How To Keep Squirrels and Chipmunks Out Of Your Potted Plants

I have always loved having beautiful flowers in my spring and summer gardens. Each year I would dig and plant and cultivate this developing cascade of color.  It was fun and so satisfying as I watched them bloom and grow.

Years went by and it became more challenging to actually create gardens so I began to use potted plants instead.  Truly, I wish I had thought of it sooner.  Having a number of pots full of gorgeous blooms are just as pretty and so portable!  I can move them around at will, making them more visible from my office windows whenever I want to.  I get to look at them while I work at home. It is a win-win.

.

Then, several years ago, something began to happen.  Most often the trouble was with my potted New Guinea Impatiens.  I still don’t know why they are more susceptible. Perhaps the other types of flowers are less inviting.  The others in the untouched pots were a combination of yellow marigolds and purple petunias. Those pots were seldom disturbed but the ones with new guineas, which are my favorites, were attacked unmercifully.  They must be sweeter to the furry little troublemakers who came by when I wasn’t looking and MESSED WITH MY PLANTS!

It took me a few days to catch on.  At first I wasn’t sure why I was finding soil from the pots tossed all over my deck.  Then I realized that there was also a big hole in the dirt in one of them.  Another time, the plant was actually removed from the pot and laying on the ground!  Oooh, that made me mad!  What on earth was happening?

Finally, I saw the culprit running away from the scene of the crime.  A squirrel had a crab apple in his mouth that he had just retrieved from where he STASHED it in my plant!  Time went by and later I saw a chipmunk digging in the dirt. A friend suggested that chipmunks like to nibble on the roots.  This was getting serious; they were teaming up!

To try to solve the problem I looked into repellants and other answers I had seen online.  Somehow that did not sit well with me. I was pretty sure they would not work but I definitely needed a solution.

So, I prayed about it.  “Lord, there has to be a way for me to get along with these furry creatures.  You made them!  What do I do?”  Then I had an idea!

.

.

Squirrels and Chipmunks Apparently Don’t Like Stones!

So, I bought some bags of small stones – you know, the kind that some people use in the bottom of their fish tanks?  They look really nice in potted plants, too.  As I carefully scattered a thick layer of decorative stones onto the surface of the dirt in each pot, I held the stones back from literally covering the base of the stems.  It made sense to me that the plants would need a little bit of space.

And, then, I watched.

Day after day, no trouble!  The plants flourished.  The stones looked so pretty and so did my flowers!  I just watered as usual and enjoyed them for the rest of the summer.  Yes, decorative stones solved the problem.  This is my third season using this little technique and truly the rodents stay away!  Isn’t that great? You can see the stones surrounding my potted flowers here.  I really love the look!

Gardening  TIP=>     Here is how to enjoy potting your plants indoors without a mess!

.

.

Would you like to hear about another sweet little trick I learned?  I love taking a book outside on a nice day to read but sometimes either bees or mosquitoes get in the way.  Inevitably, they drive me back indoors.

.

Well, yes, again I prayed.  This time I asked Him what is a natural repellant for insects? I instantly heard in my thoughts:  Mint!  Yep.  Mint came to mind.  Previously, I had stayed away from planting mint because it grows so fast; it can take over your gardens and even creep into lawns.

.

Well,    I chose flower pots again and planted mint in them.  The portability of pots pays off.  When I want to relocate from the deck to my front porch,  I just pick up a pot of mint and take it with me.

It helps a lot!

How To Take Attendance At Your Event The Easy Way

When hosting a group event such as a school open house, scout troop meeting, business seminar or church workshop – anything where the attendees will be handed written material – use this technique and you will quickly know who did or did not show up. It is a simple process of elimination.

This blog contains Amazon affiliate links ♥

How to take attendance the easy way

Moms know a whole lot of tricks to make life easier, don’t we! Well, this one I learned as a high school guidance counselor and, later on, as the administrator of a PreK – 12 school. We would have such large events that, when sharing important written information such as the parent-teacher handbook, it was challenging to know who received it and who did not. This technique worked perfectly every time and became a great way of taking attendance!

The simple tip: label it! Yes, whether you write out their names by hand or print off some snazzy labels, put those take-homes into a nice envelop and print their names on the cover. Hand the packets to each attendee. The names of those who did not get theirs are on the outside of the leftover packets.

360 PCS Removable Labels, 14 Colors Self-adhesive Rectangular Stickers Water/Oil/Tear Resistant with Perforation Line for Food Containers Kitchen Restaurant Storage Organization (8 Sheets, 2 Sizes)

colored removable labels

Here is an EXAMPLE:     Today is our annual “meet the teacher” get together for preschool. I wrote a nice 2-page introduction with important FAQ’s like the school hours, what to wear (i.e. if your child comes to school wearing sandals, bring sneakers for gym), food, what fun we will have, etc. Then I printed out copies to give to all of the parents, my teaching assistants and the principal.

Now, I could have labeled the actual page – that method works fine – but today’s meeting is outdoors so,  I chose to use envelopes to protect the letter from the elements. On the outside of each one I wrote “To The Parents Of …” and the child’s name.

*Using the child’s name (first name or first + last name) is helpful since children do not always have the same last name as their parents or guardians.

After the event is over, I can easily figure out who wasn’t there as I will still have their labeled envelop!  I can then either email or mail the information to them or have it ready to hand to them on the first day of school. So simple.

And that’s my little attendance taking tip!

How To Get Fresh Strawberries To Stay Fresh Longer

Strawberries! I have to admit that this title is a little bit misleading but, tell me, have you I struggled with the same frustrations as me? You buy some delicious, ripe red strawberries in quantity, expecting to have use of them for several days. Then, much too soon, you discover that half of those beauties are all fuzzy. Yes, they are spoiled! So, what can you do to get more life out of them?

.

First lesson:  DO NOT WASH THEM – not until you are going to use them. The water shortens their shelflife bigtime. Simply keep them in a cool place on the counter and do nothing until you are ready to make your move – just don’t wait too long.
How to keep strawberries fresh and eat them, too! #strawberry #tips Share on X

Lesson #2: I have finally come to the conclusion that the most cost-effective method that tastes really good is to freeze them. Use all of the fresh ones that you can immediately but plan on freezing the rest within 24-48 hours after you bring them in the door. The only good reason to wait is if they are not all yet ripe. In that case, freeze the ripe ones and give the rest another 12-24 hours on the counter. Then freeze them, too.

Augason Farms Freeze Dried Sliced Strawberries 6.4 oz

freeze dried strawberries

fresh fruit, berries, strawberry, food preparation tips

How To Freeze Fresh Strawberries

1. Cut the tops off the strawberries, first.
2. Rinse them under cool clean water.
3. Lay them out on a clean towel to dry or pat them dry with a paper towel.
4. Place the strawberries in a single layer on a freezer-safe plate or cookie tray that fits in your freezer.
5. Freeze them for 2-3 hours or over night.
6. Remove the frozen strawberries from the tray and place in a freezer bag.
7. Put the bag of strawberries back into the freezer. It is that easy!

Now you have delicious strawberries whenever you want them. Thaw them to top with whipped cream as a quick dessert. Make them into any of a number of strawberry dessert recipes. Even pop a couple of frozen berries into some ice water for a cool, refreshing drink! Use your imagination 🙂 Got any ideas?

Sewing Tip You Will Not Believe!

This sewing tip is called “the Secret of the Red Dot” and, I kid you not, with 50+ years of sewing experience this is the first time I have ever heard it!

Sewing Tip

Have you seen seam ripping tools?  They are hand-held and have a sharp point.  There is also another protrusion with a little red ball … a red dot… on the end.  How many times I have poked holes in the fabric? Ugh, and it could have been so easily avoided.

Before I say it what the secret is, just watch this quick video where I learned this nifty “best kept secret” tip!

So, here’s the BIG SECRET   if you insert the point that has the red dot, instead of the sharp point, and rip a seam, you will not put holes in the garment!  So simple.  So unknown-ish.  OK, someone out there knows but I sure did not. LOL!

Anybody know what that red dot on your seam ripper is there for? Why did it take me so long to find out??? #sewing #tips #today Share on X

The Simple Way To Keep Clutter Out Of Your House!

“But, clutter is already in my house!” Well, this new habit will keep clutter out but it also can get clutter out, if it’s in there. All you have to do is start wherever you are.

Organizing tips, decluttering, home
Clutter has a life of its own, doesn’t it? It grows! Before long, you cannot find your stuff. Hey, you might have places where you can’t even MOVE! Last week we talked about organizing with 5 quick steps to take control. They work so, don’t ignore them!   This lesson presents a habit that, if you get serious about it, will keep clutter from piling up again.

plush hotel quality blue towels

Simple Rule = 1 item in? 2 items go out!

I just used this decluttering technique with some towels. Take a look at the frayed edges of my old towels. New ones were long overdue! I love my new, fluffy blue towels. They are luxurious.
Clutter has a life of its own ... it GROWS! #organizing #tips Share on X
organizing tips that work

Now, do I want to put those old towels back in my closet? No way.

So, I have 3 choices on what to do with them:

  1. Keep them in the garage for rags.
  2. Donate them to an animal shelter or veterinarians office (that’s my preference.)
  3. Or, toss them.

If I cannot get to a donation location in the next week, I will be throwing them out. If I do not get them out of my house quickly, they will stay forever!

TIp: Dragging your heels can turn this new habit into a nice intention that never comes to pass – beware!

Have you tried the 1 in, 2 out method? How did it go? Fun, isn’t it!

Enjoy!

How To Cut A Round Cake … Scientifically!

How to cut a round cake so that it stays moist for days!

round cake cutting tip

It has been commonly accepted that the proper way to slice a round cake is the “triangular piece” or “pie” method. We cut triangles all the way around till it’s gone. But if your cake will not be consumed at one sitting, is there a better way to do it, keeping it moist through and through? Somebody thought so.

This fun video shows you a method developed in 1906. Yes, over a hundred years ago. Will it work on every round cake? I’m not sure. Softer frostings may not be willing to get “banded” together (you’ll see) but it sure could work on many types of round cake!

3 Simple Tips To Help You Save Time In The Kitchen

household hints, kitchen hacks, moms, tips
How much time do you spend in the kitchen? There are times when I feel like I live there. Those are the days that I’d like to do a “Lisa Douglas” of Green Acres fame – clear the table of the dirty dishes,  open the window and throw them out! Lisa takes “speed cleaning” to a whole new level!
In truth, there are ways to cut down the time we spend in the kitchen ⇒ and abandoning the mess is NOT one of them.
This blog contains affiliate links♥

3 Simple Steps To Save Time and Get You Out of the Kitchen Faster

1. Cooking Tip⇒ toss as you go. Put an empty trash bag or plastic food scrap bag in the kitchen sink or on the edge of the counter. As you cut food for your meal, and open up packaging, put the trash all in that bag. You will save steps and time. When you are done, just take the bag out to the trash and say “goodbye!”
Boy helping his mom with the cookings
2. Enlist help from your family. Let them crack open the eggs, stir the mix, set the table. “Many hands make light work.“
3. Double Up! Plan your meals with leftovers in mind. Some families are delighted to enjoy “part 2” of a good meal the next night. For those who require variety, just freeze the second portion to pull out for another day.
My favorite dish to double up on is chili. I make a big pot, which we have with toppings on night #1. The second night, it becomes a topping for hot dogs or as adelicious chili salad served on greens. Then I freeze the remainder to pull out for a meal 2 or more weeks later. Note that the real cooking only took place one time but three great meals were produced. Smart!
So how about you? Any time-saving advice that will get us out of the kitchen faster?

5 Small Storage Tips That Will Inspire Your Decorating

What is there about organizing small spaces that appeals to me? I just love maximizing space so that when you walk into the room you say “wow!”   Yes, it is the “wow factor” that tickles me.

Storage solutions for small spaces #homedecor #storage #tips

So, here are 5 small storage tips I found that will allow you to rearrange a room to make it feel larger but with simple changes.

I had so much fun searching out ideas.  See what I found and tell me what you like best.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

Small Storage Space Tips

Floating Storage – if you have limited surface space, put your walls to work for you and hang “floating” shelves. They keep your floor space free and direct the eye upward. Those blessed with high ceilings will have lots of fun with this!

Now this is the greatest discovery I made in the “shelving” category:  a HIDDEN DESK! There are desks that fold up against the wall when you are not using them and “voila!” fold them down and you have a desk with shelving and storage space, too. One even doubles as a mirror!

I do not want to recommend a specific one, since currently I do not own one yet [I want one, though!] so let me give you the link to a page with many highly recommended folding desks => FOLDING DESKS

Mirrors – properly placed mirrors can optically “enlarge” your space. Bring the outdoors inside.

My mom made great use of this technique. We had a small family room with sliding glass doors going out into a lovely landscaped yard. She mounted two simple but very large mirrors on the wall across from those windows to “bring the outdoors, inside.” It was as if we had that lovely foliage throughout whole room. Just perfect!

Area Rugs – add brightness and definition to spaces with a new rug …. or two! This is a great technique for rooms where you do not want to clutter them up with a lot of furniture. Are you a floor-sitter? Cushy shag rugs make it so comfy!

Hard Working Furniture – use furniture that comes with hidden storage spaces. I love this idea. There are lots of ways that furniture can serve as storage, too. Tables with shelving underneath. Ottomans that double as storage boxes for toys, afghans or whatever. Stylish cabinets with hooks to hang things. Bookcases with removable decorative baskets are trendy.

Wall and Hanging Planters – adding live foliage to a room is invigorating. Rather than taking up counter top or table top space, mount or hang your planters.
