Building toys for girls and boys #ad #buildingtoys

My nephew, Elijah, is a kindergartner who loves to build things. Much of the summer his family had workmen at their house installing new windows, siding and a roof. He thrived on watching them every day as they hammered, sawed and built.

One morning he met the men at the door wearing his pretend tool-belt, stocked with pretend  tools, and announced “I’m going to be a builder just like you!” He was ready.  Do you have little ones in your life just itching to build something? There are so many awesome toys and costumes to help your little tykes have glorious fun being builders, too.

Go-Anywhere Building Scene Sandbox:  Big Builder My Little Sandbox from Be Good Company is such a cool little toy. Your kiddos can have the fun of playing builder in a sandbox right indoors! It is the perfect size to put on a play table or on the floor. You don’t need to be a little kid  to enjoy it – this toy looks fun for everyone! [They also have a My Little Sandbox Horse Ranch and a My Little Sandbox Doggie Day Camp for pet lovers!]

Preschool Teaching Fail! So Now What Do You Do?

October 5, 2017 Leave a Comment

My preschool teaching fail and what I did to make it all better! #kids

Let me say from the get-go that I love this preschool class. I have never had a classroom of little kiddos that I didn’t love, this group included. But where, oh where, did this bunch come from, Planet X? LOL!

The first day of school started out a little rough. We had two students suffering from great separation anxiety and it took quite a while to help them through it. While they were crying and being cuddled by either myself or one of my assistants, the rest of the class started with a fun activity at their seats. As things finally quieted down a bit, we were able to move on to eating our snack.

Note: this post contains affiliate links.

Then, after our morning snack, we went as a group to the potty and came back for circle time. I started with a story about Elmo’s first day of school followed by a fun getting to know you bean-bag game. What a relief. Even our two little scared kiddos were smiling.

Finally,  it was time for me to introduce the classroom rules and routines. When it came to introducing our classroom jobs, I was astounded. First, one little boy blurted out “I don’t want a job!” Another child added “Me neither!” Within moments half the class flat out refused to take jobs. Really!

Now, our jobs are fun jobs. I have never had a student not want one. “Line Leader” – the first person in line all day long – is usually the favorite, followed by “Door Holder.” The Door Holder is the person who gets to hold the door open for the line.

Our others jobs include: Prayer Leader, Song Leader, Flag Holder, Pledge Leader, Calendar Helper and Weather Reporter. All of the other students get to be Teachers’ Helpers for the day. I created colorful flags with the job titles on which to place their name tag as they were awarded their job. For the first time ever, the flags were of no interest to them.  A successful classroom routine for three consecutive years was REJECTED in one fell swoop!

I chalked it up to newness and did my best to get the remaining children to take a job, making the process look as fun as possible. “Next week will be better!” I surmised. Was it better? Not much. I still struggled to get them through the whole ordeal. What was I going to do?

The third week, my reluctant participants were obviously not catching onto the joys of employment. My assistant suggested we come up with something new. She was right. This was obviously not going to work. Then it hit me. The process of handing out jobs was just too long for them. I do not know why it worked so very well for the three years prior but it was not going to work with this group.

Jobs as part of rituals and routines in a preschool classroom

So, I took the 8 key positions and laminated two signs with four jobs on each with a bright yellow arrow pointing from each job to the right.  I taped the signs to my black board in the classroom to write the child’s name next to the job they picked.

The #preschool class that refused to take on jobs => and what their teacher came up with! #kids #fun #homeschooling Click To Tweet

At the start of circle time, I asked for volunteers, holding off Line Leader and Door Holder for the last. The first job I offered up was Prayer Leader. Yes! I got a candidate. I had her come up and help me lead the group in our opening prayer. On to Song Leader. Another couple of hands went up. The Song Leader of the day then joined me immediately at the front of the room to lead us in our classroom songs. On and on it went. Assign a job, do a job. Assign a job, do a job. They were seeing the cause and effect. That was it! They needed to see the instant rewards.

Circle time in #preschool #tips

I do believe that this routine is going to work all year long.  Now that I know the system that works for them, I will add in assigning Teachers Helpers. I won’t do it, though, until I have a project going where I NEED helpers. Doing it that way, they will see right away what helpers get to do!

One sweet little side story: one of my parents emailed to ask me if we had played Ring Around The Rosey that day. We had not. We had actually played it the week before. Well, she said that she and her husband were checking on their kids after they had gone to bed. They heard him softly singing in his sleep “Ashes, ashes we all fall down!”  How cute is that!

So, teachers, have you ever run into a situation where your best efforts weren’t working? What did you do?

Enjoy!

Nut allergies are so prevalent that, in my opinion, it is better to select non-nut and non-tree-nut foods for public settings rather than taking a chance of sending someone into an allergic reaction. Here are 34 great, healthy ideas to help you decide what to pack for a nut free lunch!

If you are looking for a quick, delicious nut-free snack for your child to take to school, take a look at this => ☑️Don’t Go Nuts Bars This power bar is recommended by over 200 real customers with 4.5 stars on Amazon!

List of Nut Free Snacks

  1. apple slices
  2. applesauce

Over the years I have witnessed two severe food-based allergic reactions and I would never want to be responsible for triggering it for anyone. In each case, without aid the person could have suffocated as their throats swelled up. It happened so quickly and in each case they did NOT ingest nuts. They were just in the vicinity of them. It is scary.

Have a Fun Kids Parade This Summer!

July 6, 2017 Leave a Comment

The 4th of July brought back a lot of memories from my childhood this year. When we were kids, we had so much fun. There was a neighborhood parade. We planned for weeks ahead. After that? Swimming with friends in the pool, a cookout with bonnfire and then going to the fireworks. It was always such a great day!
famly fun, 4th of the July
Not long ago I was going through some of the family photos and came across this newspaper clipping.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

parades, kids activities, summer, familyfun

It holds one of those sweet family memories. July 3rd 1958 was a big deal for my brother and me, though we had no idea at all at the time.  You see, our mom was one creative lady. She made George and Martha Washington outfits for us to wear in the kids’ parade.

Our neighborhood had a strong group of families who organized events for their children year round. We had picnics and other get-togethers. It was an annual tradition to have the 4th of July children’s parade. Everyone participated.
July 4th
Kids decorated their bikes by weaving crepe paper streamers through the spokes of the wheels and attaching cards* with clothespins to them so that they’d make a clicking sound as the bikes moved. *Some used baseball trading cards others used celebrity cards like the Beatles or Paul Revere and the Raiders – I try not to think about how valuable they could be today if we hadn’t done that. Who knew? They came in packs of gum and it was fun!

family fun
Now, this is funny: Mom put together these Colonial costumes. I was 5 years old and Seth was 3. She used nylon stockings as a base for the white wigs and glued (yes GLUE!) cotton to them while they were on our heads. And then the hats went over them.  Getting them offback  our heads later on was a trip! Ouch! Plus, I had a hoop under my skirt. You can’t sit down in a hoop skirt. So, I had to stand with a wig glued to my hair and I couldn’t sit down.
Seth was even less comfortable. It was a very hot July. You could hear the grass growing, it was so hot. A neighbor had called the newspaper because she thought what mom did was so creative that someone ought to know. They must have agreed because a photographer and reporter showed up.
Little three year old Seth was beside himself with displeasure. He wanted that costume OFF NOW!. So, to get him to be still for a few more minutes, mom grabbed a popcycle from the freezer. They thought it was so cute that they took photos of him licking it and told me to stick out my tongue like I wanted some. The caption “Real Cool George” was born.
Independence Day, USA holidays, family celebrations, summertime, parades
The newspaper headline along with this photo was in both the morning and evening papers. It got syndicated and showed up in various papers throughout the nation including Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. My grandparents lived in Pennsylvania and when they opened up their morning paper and saw us there, well, it caused quite a stir.
So, it doesn’t have to be the 4th of July to have a parade does it? Just do it!
Putting together a kids’ parade is fun. Let the children do a lot of the work. Kids come up with great ideas.
kids activities, 4th of July
Some of the things they can do:
Decorate bikes to ride in the parade
Make toy wagons into floats
Carry American flags
Dress in costumes
Dress up the dog and walk him in the parade
Push a baby doll or stuffed animal in a toy stroller
Play an instrument
March to the sound of a toy drum
March with pom poms
Walk blowing bubbles – check out this bubble-blowing toy saxophone!
Face paint the participants before it starts
Give prizes*
Definitely, have refreshments for everyone at the end of the parade.

*If you do give out prizes, I urge you to keep prize-giving light hearted and low-key. This is family fun time, not a sporting event. Participating in a parade is the prize!

Here is something fun to do this summer - have a kids parade! #4thofJuly #kids #familyfun Click To Tweet

Have your kids ever had a parade? What fun things did they do?

Homemade Play Dough Is Now Easier Than Ever

October 5, 2015 Leave a Comment

DIY play dough, play dough recipe, play doh
Making playdough is better than ever using the microwave. It is faster and easier, too.
I love making play dough. There is something fun about developing this colorful toy by yourself,  knowing that a child  you love will have hours of play ahead of him.

Play dough tools for kids #Ad
The classic playdough recipe, cooked on the stove, works great but it takes a lot of elbow-grease stirring and stirring. So, when I came across a recipe for MICROWAVE play dough, I had to give it a try.
Oh my goodness, is this so easy and the play dough turns out just as pliable and deeply colorful as ever. I won’t be making the old recipe again!

How To Make Play Dough In The Microwave

preschool, DIY play dough, play doh

Ingredients

1 cup water
1 generous T cooking oil
10-20 drops food coloring
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/3 cup salt
1 cup bleached flour*
*Bleached flour is whiter and gives you a truer color.

Directions

Use a microwave-safe mixing bowl. This process takes about 5 minutes including prep.
Combine water, oil, food coloring and stir.
Add cream of tartar, and stir again.
Add salt, stir.
Gradually add flour and stir as you go along to prevent lumps.
Microwave on high for 30 seconds.
Stir.
Another 30 seconds.
Stir.
A third time, 30 seconds.
Stir.
A fourth time, 30 seconds.
Stir.
It will now be in a ball.
Let sit for 2 minutes.
Remove from bowl and put the play dough ball on a dinner plate to cool.*
Wrap cooled play dough in plastic wrap and store at room temperature.
*I spray the plate with cooking spray to make it easily removable from the plate.

Dr. Benjamin Carson – Great Role Model For Our Kids

May 4, 2015 Leave a Comment

Dr. Ben Carson; Dr. Benjamin Carson: Gifted Hands movie w Cuba Gooding Jr, Gifted Hands book, neurosurgery on babies

Years ago I read the biography of a most amazing man and his equally amazing mother. The book is called “Gifted Hands.“

The man: Dr. Benjamin Carson. He was the foremost pediatric neurosurgeon in America…maybe even the world! The first ever to successfully surgically separate twins born conjoined at the head, truly he has “gifted hands.”

Ben Carson’s story actually starts out with his mom. Unable to read herself, she was doggedly determined that her children would. What a lady! Seeing miserable grades coming home, and their lack of excitement about learning, she strategically challenged her boys to read, read, read.
“My favorite subject was recess. Fortunately for me, I had a mother who believed I was smart.” Ben Carson Click to Tweet

Mrs. Carson, eventually, joined the ranks of the educated herself. But, her priority at first was her boys. Living as a single mom in the ghetto of Detroit, she took on two to three cleaning jobs at a time to support them. Her determination to see them succeed resulted in a love of learning in both of them. End result? One became a remarkable doctor, the other an accomplished business executive. Not bad, huh!

“There is no such thing as an average human being.
If you have a normal brain, you are superior.”   Ben Carson Click to Tweet

Turn the clock ahead from the time I first read “Gifted Hands” to a time during the Bill Clinton administration. The surgeon general had been dismissed from her job and the president had to appoint a new one. Feeling the presence of God all over me, I wrote to him and suggested Dr. Carson. I didn’t hear back but that feeling stayed with me. It was like God was excited about something.

A lot of people say, “I can learn everything I need to know. I can watch this video or I can watch this DVD,” or what have you, but that’s like saying you can develop your muscles by watching somebody else lift weights.”
                                                                    Ben Carson

Now, many years later, a much bigger need exists in our nation. We need more than another slick politician. We need more than a patriot. We need inspiration. I think we need Ben Carson. He just announced his candidacy to run for President of the United States in 2016. Wouldn’t it be something to have a president who is a great role model, as well? I call that an American dream.

What famous actor played Dr. Benjamin Carson in the MOVIE?
Answer: Cuba Gooding Jr.   Click to Tweet

Movie Trailer: if you are reading this by email, please click on the title of this post and you can access the video.

So why is a “mommy blog” writing about Ben Carson? For our kids! It’s not easy to find true role models these days. So many would-be heroes are a disappointment. But Dr. Benjamin Carson is the real deal and a great example for children to emulate.  If you are looking for a great book to read for all ages – school age and above – get a copy of “Gifted Hands.”

Copies of the full version and the kids’ editions are available in your local public library … or you can buy them. However you do it, I do hope you will read it. As I said, we all could use a little inspiration. Get prepared to be amazed.
