers. I loved it but my preschoolers are only just learning to recognize numbers. It would have been frustrating rather than fun. So, I opted to use the page without numbers.

A good friend of mine is a Kindergarten teacher. She shared that many preschoolers enter her class unable to use scissors. It takes weeks for her to catch them up to where they should be. Though my class only meets once a week (I teach homeschoolers),  I made up my mind that they would leave with that skill under their belt.

So, nearly every time we are together we use SCISSORS! That is why I decided to cultivate paper cutting and gluing skills in this craft, instead of coloring it.
Elmer the Elephant

Well, to my surprise, E is for Elephant became an extra special day. Several of my students were absent, sorry to say. But the smallness of the group changed the dynamic dramatically.

When we sat down to do this craft, this is what transpired: sweet chatter. With only 5 children present, all little girls, it was such a cozy group. My assistant, Katie, and I decided to join them in making this craft. After everyone got the hang of it, some adorable conversations took place. They shared about what they like, what they do, where they go, fun things that happened. Then Lili started singing a song “Yes, Jesus Loves Me” while she worked. She sang by herself for a few seconds and then we all joined in.  It was a very special time.

You will need:
Elmer coloring page template (link above)
  • Holding large sheets of paper is difficult for little hands so I pre-cut the construction paper into more manageable strips.
  • They, in turn, cut them into smaller pieces.
  • Next, I had the children glue-stick the colors onto the various squares on Elmer’s body.
It turned out so cute and every elephant was so different.  That same day, we read an Elmer the Elephant book. Priceless!
