Paddle To The Sea Makes Geography and Art Lessons Fun!

Paddle To The Sea is such a fun way to learn North American geography and so much more. If this is the first you have heard of the classic story, let me tell you just a bit more…

The story, written from the viewpoint of a canoe that was made by a Native American boy, starts up north in Canada. His journey takes Paddle, the little canoe, through wilderness adventures as he travels to the Great Lakes.

What a great way to teach geography --- a book and some soft air dry clay! #school #art #geography Share on X

Students learn about wildlife native to forests, streams, marshes and ponds. There is much opportunity to expand learning by researching topics described in the tale. Readers can learn about saw mills and the iron milling businesses, to name just two. We found videos about the logging business and iron ore mining that further enrich the learning experience.

The children in our home-school group made their own soft air-dry clay canoe sculptures while hearing the Paddle to the Sea book read to them. At the end of each session, we broke into small teams using a big map of Canada and the northern part of the USA.

The children located and labeled the various landmarks named in the story (Lake Nipogan and the Apostle Islands, for example.) Then they opened their laptops and found videos about sawmills, iron mining and the fishing industry on the Great Lakes. A multimedia approach to learning makes it so effective and FUN.

Enjoy!

Welcome!

Welcome to the Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop where we enjoy linking up posts about recipes, crafts, DIY, everyday life & more every Tue at 7:00 pm EST #wwbloghop

Hello my friends. I am so glad you are here. How are the first weeks of fall going for you?  I am loving my new teaching position. I am working four days a week, now, with children ages 3 to 13. The variety is invigorating. All of the children are such fun to hang around with and it sure is challenging to come up with fresh lesson plans for such a cross section of ages.

Please accept my apologies that tonight’s blog hop got posted a little late. My schedule is super busy, now, and to add to it I have been sick so I have been barely pulling everything off.   In all honesty, I felt like today had to be FRIDAY already LOL. I should soon be back on my game in everything.

Hey, our hosts all just want to say THANK YOU to all those who contributed to last week’s party and WELCOME to all the new bloggers who have joined our weekly blog hop. Please invite your blog friends and social network to join us. In fact, how about tweeting it for us????

Let’s Get Inspired!!

Come to a Blog Party on Ducks ‘n a Row

Hey Everyone,

It’s my month to host Happiness is Homemade Link Party October… woohoo. If you are joining from a blog other than mine, I am Linda from A Labour of Life. And I am so happy I live in a World that has Octobers.

I will be hosting all this month and that puts a full Pumpkin Smile on my face. October is Fall and Canadian Thanksgiving and Halloween and did I mention Pumpkin Spice?

hih 291

Happiness is Homemade Features to Start October

This week I selected a little bit of everything Fall, some food, a craft, a diy firepit and even an awesome table. Enjoy and please let’s see what amazing Fall and Halloween ideas you have for Happiness is Homemade.

First up is Virginia Sweetpeas awesome Woodland Tablescape

Today’s Lakeside Woodland Fall Tablescape is a result of a Pinterest challenge that Paula participates in. Apparently it is a monthly challenge hosted by Cindy from County Road 407. Each month Cindy picks a picture from Pinterest and challenges the group to recreate the look. I think I want to get involved with that challenge because y’all know how much I love my tablescapes.

Fresh Vintage by Lisa and Velvet No Sew Pumpkins

velvet no sew pumpkins

How beautiful are these Velvet no sew pumpkins? And so on point. I was at Michael’s this weekend and the shelves were filled with amazing velvet pumpkins. Gone are the traditional Orange. Today’s must haves are great colours with amazing textures.

The Lou Lou Girls and a Fun Pumpkin Pie Crisp

Pumpkin Pie Crisp is an amazing twist on the traditional Apple Crisp. MY mouth was watering just seeing the picture. I could smell the warm hints of pumpkin through my screen. You can bet I have pinned this for a future dessert.

Simply Designing Porch’s Creamy Chicken Tortilla Soup

chicken tortilla soup in a bowl

Can it truly be October without an amazing soup recipe? This delicious dish from Simply Designing Porch is going to become a fall favorite. A Creamy Chicken Tortilla Soup made in the crock pot.

A DIY Firepit and Walkway from Thrifty Diving

diy firepit

The final feature had me drooling in a whole different manner. A homemade firepit anchored in the yard with a gravel walkway feature. DIY Firepit and walkway is on my list of must have’s. Sadly it will mean moving out of the city but I would totally move to have this. I am not kidding you folks, picture this by the lake!

How To Make Play Dough In The Microwave

I love making play dough. In fact, I am making some today!  There is something fun about developing this colorful toy by yourself,  knowing that a child  you love will have hours of play ahead of him. Making microwave play dough is by far the easiest way!
..
.
Microwave Play Dough Recipe #kids #preschool
..
.
Th classic recipe is cooked on the stove, which works great but it takes a lot of “elbow-grease” stirring and stirring. So, when I came across a recipe for MICROWAVE play dough, I had to give it a try.
..
.
Oh my goodness, is this so easy and the play dough turns out just as pliable and deeply colorful as ever. I won’t be making the old recipe again!

Microwave Play Dough Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup water
1 generous T cooking oil
10-20 drops Neon food coloring**
2 tsp. cream of tartar***
1/3 cup salt
1 cup bleached flour*
*Bleached flour is whiter and gives you a truer color.
**Neon food coloring is the most vivid.

Directions

Use a microwave-safe mixing bowl. This process takes about 5 minutes including prep.
Combine water, oil, food coloring and stir.
Add cream of tartar, and stir again.
Add salt, stir.
Gradually add flour and stir as you go along to prevent lumps.
Microwave on high for 30 seconds.*
Stir.
Another 30 seconds.
Stir.
A third time, 30 seconds.
Stir.
A fourth time, 30 seconds.
Stir.
It will now be in a ball.
Let sit for 2 minutes.

.

..

*Tip: Cooking time may vary depending upon microwave ovens and/or the bowls you use. I have found that sometimes I have to add another 30-60 seconds. So, consider total cooking time to be between 2 – 3 minutes at 30 minute intervals.
Remove from bowl and put the play dough ball on a dinner plate to cool.*
Wrap cooled play dough in plastic wrap or a zippered plastic food storage bag and store at room temperature.
*I spray the plate with cooking spray to make it easily removable from the plate.

Happy fall ya’ll!!

Fall is officially here with all the pumpkins, falling leaves, cooler temps, hot cocoa by the fire and picking apples. Another thing we don’t do here in Central Florida is to go apple picking since there are no groves in the area. I have been wanting to make some Apple Butter so badly. Do you like to go apple picking?

Some sad news to pass along. Our long-time blogger co-host, Colleen from Bakes and Blunders, is having to leave our group. Her husband is deploying soon and she will be so busy in her life with that. Be sure to stop by her lovely blog and check out all the wonderful baking posts she has. I love her post on her 1st year of blogging.

We only wish her the best and prayers for husbands safe return from deployment. She will be missed!!

Oh a happy note, I would love to introduce to you our newest blogger co-host, Beth from A Meal in Mind. Her blog is filled with so many yummy recipes and for those who are gluten-free, you really need to check out those recipes.

Stop by and say hi to Beth and be sure to check out her social media below.
