7 Best Accessories For Those Who Write All Day Long

Do you know someone who sits at a computer all day long?  Maybe it is you!  Perhaps you are a blogger or maybe you are a virtual assistant, freelance writer, or a graphic designer. There are so many careers that require sitting at a computer, either at the office or working from home. For sure, writers sit at their computers for many hours at a time.

Great gifts for people who write all day long #tips #giftideas

Working from home can be a dream come true but any profession that requires sitting for 8 to 10 to 12 hours a day, or more, has its health hazards.  Sitting in one position for too long is a strain on your frame. It cuts the circulation.  If you work long hours at a computer, you need a strategy for getting up and changing your position regularly.

Best Accessories For Writers

As a blogger, I sometimes work at a desk, sometimes at the kitchen counter or at a table outdoors on the deck. Then, in the evening, I move to the family room where I can work on my laptop so that the whole family can be together. Those evening hours are often used to schedule social media shares. It is less work but, again, I am sitting! It has been recognized that standing, while you are working at a computer, is an excellent alternative. You can stand some of the day and sit at other times.

So here are some gadgets that I found to help minimize the toll that a writing career can take on you. These accessories can make a world of difference to your overall health and vitality…

7 Best Accessories To Help Those Who Work At Computers All Day Long

Standing Desk – neither sitting nor standing for hours on end is good. The healthy trend is to include adjustable standing desks in the office and at home. My brother purchased one for each of the designers in his company, so I have seen them in action. They can be installed right on your existing desk. It is a breeze to adjust the height so that you can stand for a while and then sit down again. What a great invention!

Anti Fatigue Standing Mat – whether you have decided to step into “standing desk world” – or are doing what I do which is to clear a section of the kitchen counter where I set up my laptop – you need to cushion those feet! My kids bought me a pad to stand on in my kitchen and it really reduces the shock to my hips, knees, ankles and feet. I always use it when I write at the counter. I also use it when I am standing at the counter to cook. (Note: wearing great athletic shoes and socks helps, too. Wear anything that can provide comfort, support and reduce shock.)

Ergonomic Mouse – they are scientifically designed mouses (mice?) that allow for easy motion and reduced stress.

Laptop Pad – for those who like to work while sitting on the sofa or lounging in bed, a laptop pad or couch table is a great help. Laptop pads shield your legs from the heat of the laptop, are anti-slip and many styles include a mouse pad tray. I just bought the Max Smart Laptop Pad after a couple of silly years of using a cardboard beverage tray from the local fast food restaurant to keep the laptop off of my lap. Oh my goodness, what a joy to have this pad!

Office Foot Rest – Take some of the strain off your hips and legs by using an ergonomic foot rest while you sit at your desk.

Keyboard and Mouse Wrist Rests – prevent fatigue and damage to your hands, wrists and arms as you work long hours at the computer by using specially designed rests. They are not expensive, as things go, and the benefits will save you a world of hurt

Comfortable Desk Chair – if your desk chair is uncomfortable, it is time to invest in a new one. There are many ergonomic designs. I was fortunate enough to try a new chair at the design company where I work that is perfect for me. Though this chair was not described as “ergonomic,”  I can sit at my desk for hours and feel great.

So I bought one for my home office=>☑️ see my FAVORITE desk chair ever!

Sticky Notes Are Such Nifty Little Gadgets

Sticky notes are such wonderful little gadgets #tips

Can you imagine your world without sticky notes? I sure can’t. I use Post-It®s for so many more things than just leaving myself notes. I love them so much, I wish I had invented them.

Hey, who did invent them anyway? Dr. Spencer Silver, did, that’s who. And he kind of did it accidentally! Don’t you love it?

This blog contains affiliate links.

A brief history of Post-It® notes.

Previously only available in light yellow 3 inch by 3 inch pads, sticky notes now come in just about every size, shape and color imaginable. They even have a new Extreme Post-It® that is tougher and water resistant, too!

So, let’s talk about re-purposing them a little bit. Put your thinking caps on. What other ways can you use sticky notes?

In a hurry? ☑️ Go get a great buy on Sticky Notes here! All shapes and sizes.

The Many Uses For Sticky Notes

How about these?

  1. Bookmarks: stickies are so easy to just pop in wherever you left off! Use them in magazines, too. Label the ends to help you find that favorite recipe or best article.
  2. Cable tags: before removing the cables from your computer or other electronics, label where they go! Makes life so much easier when you put things back together again. Just write where it came from and then wrap it around the cord.
  3. Clean your computer keyboard: use the sticky side of the post-it to swipe through the rows of keys, grabbing lint and crumbs along the way.
  4. Computer desktop: this can mean one of two things. Either literally stick a note to the computer screen or download some free software that allows you to put stickies on the desktop electronically. I love mine!
  5. Flag a stack of papers: use sticky notes as index tabs. If I don’t have the micro-minis on hand, I just cut the next size up in half! Waste not, want not.
  6. Labels: label food in the refrigerator to identify contents, when it was first made and who can eat it (or not).
  7. Story boarding: use stickies on a white board at a planning meeting. (Sure, you could use dry erase markers or a smart board but this post is about STICKIES!)
  8. Unique reminders: Post-It® notes are great for reminders. Put them on your mirror for first thing in the morning or on the dashboard of your car. You’ll never pull out leaving your lunch behind again.

What others uses for sticky notes can you think of?

You Have Got To See My New In-Home Office!

For a few years, now, I have been obsessing over gorgeous in-home offices. When you work from home 90% of the time, it is nice to have pleasant surroundings. I shared some of those great finds with you in 20 Stunning Home Office Ideas and Blogging Moms – This Is The Perfect Time To Give Your Office A New Look.

You may remember that several years ago we did a big re-do in our home. The most monumental improvement was that we took down the wall between the dining room and kitchen and put in a peninsula counter. On either side of the counter, the windows were replaced with French doors leading out to a new deck. The change was huge, welcome and labor-intensive.

After that phase of our project was complete, I wrote about what to do to organize for that kind of change with before and after pictures. You can see our beautified kitchen here⇒ How To Prepare To Remodel Your Kitchen

But there are limitations to what can be done at one time so, for a number of years since, I have worked at the kitchen table as my in-door office (The deck and front porch are my outdoor offices. Blogging is such a great job!) While we took a break,  I was planning and dreaming.

Take a look at the corner where the “desk” was destined to go. Some “desk” huh? Actually, it was just a holding place for my laptop when it wasn’t on the kitchen table or counter. The little folding table now is my portable desk when I work on the front porch – so it serves a purpose, even today. I now keep it folded up and out of the way until time to work outside.
Back to my “waiting period.” I had my eye on the perfect desk and matching corner cabinet from Sauder (no this is NOT a sponsored post.) I just knew it would be perfect.

I measured for it. I imagined it. I spoke to the corners of my kitchen everyday, pointed and said “Desk ↔ Cabinet.” Somday it would be a reality.

Here is what the kitchen office area used to look like:

Another different look at “before” [below] so you really get the picture:

The view of the kitchen from the table is pretty nice. Gives me incentive to keep things neat and clean since I had to look at it a lot.  The laptop is on the counter in this image because I was getting ready to serve dinner and did not have a DESK to put it on.  (Too much stuff on that counter there!)

WAHM

Though the price on the Sauder desk and cabinet combo was very, very reasonable, I had no way to buy them at the time. I prayed that they’d still be there when the finances came in.

One Christmas went by. No desk. No cabinet. No way to get it. Next Christmas came. We spent our gift money on our family and skipped buying for each other. I asked my hubby “When a wave of moolah comes in, can I buy myself a belated Christmas gift with it?” and he very happily said “of course!” The wave came and I went right to my computer to see if Amazon still had them. They DID! I ordered the desk and the corner cabinet – which really is a printer cabinet but perfect for my needs – immediately.

The corner cabinet was important to me as I would be able to clear off the kitchen table. We have baskets of “necessary stuff” (medication, vitamins, mail we don’t want lose, etc) on the table but it doesn’t have to LIVE there. I would rather get baskets in and out of a cabinet so that the table is not cluttered. That method works!
So what do you think of my “after” picture?

We still have a kitchen table there but I wanted you to see the real effect of these two new pieces of furniture without the table in the way.  Side view below.

And now a glimpse from the kitchen – clean counter top, too.

Why is my office in the kitchen? Well, our yellow lab “Sadie” had been injured in a snow storm one year. She had to bound in and out of the high snow drifts to go potty. I did not realize until too late that she had torn a ligament. She sleeps upstairs at night but I did not want to be working in a location in the daytime that forced her to go up and down stairs a lot.

By working in the kitchen she can snooze on the floor next to me and is close to the door to go outside. Sadie is feeling a lot better but we have just added a new puppy “Bailey” to the mix so being near the door is still the best scenerio.

So there you have it. It was well worth waiting for. So, what is your dream office like?

Declutter Your Desk Instantly By Making These 5 Changes

It happens to everybody: in spite of your best efforts to keep your work space neat and organized, eventually you’ll find yourself facing a mess and unable to locate anything. Some might take it as a sign that you’re busy, but in truth such work space clutter will hamper your productivity and reduce your ability to get done what needs to be done in a timely manner.

Quick tips on how to declutter your desk! #tips

These helpful tips should allow you to reduce the amount of clutter on your desk and keep everything looking tidy, allowing you to get everything you need to get done completed on time.

Create a Filing System

For starters, all that loose paperwork needs a place for quick retrieval later. Starting up a filing system will allow you to instantly access important paperwork because you’ll know exactly where it is. How you organize this filing system would be based on the needs of your specific job. If you frequently need to refer to specific document types but don’t remember the titles well, then a category based system would work best. This way you can remember approximately where it is before you start scrounging the desk. If you frequently find yourself needing to pull specific documents, then an alphabetical system is ideal. You might also experiment with other systems as well – the point is to make sure that when you need something, you know exactly where you put it.

Inboxes and Outboxes

Keeping a stack of paperwork you have to fill out, complete, or otherwise demands your attention, is a good way to serve as a reminder that there is work left to do. Having an outbox of completed documentation you need to send off also serves as a reminder of how much you have done already and allows you to quickly retrieve requested documentation that needs to be turned in. Be sure to keep the most time sensitive documents at the top of the stack and set aside a certain time each day or week to tackle your inbox in order to make the most of your time and focus.

Create a To-Do List

Rather than simply depend on your memory, only to have it fail and leave you frantically comparing due dates to figure out what needs to be done first, keep a to-do list of tasks that need to be completed somewhere visible on your desk. This could be in the form of a physical notepad or set up on your Outlook or other office applications – even using Microsoft Notepad as a ‘to-do’ list can serve to keep yourself organized and productive. This can also help to save space by preventing all of your urgent work stacking up out in the open lest you forget that they need to be done.

Electronic Documents Storage

The viability of creating an electronic storage system (if it’s not already available) will largely depend on workplace policies and procedures and how well networked the office actually is. While such storage systems require their own system of organization to allow for easy access, it can be very effective for keeping your desk clutter free. Recommending that important paperwork be e-mailed to you will help to save time that would normally have to be spent scanning the documentation in. If you’re in a position to do so, invest in servers where all important documents, memos, paperwork, and work assignments can be stored. There are also cloud storage systems like Dropbox and Google Drive that are also very useful if a server isn’t an option. Such a measure will pay off in the long run by saving time on having to run documentation from one place to another by hand or running off copies on a sometimes faulty office copier.

Electronic Fax

Related to the above, an electronic fax can save a lot of space by obviating the need for a large, archaic fax machine on an office desk. Electronic faxing services allow you to fax information as easily as sending an e-mail. Employing such a service is essential for situations where you have a PDF copy of a document that needs to be sent, but the receiving party requires a hard copy for whatever reason. Using an electronic fax system saves you time by no longer requiring you to print out the document and then send the fax… or wait in line if it happens to be a busy office fax.

Declutter your desk almost instantly with these 5 tips #tips #organizing Share on X

By taking a little time to organize, and following this basic advice, you can save space and, in the long run, save hours of time that would normally be spent hunting down documents in a cluttered desk or picking up paperwork that got accidentally scattered or waiting on unnecessary print jobs. For those in management positions – encouraging these practices will also help to improve workplace efficiency and productivity in the long run.
