First Day of School *

  • Knowing how to start out a brand new class of preschoolers is tricky! If this is their very first school experience, there can be some “first day jitters” for sure.  I have used my USA Flag craft on the first day and it works well.  Our school begins each day with the Pledge of Allegiance, anyway, so I give them a simple mini lesson about the pledge and they slowly repeat after me, as we try saying it.  Our craft is more of that lesson … talking about what the flag represents.  We talk and glue at the same time.  Having Cheerios stars makes it extra fun!

T is for Turtle Preschool Craft with 3-D Eyes

Little 3-D marshmallow eyes give this turtle preschool craft some dimension – cuter than cute!
T is for Turtle preschool craft with 3-D marshmallow eyes #kidcrafts

Oh, how I have looked forward to teaching this lesson about turtles. In previous years, our preschool class studied  T is for Tee Pee,  T is for Turkey and T is for Teeth. It was time to do turtles – especially with the fond memories I have of “my own” turtle named Manfred. *Read the amazing story below.

Fun Facts We Learned About Turtles

  • Some live on land, some live in water.
  • The ones who live on land have stumpy legs. Sea turtles and other water-dwellers have webbed feet.
  • Turtles can be itty-bitty small or big huge!* (tortoises)
  • Turtles are reptiles.
  • Turtles eat a variety of foods. Some eat vegetation. Some eat insects. Some eat animals.
  • Baby turtles hatch from eggs using a “tooth” to chip their way out!

The Story:  How My Second Grade Class Found A Tortoise

T is for Turtle and T is for Tortoise preschool lesson with a fun real story about a tortoise
My Tortoise Story:  this real life event is affectionately remembered by me as “the best day ever!” Long long ago, in a place far, far away (Upstate New York) there was a second grade class –my second grade class–  and there was a little 8 year old girl in that class, that would be me. Though this event happened far in the past, the images will stay with me forever.
During recess, our class was playing outside on the playground. Suddenly, a real live huge and I mean GIGANTIC tortoise slowly crept out of the woods. He was so big that two children hopped on his back, to the great distress of the teachers. Shocked at what they were witnessing, the teachers couldn’t move fast enough. “Get off. Get off!”  and ” Keep away from his mouth!” they yelled to their giggling little students. The students did get off but he was soon surrounded by a sea of wondering children. Can you imagine our parents when they asked us how school was that day? LOL!  By the way, we named him “Manfred.”
Somebody – probably the principal  – called for help and soon the police arrived. It isn’t clear to me whether we were still outdoors when Manfred the tortoise was taken away but he did become a permanent resident of the local zoo. Manfred kept his name and he lived there for decades. He passed away a few years ago and it has been said that he was well over 100 years old. When I read the news,  I kind of felt like a friend had died. Manfred the Tortoise will always have a special place in my heart.

T is for Turtle Paper Plate Craft

This craft is simple and fun to make. I had run out of googly eyes so I came up with this brainstorm – marshmallow eyes! I had mini’s on hand. I cut them in half, put a dot of black paint on each and Voila! Eyes! I like them better than the googlies.

Use mini-marshmallows and a dot of paint to make 3-D eyes for your turtle craft

Supplies
Plain white paper plate
Green construction paper
Turtle part template on white paper
Marshmallows: mini and large
Small paintbrush
Cotton swab
Tempera paints
Stapler
Tape
Black marker
White school glue
T is for Turtle
Directions
Cut the small marshmallows in half.
Paint a black tempera paint pupil on each marshmallow “eye ball”*

You will find that they harden a bit in a short period of time.

Template for the parts to make a T is for Turtle paper plate craft with your #kids

How to Make Your Turtle Paper Plate Craft

Cut out the turtle parts from your template.
Tape the tail onto the legs part of the turtle.
Now you will have two parts: front and bottom
Trace the front and back onto green paper and cut them out.
Staple front to one side of a paper plate shell making sure that the “dome” part of the shell will be on the correct side. You don’t want the staples and tape to show.
Do the same on the other end for the bottom legs with tail of the turtle.
Tip:  you can also use some tape to secure it.
Glue the marshmallow eyes on the head.
Draw the nose and mouth using the marker.
Using large marshmallows, dot colored tempera paint all over the paper plate, decorating his shell.
You now have one adorable turtle!

Enjoy!

F is for Frog Preschool Craft

This F is for Frog kids craft is so special. The frog “leaps” for joy and so will you. Think about it. Can you imagine the glee when a little preschooler brings this project home to show everyone that his frog is hopping on its lily pad? You will love the excitement.

Adorable craft F is for Frog for preschool

As craft projects go, this one takes some additional adult preparation. Typically,  young children should experience cutting paper as often as possible.  This craft, though, would be doomed to failure in the hands of a 3 year old with scissors. It is difficult to cut out. For that reason, I prepare the pieces in advance. I come to school with the small pieces pre-cut and sorted into individual plastic bags. Each child gets one. The extra preparation makes it fun, not frustrating, to do.

Frog On A Lily Pad Kids Craft

Card stock (white)

Green copy paper for lily pads.

Glitter

Gluesticks

White school glue

Scissors

Green crayons

Free Printable Templates (below)

Side view of the frog kids craft where you can see the lily on the pad.

Directions

Print an F is for Frog sheet, which will be the base, using either white or light blue card-stock.

Print lily pads on green paper and cut them out.

Print frog outlines, eye balls, bugs, dots, lily onto white card-stock.

Laminate the pages of parts (not the frog – the kids will color it.)*

Why laminate? Little hands and ink jet print don’t always go well together. The ink can run or smear. Before cutting them out, I laminate the small parts including the eyes, bugs and flower for the lily pad to preserve the images.

Scotch thermal laminators are a teacher's best friend - moms love them, too!

Cut out the parts ahead of time for the students, then have them assemble the craft for themselves.

Color the frog with green crayon.

Glue the green lily pad onto the middle of the F is for Frog sheet, using a gluestick.

Glue eyes onto the frog

Glue bugs and the lily flower onto the lily pad.

Put a couple of streaks of white school glue onto the pad and sprinkle glitter on them.

Glue the frog to the spring and the lily pad.

Make a spring out of cardstock to attach to your frog on the lily pad to make it seem to hop! #preschool

HOW TO MAKE THE FROG’S SPRING: cut a rectangular piece of cardstock 1 inch wide by 4 inches long. Fold it into quarters. Glue one end to the center of the lily pad, put glue on the other end of the spring and press the frog onto it. Now you have a hopping frog on its own lily pad.

How To Make A Cute Little Toilet Paper Roll Penguin

P is for Penguin Toilet Paper Roll Craft for preschool

Letter P is for Penguin is a wonderful preschool theme and there are so many cute penguin crafts for little children.    I particularly love this toilet paper roll penguin craft.
We studied penguins in my class last week and they just loved it. Penguins are so fascinating, it was easy to engage my students in our lesson from start to finish. We learned some fun facts about penguins, watched a short video and made a great craft.
This toilet paper roll craft is a project that children are so proud to display when they bring it home. Older children can easily cut out every piece. We were dealing with time constraints so I prepared most of the pieces in advance. That way everyone would be able to get theirs done. Wait till you see some of my children’s creations (below.) Don’t you just love the one with the beak on its forehead? Adorable!

Enhance your lesson with fun facts about penguins! A few that preschoolers will love are:

  • Penguins only live in Antarctica and other places in the southern hemisphere -South Pole- not the North Pole.
  • Penguins cannot fly. Their wings serve as flippers for swimming.
  • Penguins are fast swimmers and spend half of their day in the water.
  • Penguin parents both raise their babies, called “chicks.”
  • The Emperor Penguin is the tallest – up to 47 inches (3.91 feet)
  • The daddy Emperor Penguin protects the egg of its chick by resting it on his feet, to keep the egg warm.

Paint With Q-Tips – Letter Q Preschool Activity

Painting dots with  Q-tips is a simple fine motor skill activity for 3 and 4 year olds to do and, guess what, children and adults of ALL ages love it, too!

Q painting for kids #preschool
Our letter Q day in preschool this year was Q is for Queen. We made a really cute queen paper bag puppet as our craft. Since there really wasn’t enough about queens to fill up the day, we branched out to more Q words: Quick, Quack, Quail, Quarter, Quilt and Q-tip. Painting dots with q-tips is a fun fine motor skill activity for 3 and 4 year olds.

Tip: If you are aiming for it to look like a quilt, help them think it through. They should concentrate colors in groups. I found that my 3 year olds really didn’t do that and some even rubbed the paint on instead of dotting it. No problem!   EVERYONE had FUN!

Letter Q is for Queen Preschool Lesson and Paper Bag Puppet Craft

Letter Q preschool lesson is not as easy to pull together as it may seem. I was thrilled when I found a free printable for a queen paper bag puppet. It was the perfect craft for letter Q! So Q is for Queen became the theme of the day.
Paper bag hand puppet Letter Q is for Queen #preschool lesson

As I sat down with my little class to talk about the mysteries of the letter Q, we began by talking about what it looks like. As I only had one day to discuss this wondrous letter, we concentrated on capital letter Q.

First, I wrote the letter C on the board and asked them “what letter is this?” They all chimed in “C”  Then I closed it up and they yelled “O”  Then I showed them the squiggly that makes an O turn into a Q.

Finally, we talked about words that start with the letter Q. We touched upon Quail, Quarter, Quick, Quack, one of my favorites “Quiet” and Q-Tip. We eventually made our way to our topic of the day – Queen.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

I asked them “What is a queen?”

“Princess.”
“King, but a girl.”
We even discussed the concept of authority.
Queens (in theory) have authority. “They tell you what to do and you have to do it!”
I printed out photos of the most famous queen alive today: Queen Elizabeth
Letter Q is for Queen preschool lesson, paper bag puppet craft
My smart little kiddos were quick to answer my “queen” questions:
“What is a queen’s house called?” Castle
“What is her chair called?” Throne
“What does she ride in?” Carriage
“What does she usually wear on her head?” Crown
“Who protects and fights for her?” Knights
I printed out photos of each for visual aids.

Finally, we made our paper bag puppets!

  • Color the queen.
  • Cut out the queen into two parts.
  • Glue a jewel to the top of the crown using white school glue.
  • Place the paper bag, flap up, on a hard surface.
  • Lift the flap and glue stick liberally.
  • Press the chin/mouth part of the queen’s face on the glue. Take care not to glue the bag shut. You want the mouth to open and close.
  • Now close the flap and glue-stick the brown square on the bag like crazy!
  • Press the top of her head on that part, aim it so that the upper part of her lip covers the tongue. You should only see the tongue when the puppet’s mouth moves.
  • Done!

As I said, the letter Q has lots of possibilities but I was stretched to find enough material for any given Q word. As a result we read books on more than one Q topic:

That very same day,  we did a great Q-tip painting activity using the letter Q.  The kids had lots of fun. I love painting other ways than just paint and paint brush. So far we have used plastic forks, marshmallows, shaving cream, sponges and now q-tips.

Enjoy!

H is for Helicopter Preschool Craft

Letter H is for Helicopter craft made with craft sticks, cotton balls, colored paper and lots of glue! This craft works very well for H is for Help, too!

H is for helicopter preschool craft #kids #helicopter

The Letter H lesson in my preschool class last week was based on the word HELP. We learned about all sorts of ways people can get and give help. We studied first responders as well: firemen, police officers, life guards, crossing guards, doctors, nurses … we really worked H is for Help up one side and down the other.

I got a great book about helicopters – High Flying Helicopters (Amazing Machines) –  to read to my little students. We learned that helicopters are often used to rescue people and animals.  And, over the years I have read a great little story book to my kiddos called Elecopter!  It tells of an ELEPHANT HELICOPTER who rescues (helps) others.  Totally fun!

Quite by accident, I discovered that one of our classroom dads is an Army Chaplain. When she saw the photo of a big military helicopter carrying a heavy vehicle, little Miss E cried out “My daddy does that!”  That was a fun moment 🙂

To fill out the lesson we learned the simpler parts of the aircraft: cockpit, tail boom, tail fin, rotors and landing skids. And then we made this simple craft!

One of my favorite letter lessons is Letter D is for Dinosaur. Fun craft, excellent hands-on activity and loads of learning fun!

Letter D is for Dinosaur paper plate craft - so cute!

This craft was one of the highlights of our D is for Dinosaur day in our preschool class, along with the ever-popular DIY Dinosaur Egg Learning Activity.

D is for Dinosaur Paper Plate Craft for Kids

The key to the success of this paper plate craft is two-fold.

  • ONE:  Mark each plate with a pattern prior to class.
  • TWO: Plan the painting portion for early morning and the construction phase for afternoon when the paint has dried.
  • Tip #1: for a large group of children, write their names on the plate BEFORE painting so that you can tell them apart.
  • Tip #2: have at least one extra plate pattern handy in case someone makes a “boo boo.”

Step 1 Prepare. Gather your supplies – draw the pattern onto the BACK of the plates – cut the sponges into smaller rectangles for easy use.
Step 2 Have the children sponge-paint the foundation color on the FRONT of the plate.
Step 3 Using marshmallows, dot contrasting colored dots on it. Let dry.
Step 4 Cut the lines on the back of the dry plate.
Step 5 Assemble using clear tape or brass brads.
NOTE: start this project in the morning to allow plenty of drying time. Resume later in the day for steps 4 & 5.
TIP:  before doing anything else, put the child’s name on the BACK of the plate where the pattern is drawn.

I was tickled to see the personality that showed up in each and every dinosaur.
FUN NOTE>>  The dinosaur with the white body is an example of a rescue operation.  Miss E had a scissor-happy time and, when she was done,  her dinosaur body was destroyed. So the teachers grabbed a white plate to cut a new dinosaur body for her to start over again and she actually made a very attractive, “designer” version that we all loved!  She was one happy little 4 year old!

The day started out with a guessing game where everyone volunteered kinds of animals that THEY had seen in a zoo. I printed many photos of the likely candidates and, as the children shared, we displayed the corresponding picture.
Later that day, during craft time, we made our own little “zoo” with animals that can be seen through the bars of the cage. I wanted them to have something memorable for the letter Z to take home.

Tip:  I had some animal stickers on hand. What I lacked were enough jungle animals to make this craft special. So, I made a page using clipart of tigers and elephants, plenty so that each student would have them for their zoo cage as well. I printed the animals on cardstock for durability and laminated them but laminating is not necessary for the success of the craft.

Tip: If you do not have animal stickers, you can use animal crackers!
