Sewing Tip You Will Not Believe!

This sewing tip is called “the Secret of the Red Dot” and, I kid you not, with 50+ years of sewing experience this is the first time I have ever heard it!

Sewing Tip

Have you seen seam ripping tools?  They are hand-held and have a sharp point.  There is also another protrusion with a little red ball … a red dot… on the end.  How many times I have poked holes in the fabric? Ugh, and it could have been so easily avoided.

This blog contains Amazon Affiliate links ♥

Before I say it what the secret is, just watch this quick video where I learned this nifty “best kept secret” tip!

So, here’s the BIG SECRET   if you insert the point that has the red dot, instead of the sharp point, and rip a seam, you will not put holes in the garment!  So simple.  So unknown-ish.  OK, someone out there knows but I sure did not. LOL!

Anybody know what that red dot on your seam ripper is there for? Why did it take me so long to find out??? #sewing #tips #today Share on X

How To Thread A Needle By Hand

Threading a needle sounds like such a simple thing to do but, for many, it is not. Needle threading requires a certain amount of dexterity with your hands. If you find yourself often saying that you are “all thumbs,” this may be a challenging task.

It also requires excellent vision. With or without glasses, it is helpful to be able to SEE the hole in the needle and the end of your thread. When I was a little girl, my mom would call to me with “bring your eyes over here” when she was attempting to thread a needle. She had fuzzy vision and mine was 20-20! I’d get that needle threaded for her in moments.
Now, even with glasses on, it isn’t quite that simple for me to do but I have a trick that helps me so much that I wanted to share it with you.

The Key To Threading A Sewing Needle By Hand

When you are threading a needle, hold the eye of the needle over a light colored surface. If you hold it over a dark background, the hole will disappear. You may never find it. Holding it over something white or very light will make that hole so much easier to find.
tips, household hints, beginner sewing, crafts sew, needle, thread, DIY
So here are the simple steps for threading a needle by hand:
1.Get your eye glasses, if you wear them for reading, and put them on.
2.Cut the end of the thread with a clean cut, on a slight angle.
3.Lick your forefinger and thumb lightly to dampen them.
4.Run the last inch of that thread to the end, between that finger and thumb. That will bring your thread to a better point.
5.Hold the sewing needle in the middle with the eye of the needle (the hole) over a light colored background, in good light.
Tip: do not allow the end of the thread to be too long or it will be “floppy.” Only have a little bit showing so that you can control where it goes.
6.Aim the trimmed, dampened end of the thread at the eye and push it through.
7.Pull the thread through to the other side and pull both ends even.
8.You did it! Ready to sow. Well, almost…

How To Make Colorful Chair Covers for Your Preschool Classroom

So, why ever would I make chair covers for my preschool class? It is a lot of work.  One good reason is that preschoolers [and kindergartners, too] love having name tags on their seats. That, in itself, is motivation.

Make colorful chair covers for your preschool classroom #preschool

In previous times, there were easier ways to mark my students’ chairs. For years I had taped laminated tags with their names onto the backs of their chairs. You would have thought that taping the tags to the table in front of their chairs was the best but the tags get destroyed so much more quickly. One good spill from the juice box will ruin a tag, even a laminated one.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

This year, our school moved into a new building. We are renting space and the chairs belong to the landlord. They are painted and taping tags to painted chairs pulls the paint right off them when they are removed.

That is when I got a brilliant idea. I would make slipcovers to go over the backs of the chairs. Velcro has a new product that adheres to fabric. How perfect is that! Now, I can move the labels from chair to chair in seconds, a valuable feature if we have a “chair-identity-crisis.” [This is preschool. That kind of crisis happens – trust me.]

Chair covers for the classroom #school

I wanted the slipcovers to be identical and bright. I was so excited to find bright red canvas upholstery fabric to use. Canvas-like upholstery fabric is very durable and holds its shape well. The fabric I purchased is also washable in cold water. I plan to use them year after year so that is important.

☑️Tip: if I had been unable to find the canvas fabric, my next choice would have been wide wale corduroy. It also has some firmness to the fabric and would be very durable!

How To Make Covers For Chairs In Preschool With Removable Name Tags

These slipcovers for chairs are as simple as putting a pillowcase over the chair, only much better.

Supplies

Canvas upholstery fabric cut in a long rectangle.

Sewing machine

Thread

Fabric pins

Measuring tape

Sewing scissors

Velcro for FABRIC

Making a chair cover

Directions

  • Measure the back of the chair for the widest part and the length you want for your chair cover.
  • Cut the fabric so that the width is 2 – 3 inches wider than the widest part of the back of the chair.
  • Cut the length of the rectangle of fabric so that it is 2 times the length that you want the slip cover to be as the finished product PLUS 2 inches-to account for the hem you will sew at the bottom.
  • Fold one end of the rectangle over about 1/2 inch and double it over again another 1/2 inch. Pin it and sew straight across it creating your first hem.
  • Do the same for the opposite end. Be sure that you fold it in the proper direction so that when you sew your slip cover (Reminder – think “PILLOWCASE”) both hems wind up on the inside of the chair cover.

Note: the TOP of the chair cover will be seamless since your piece of fabric is so long. Just fold it over so that the hemmed ends meet. It is neater and less work, too.

  • Fold the fabric in half, raw edges of the hems will be on top.
  • Pin each side and sew a simple seam down each side.
  • Turn it right side out and there you go! You have a chair cover.
  • Now, cut a piece of the SCRATCHY side of the Velcro, 2 inches long.
  • Peel off the paper and press the Velcro onto one side of the chair cover so that it is centered and just a couple of inches from the top.
  • Let it dry for 24 hours before attaching a label.

How To Make Name Tags For Preschool Chairs

Supplies

White card stock paper

Laminator sheets

Laminator

Sample of name tags that you can make yourself from our FREE printable

Directions

You can make your own template or use mine. I have saved it as a Word document so that you can add the names yourself.

Get free printable name tag template here.

Insert a transparent text box on the center of each tag on the page.

Type in a child’s name on each tag.

Set your printer’s settings to “color” and print the page onto white card stock paper.

Preheat your laminator.

Insert the sheet of tags into a laminating sheet and run it through your laminator.

Now, cut out the tags.*

Tip:  I suggest that you NOT use your sewing scissors to cut out the tags. Using sewing scissors on laminated paper will dull them. Use another pair of scissors to do this task and save the sewing scissors for sewing!

Finally, cut a 2″ piece of the FUZZY side of Velcro.

Peel the paper backing off the Velcro and apply it to one of the name tags.

Now, stick it onto the scratchy side that you put on a chair cover.

Isn’t it the best? Yes!

Get your FREE NAME TAG template here!*

*When you first click on this, the images do not appear. I have NO idea why. If you select the option to open it in Google docs, they finally do pop up for you. Save it to your computer and add names using text boxes.

Enjoy!

How To Make A Cute Drawstring Bag for a Baby Gift Basket

Drawstring bags are a simple means of transporting and/or storing things.
Whether they are nesting places for children’s toys or a quick way to get assorted items from “here” to “there,” drawstring bags are easy to make and do come in handy. This particular version is ultra-simple to create as it is sown from a pillowcase.  Some of the sewing has already been done for you, as a result. I made these bags to put in a baby gift basket as “mommy on the go” bags.
How to make a drawstring bag for a baby gift basket and other uses #sewing

Babies, babies, BABIES! Of all celebrations, I love baby showers the most. Our family has five babies right now from newborn to just under the age of 2… and there is a sixth little love on the way… so we have many!

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

For one of our recent baby showers, I decided to make a baby gift basket with “mommy grab ‘n go” bags inside. They were filled with essentials that mom might need when she is out and about with her little ones: diapers, baby wipes, bib, receiving blanket, pacifier and a trash bag to wrap up soiled diapers and wipes while on the road.

The mommy grab ‘n go bags are  easy to make, even for novices.  I decided to buy some vivid blue and white pillow cases to make mine – since the baby was a boy. The wide border at the top of the cases is already a channel for the ribbon or drawstring to run through. Much less work!

Baby gift basket with DIY drawstring mommy grab n go bags

How To Make a Drawstring Bag

Tools you will need: scissors, pins, sewing machine, thread, needle (for hand sewing,) iron (optional), 2 pillow cases, ribbon.

I will walk you through it detail but, in short, here are the steps:

  1. measure the pillowcase for size
  2. cut the pillowcase in half (for two bags, you will have leftover fabric*)
  3. pin each pillowcase in half, lengthwise, inside out.
  4. pin along the bottom
  5. using a sewing machine, sew across the bottom and up one side.
  6. STOP sewing as you get to the channel. DO NOT sew it closed.
  7. finish the edges of the open channel, by hand.
  8. turn the newly sewn bag rightside out.
  9. iron it.
  10. attach a safety pin to one end of the ribbon and feed it through the channel.
  11. remove the safety pin.
  12. fill it with “goodies”
  13. done!
*Notice that I used some of the leftover fabric to make a matching bow for the outside of the gift basket.

You can get two bags out of one pillow case with ease. Since the receiving blanket and multiple diapers would take up the bulk of the room,  I laid them on top of a pillowcase to get a feel for just how big they should be. You may want to do the same, assuming you know what will be stored in yours.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts

Tip: Lay a straight piece of paper on the fabric to use as a guide to cut the bottom of the bag in a straight line.
Cut all the way across the bottom of the pillowcase for the bottom seams of the bags.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
Now, cut each side seam all the way down. You now have TWO separate pieces of fabric, each with a ready-made channel for the top where the ribbons will be run through.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
Fold each bag in half, inside out, with the channels meeting each other. Remember NOT to sew that end shut. It has to be left open, edges finished off by hand, to run the drawstring ribbon through.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
This is what the channel looks like.

DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts

Pin each bag and, using a sewing machine, sew across the bottom and up the side up to, but not including, the channel.
Turn the bag rightside out. Hand-sew the edges of the channel, folding the edges inside the channel, to make a nice neat piece.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
 Iron them.

DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts

The ribbon or cord that you will use for the drawstring should be several inches longer than the channel on each end when the bag is laying out flat. You need substantial ends to be able to pull and tie them. I decided to use a pretty blue ribbon that would be tied in a bow.
Take a safety pin and attach it to the end of your ribbon. Now, thread it through the channel, leaving some of the ribbon hanging on one side and more on the other.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
Fill the bags with all the goodies!

Make An Adorable “Welcome Doggie” Busy Bag For A New Puppy

Love puppies? Think about when you first brought your little fur baby home. She was cuddly, licky, snuggly, squirmy and truly a baby.
pets, pet care, dog care, puppy care, pet owner

If you haven’t had a young pup in a while, memories may have faded into everything fun. We all loved it, didn’t we? But with her youth comes messes. She poops – she pees – she may even have an upset tummy once in a while and your new little love, who doesn’t know anything,  lets it all happen on your beautiful clean rug.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

My little gal, Sadie [100lbs of yellow lab loveliness] was just the size of a big tea cup when we met her 4 years ago. Of all the silly things, this picture of her doing her business is the first one I took! Believe me, the lawn is not the only place where that happened – not by a longshot.
She is what inspired me to make this new-dog busy bag for my brother’s family. They are getting a new puppy and plan on naming him “Boomer” Cute! As we all know, when puppies don’t have enough to do, they find things to do. Sadie did! I remember the day she first discovered mud. She enjoyed every gooshy minute of it. As you can see by the picture below, she got on the carpet before I could catch her. Aren’t those muddy paws adorable? Of course, the carpet needed some TLC after I captured it on film.
puppy care, carpet cleaning, dog busy bag
Then there was the day she brought a TREE into the house (OK… part of a tree.) She needed to chew and took it upon herself to solve the problem – thankfully it was a tree and NOT the furniture!  With that experience in mind, I decided to make a busy bag for the new arrival including the most important part: STAINMASTER® Carpet Pet Stain Remover.
STAINMASTER® Carpet Pet Stain Remover is the best way to be prepared for the inevitable messes pets will make. Whether it is the occasional piddle or poop on the rug or muddy paws, Stainmaster cleans it up great. Not only does it do an excellent cleaning job, leaving an invisible protective shield protecting your carpet from resoiling, but it deodorizes beautifully, too.
Check it out after you use it. There will not be a trace of sticky residue where you applied it. None! I only wish I had had it when Sadie was little. I use it all the time now and, guess what? It also works great on other everyday kinds of stains like coffee, grape juice, jelly, ketchup, chocolate syrup, motor oil (YES!) and soil.
#NewPetNoStains
You can find Stainmaster products at your local Target. That is where I bought my first bottle!
So, while I was there, I got the brilliant idea to buy one of the red Target recyclable bags to use for my new pet busy bag! Made it so easy:) Next, I went to the pet supplies section of Target and bought some dog toys including teethers and chew toys plus a few plush toys, as well. Along with the stain remover, this will make a great starter gift for their new arrival.
dogs, DIY, crafts, gift idea
How ever did Sadie figure out those were DOG toys, anyway? I thought  had been discreet. Oh well, I may have to give them to her and go buy some more for Boomer. LOL.

How To Make A Drawstring Bag From A Pillowcase

Drawstring bags are a simple means of transporting and/or storing things. Pirates used them to carry their gold doubloons and other treasures- or at least they do in the movies. Cowboys and gold miners did in the Wild West, too, didn’t they? Maybe their moms made them! LOL

Whether it is a nesting place for children’s toys or a quick way to get assorted items from “here” to “there,” drawstring bags are easy to make and do come in handy.

Babies, babies, BABIES! Of all the celebrations, I love welcoming BABIES into the world. Our family has had three babies born in the past 6 months -all boys. They are still out numbered by our little girls 4-1, though.

We had a shower recently for one of the little lads and i decided to make a baby gift basket with “mommy grab ‘n go” bags inside. They were filled with essentials that mom might need when out and about with her little ones: diapers, baby wipes, bib, receiving blanket, pacifier and a trashbag to wrap up soiled diapers and wipes while on the road.

The mommy grab n go bags are quite easy to make, even for novices.  I decided to buy some vivid blue and white pillow cases to make mine – since the baby was a boy. The wide border at the top of the cases is already a channel for the ribbon or drawstring to run through. Much less work!

Tip: Lay a straight piece of paper on the fabric to use as a guide to cut the bottom of the bag in a straight line.
Cut all the way across the bottom of the pillowcase for the bottom seams of the bags.

Now, cut each side seam all the way down. You now have TWO separate pieces of fabric, each with a ready-made channel for the top where the ribbons will be run through.

Fold each bag in half, inside out, with the channels meeting each other. Remember NOT to sew that end shut. It has to be left open, edges finished off by hand, to run the drawstring ribbon through.

This is what the channel looks like.

Pin each bag and, using a sewing machine, sew across the bottom and up the side up to, but not including, the channel.
Turn the bag rightside out. Hand-sew the edges of the channel, folding the edges inside the channel, to make a nice neat piece.

 Iron them.

Fill the bags with all the goodies!

What other uses can you think of for drawstring bags?
Any thoughts on what else we can put in a mommy grab ‘n go bag?
