7 Best Accessories For Those Who Write All Day Long

Do you know someone who sits at a computer all day long?  Maybe it is you!  Perhaps you are a blogger or maybe you are a virtual assistant, freelance writer, or a graphic designer. There are so many careers that require sitting at a computer, either at the office or working from home. For sure, writers sit at their computers for many hours at a time.

Great gifts for people who write all day long #tips #giftideas

Working from home can be a dream come true but any profession that requires sitting for 8 to 10 to 12 hours a day, or more, has its health hazards.  Sitting in one position for too long is a strain on your frame. It cuts the circulation.  If you work long hours at a computer, you need a strategy for getting up and changing your position regularly.

Best Accessories For Writers

As a blogger, I sometimes work at a desk, sometimes at the kitchen counter or at a table outdoors on the deck. Then, in the evening, I move to the family room where I can work on my laptop so that the whole family can be together. Those evening hours are often used to schedule social media shares. It is less work but, again, I am sitting! It has been recognized that standing, while you are working at a computer, is an excellent alternative. You can stand some of the day and sit at other times.

So here are some gadgets that I found to help minimize the toll that a writing career can take on you. These accessories can make a world of difference to your overall health and vitality…

7 Best Accessories To Help Those Who Work At Computers All Day Long

Standing Desk – neither sitting nor standing for hours on end is good. The healthy trend is to include adjustable standing desks in the office and at home. My brother purchased one for each of the designers in his company, so I have seen them in action. They can be installed right on your existing desk. It is a breeze to adjust the height so that you can stand for a while and then sit down again. What a great invention!

Anti Fatigue Standing Mat – whether you have decided to step into “standing desk world” – or are doing what I do which is to clear a section of the kitchen counter where I set up my laptop – you need to cushion those feet! My kids bought me a pad to stand on in my kitchen and it really reduces the shock to my hips, knees, ankles and feet. I always use it when I write at the counter. I also use it when I am standing at the counter to cook. (Note: wearing great athletic shoes and socks helps, too. Wear anything that can provide comfort, support and reduce shock.)

Ergonomic Mouse – they are scientifically designed mouses (mice?) that allow for easy motion and reduced stress.

Laptop Pad – for those who like to work while sitting on the sofa or lounging in bed, a laptop pad or couch table is a great help. Laptop pads shield your legs from the heat of the laptop, are anti-slip and many styles include a mouse pad tray. I just bought the Max Smart Laptop Pad after a couple of silly years of using a cardboard beverage tray from the local fast food restaurant to keep the laptop off of my lap. Oh my goodness, what a joy to have this pad!

Office Foot Rest – Take some of the strain off your hips and legs by using an ergonomic foot rest while you sit at your desk.

Keyboard and Mouse Wrist Rests – prevent fatigue and damage to your hands, wrists and arms as you work long hours at the computer by using specially designed rests. They are not expensive, as things go, and the benefits will save you a world of hurt

Comfortable Desk Chair – if your desk chair is uncomfortable, it is time to invest in a new one. There are many ergonomic designs. I was fortunate enough to try a new chair at the design company where I work that is perfect for me. Though this chair was not described as “ergonomic,”  I can sit at my desk for hours and feel great.

So I bought one for my home office=>☑️ see my FAVORITE desk chair ever!

Top 10 Ways To Be More Productive

What is “productivity” anyway? Simply put, productivity is getting more done in less time. For those of us who are way over-booked, finding a little free time would be lovely. Am I right? So, let’s talk about some simple ways get some.

blogging tips, WAHM, time saving, planning, scheduling, success tips
1. Plan Your Day the Night Before. Before you go to bed, make sure to sit down with your planner or calendar and write a to-do list with tasks for the next day. Identify three things: the goals you want to achieve, the tasks you need to finish and how much time it will take to do each thing. This works for two reasons. First,  now that you wrote it down you can stop thinking about it and get a good night’s sleep. Second, when you wake up in the morning you will be ready to go – no floundering around wondering where to start!

2. Find The Right Planning System For You.  It doesn’t matter whether you use a notebook or a mobile app to keep on track. Find a system that fits your style. If you are all about technology, Google calendar is a simple FREE app you can use from your computer and on your phone.
My mom had a simple method. She used sticky notes on the bathroom mirror! Mom was a major league organizer and it worked for her. You just don’t mess with success!
Many of us do very well with a planner:
  • Planners for Women
  • Planners for Men
  • Planners for Teens
3. Know Your Internal Time Clock. What time of day do you operate best? Early morning just as the sun rises? Later at night, when the kids have gone to bed? Make best use of the time of day that finds you more focused and energetic. Save the “mindless” work for times that your energy levels may be running low.

4. Set Priorities. Let’s say you are more productive in the morning. Do you get up and spend an hour checking email? That may not be the best use of your time. Change it up. Identify the most important jobs to get done first. (Remember, you will be planning all of this the night before.)
What accomplishments will make the biggest impact on the success of your day? Focus on those tasks during high-productivity time.
5. Set Goals and Milestones. Goals keep us motivated. Goals
give your work meaning and purpose. A milestone is simply a
mini-goal.
Milestones mark the path along the way.
Example: let’s say you are writing a book. Some milestones might be to finish the outline and then finish the first draft. Next, edit the book. Milestones are like road-markers. They help keep motivation high. You have reached the goal when the whole book is written.

6. Be On The Lookout For Disruptions. The biggest productivity busters are those sneaky interruptions. You know, when the phone rings, your child knocks on the office door, or you glance at Facebook in the middle of a project. Ugh. Got to love them but so much time can be lost! Just be aware.
Top 10 ways to be more productive and FREE up your time! #tips #success

Guard your time. Hang up a “do not disturb“ sign. If you are writing online, sign out.  Write in notebook or a Word document, uninterrupted, first. That’s right, leave the internet and WRITE! When it is ready to go, sign back on, copy and paste it into your blog or web page and do your formatting. One of my friends is a very successful, high-earning blogger.  She sets apart half a day every week to simply write. No internet. No distractions. It works!
A trick to help #bloggers to be more productive - go offline! #tips #bloggingtips #success Share on X
7. Set a Timer. Using the timer will help you to stay on schedule. A food timer is a better because you can turn OFF your phone! No distractions, remember? If you must complete your work by a certain time, setting a timer will help you to relax and stay in tune with the task at hand. Set it with a little “wiggle room” after it rings so that you are not rushing to your next appointment.
8. Keep a Pen and a Notebook By Your Side. If you are one of those people who always has ideas coming, instead of getting distracted by that new idea, jot it down in your notebook. This also works well when you remember something that you want to do or must do. Just jot it down on the paper and get back to the task at hand.
9. Schedule Administrative Tasks for Down-Time. Just as there is a more productive time of day, there is also a low-energy time when it is harder to stay motivated. That time of day is perfect for administrative tasks. For many, it is the afternoon. Catch up on paperwork. Set up your list for the next day. Next? Leave it. Put your work aside and spend quality time with family and friends.
10. Skip “Perfect!”  “Perfect” isn’t real and perfectionism has robbed many a talented person of their productivity. You can get so hyper-focused on making every detail “just so” that the day will run away from you. Get a lot done and go back later to fine-tune.
Reaching goals and milestones feels great and that free-time you are about to come up with is even better! My best advice – savor each moment.
As for me? I am about to take one of those free-time moments – pour myself a great cup of coffee and stare out the window at a beautiful blue sky!

Congratulate us – We Just Hatched A Blog!

Ducks 'n a Row blog has a new look

This has been a long 12 days…but our blog is back!

The story begins with me being so overwhelmed by a string of health crises my husband has been going through. That is what inspired me to write the recent post “Ways To Streamline Your Responsibilities In The Midst Of A Crisis” In an ongoing crisis you learn to ditch activities that wear you out and lay aside the ones that are optional.

Truly, it feels as if we have gone to the Emergency Room at least once a week this summer. That may be an exaggeration but we have been there a lot!
In fact, one of the wonderful security guards at the hospital handed me a wad of free parking passes so that I could come and go without concern about paying to park my car. It can get expensive. What a blessing!

So, in all of the turmoil. I forgot to renew my domain name for my blog (a domain name is the Ducks ‘n a Row address that gets you here!) I was 2 days late. They happily renewed me but I guess it must have started the process over like it was brand new. When they renewed it, my blog could no longer find the internet.

Instantaneously the LIGHTS WENT OUT at Ducks ‘n a Row.

The domain name holders believed they were innocent of doing any harm. The experts in the Blogger forum took a look and said “no, it’s not Blogger, it is the domain holder for sure.”  And with all the advice that came my way, I was unable to fix the problem.

When you earn a living blogging, absence from an online presence for a length of time equals lost income and sharply declining stats. Sponsors look at statistics so it is important to keep those traffic numbers up. Zero is BAD!

I had no choice. It was finally time to move to Word Press. I had heard that WP is a big blessing but it was a scary unknown world to me.

Sometimes the things that are best for us are the very things we have been trying to avoid. That being said … I hired a design company – Five J’s Design – who had done a phenomenal job for some bloggers that I admire. With Joy’s help, and an abundance of wise advice from my blogging buddy, Marilyn from Marilyn’s Treats, I made my way through to victory. Ducks ‘n a Row is BACK!

Hey, Ducks 'n a Row blog is back and with a new look! #momblogger Share on X

As when any little baby is born …. a duckling or a “bloggling” … it looks a little messy. Know that I am working out the kinks …. there is a learning curve for sure. Actually, it is a fun adventure. But it feels so good to be back. REALLY good!

Of course,  we host the weekly Happiness is Homemade Link Party. If you are a blog hopper, be sure to come on by!

Tuesday there will be an awesome Cheese Spread Recipe on the blog. (It is 100% low carb, for those who care about carbs, and delicious for everybody. I received a batch as a Christmas gift from the parents of one of my students and soon as I tried it I had to have the recipe. It’s that good:)

And Tuesday evening at 7pm ET the Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop begins.

So stop by and see the new design, visit a few posts and even share some? Let others know that we are back in business.

Oh yes, and you have to stop by the “Organizing” tab at the top of the page. One of my very first posts with a video of me explaining the premise of Ducks ‘n a Row is there. I had totally forgotten about that post and video. I’m actually glad it turned up. It’s good to revisit the vision from time to time.

BTW, I missed you!

Enjoy!

Note: this author is an Amazon affiliate. What does that mean? Well, anything that you buy from Amazon by first clicking on an ad, link or using an Amazon search window on Ducks ‘n a Row will, at no extra cost to you, result in a small commission for me. In advance “thank you!” … Sinea

Best Sizes To Use For Images On Social Media

Are you as frustrated as I am concerning what the dimensions of images should really be when posting on social media? We all want our work to look great but do we really have to create 4-6 different sizes to have them look awesome everywhere? Maybe we do.

blogging tips
⇑ Nice size for Pinterest ⇑
600 x 859
 ⇒ PIN IT HERE ⇐

Though that may be “best practice”  I am looking for some shortcuts.  What I have settled for is creating a Pinterest friendly image that is much taller than wide and then a Twitter friendly one that is wider than it is high and, well, smaller. Ugh. That sentence makes no sense at all, does it! To put it another way, I use Twitter and Pinterest the most so I am catering to them!

Here is a cheat sheet that I made for myself for in-feed images only. Each platform has a whole bunch of ways that images are sized. The dimensions here are for the feed and are the “best practice” choices. Each platform will adjust sizes for you a bit but they all have limitations.

My goal in pulling this information together is to get something in my head that I can hang onto when I am formatting my pictures – hoping to do it well while making it go FASTER!

blogging tips
This one is better for both Twitter and Google+.
500 x 500

Perfect in-feed image sizes for:
Twitter 440 X 220 minimum

Facebook 1200 x 630

Pinterest 600 X 900

Instagram1080 x 1080

Google+ 497 minimum width

How To Increase Your Blog Traffic 3 Ways With Blog Parties

Yes, there are at very least 3 ways you can use blog parties to build up the traffic to your blog. As the host of two major parties myself, and frequent attender of many other blog hops, I know this to be true.

tips, blogging tips, momblog, blog hop, link party

Blog parties are not just for newbies. All bloggers benefit from them. Some busy bloggers have dropped out from “partying” for lack of time but let me tell you that I have seen a recent upsurge of the most popular mom blogs who are now regularly attending my Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop.

They may be stopping by themselves or, more likely, they are paying a virtual assistant to do it for them — but, think of it, the VALUE in attending blog hops is big enough for them to pay someone to do it.  Hmmm. Stop one moment and let that sink in. Blog parties should be part of your plan.

.

..

This blog contains Amazon affiliate links.

.

.

..

..

Now, here are 3 ways that participating in blog hops / link parties increase your traffic:

1. Sharing your posts is like placing a free advertisement on someone else’s blog. You are guaranteed numerous opportunities for the guests to click on your post at no charge at all. Some parties have multiple hosts, increasing the possibilities of views by that number of participating blogs. The two parties I host have 10 blogs each. Ten times the exposure!

2. Be an active visitor. Actively participating in the parties at VERY LEAST gets you seen by the hosts! “Actively” means that you do not just “post and run.” You interact with others. When you leave a comment on the blog party every week, thanking her for hosting, she gets to know you. I surely remember the ones who comment regularly on mine. Being specific in your comments could get a click from that host, as well. How about saying something like:  “Thanks so much for the great party. Today I shared my recipe for yummy mini pecan pie!”

.

..

Guess what I do as the host? I answer your comment and scan the entries to find “yummy mini pecan pie.” Often, I pin it. If it is a recipe, I yum it, too. If I have extra time, I may even leave a reciprocal comment on your blog post.

.

..

Hosting can be a lonely business. As party hosts, we appreciate YOU appreciating OUR hard work – it takes time to put these parties together every week – and many hosts will show you some extra TLC in return!

Not every party is the same but for Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop the party features are often determined by what posts received the most clicks. In this case, the “tender loving care” click you just got from me gave you a better chance of leading the pack and gaining a feature. Yippee!

As a side note, actively participating by commenting on the blogs of other guests gains notice, as well. “What goes around comes around.” Tell them you just LOVED that cute craft and had to pin it 2 TIMES – or some other encouraging words. They are not obligated but it could get you some “thank you” pins or tweets on your own work as well.

3.Attending blog parties gives you LOTS of material to share. Social media thrives on people sharing each other’s work. Check out the most popular mom-blogger X pages. They retweet constantly. Often, they will post NEW tweets featuring other people’s work, as well.

.

..

You want X to blossom for you? Do not depend on auto shares from Facebook or Instagram to do it. It is OK to use that tool but when people see pages that are exclusively shares from other sources, and nothing else, that says that the blogger doesn’t visit her own Twitter page.

The same principal applies to all social media. Share and, even though that blogger may not reciprocate, you will get to be known as one whose pages are ALIVE with great things happening.

Pinterest is a huge traffic generator but does not work well if the only thing you share is your own work. Look through the blog hops you attend and pick out a few with fabulous images and titles. Visit them and pin them. They will be blessed and so will you. No harm in leaving a comment to let them know what you just did, either. Want MORE exposure at that very same time? Maximize your efforts by setting your pins to post to Twitter and/or Facebook, too!

Do you know that some people will get ♥heart-flutters♥ when they see that YOU, of all people, are now following them? I remember when a couple of super-bloggers started following me – I was soaring with excitement all day long. I couldn’t believe it. What a boost to my confidence!

Do you have any tips on how blog parties help boost traffic flow to your blog? Please share them with us!

Are You A Frustrated Blog Reader? Join the club!

Are you suffering from Blog Reader’s Frustration?
Symptoms: joy of reading your favorite blog diminishes as you go from patient waiting to finger tapping and then verbal outbursts of frustration such as “Oh, come on!” or “I subscribed last time!” And then you click away.

As a blogger I totally understand the desire to keep in touch with readers. We need them! Email lists are very valuable. Social media shares are essential. Paid adverts and sponsored posts our life-blood. I get it. But when does it become too much?
Let me paint you a picture.
I love to blog hop and share other people’s work. I pin, I like, I yum, I stumble. I am very very active online. Not only is it a blessing to me, as I gain new friends and followers, it is a way I  that can help others. I truly look at a means of giving. I love to be a blessing.
All too many times lately have I  gone to an interesting post via a blog party or social media to be met with the following:
Page loads slowly due to extremely large images and lots of plugins.
Just as it looks like I can view the post, a bar floats up from the bottom of the page.
Click.  It doesn’t leave. Click again. OK, it’s gone… I think.
A voice comes out of nowhere.
What’s that?
Oh no, a video spontaneously starts from the sidebar.
It slows up the load even more.
I turn the audio off so I don’t have to listen because I can’t make it stop.
I want to pin that fabulous image but Pinterest can’t find anything “pinnable.”
That appears to be because I need to wait for the pin-it button to show up…or will there be a bunch of buttons floating in from the side?
Yep, there are the floaters. I’ll try that.
“Wow. This is really a great post.”
I think I’ll read it all.
Oh no, as I scroll down to continue reading, a swinging card blocks my view asking me to subscribe to the newsletter.
I don’t want to, I JUST want to read it and pin that unpinnable image.
Wait a minute.
Now that I think of it, I AM subscribed. That’s how I got here.
Will it swing in and ask me every time I come here?
Finally I find a way to pin it. Waiting. Waiting. Pinned!
This really is a great post!
I want to leave a comment.
I have stamina. This post is really good. I must let them know.
No, I AM NOT A ROBOT!!!
I get why I have to prove that but MORE to do before I can leave.
Lest I bore you with more… that what Blog Reader’s Frustration looks like.
So, what is the cure?  I am not 100% sure but I do know this, readers deserve to have a smooth visit. They’ll want to come back if its fun and uncomplicated.
Bloggers, we need to clear the clutter and still get the job done.

Opt-ins that swing in front of our faces are annoying. Floating bars slow processing down. My suggestion is that we all visit our own blogs with new eyes and ask ourselves “If I were a visitor, what would I see?” Then, go on a cleanup operation.
Yes, we need social media buttons. Yes, we need to build our mailing lists. But we also should be good hosts. These readers are our guests. If they do share our work, what a gift! Let’s give them a reason to want to and make it a simple process.
Will I come back to your site if you keep it that way?  Of course I will. You are my friend!  But there will be those days that I won’t have the time to stay and navigate the obstacles. Sorry, on those days you’ll hear “click!”

Have you ever experienced Blog Reader’s Frustration?

How we can do this better?
Ever hear of a condition called Blog Reader’s Frustration? Your readers may have it – do the check up and see!

Yummly – A Food Blogger’s Dream Come True!

Yummly is a dream come true for food bloggers. Whether you exclusively write for a recipe blog or pen the occasional food-related post, each recipe that you share has exponential possibilities when Yummly is in the equation.
food blog, Yummly, recipes, blogging, blog trafic, cooking
First let me tell you, I had been resisting Yummly. Here’s why: as a blogger, I was overwhelmed with so much social media. No room for more. It was exhausting trying to keep up with all of them. So, I had mentally drawn a line. Then, Christina talked to me.
As a regular contributor to Christina’s recipe blog It Is A Keeper, I was looking for my recipes to bring lots of new traffic to Ducks ‘n a Row. It wasn’t happening. Now, I did get that big boost from my Pink Lemonade Pie bonanza, but that was just one post. I was looking for a regular increase in traffic for all the effort I was putting forth writing for another blog.

When I shared my disappointment with Christina, she asked me the big question “Are you on Yummly?”  When I said “no” she strongly encouraged me to give it a try.

Yummly isn’t social media in the sense of what we commonly think. Yummly is a recipe sharing platform. We save the recipes we love. How do we do that? We “Yum” them (i.e. click the Yum button.) The recipes we Yum go right into our own database where we can access them by categories anytime we want them. Here is my Yummly Page: Ducks ‘n a Row on Yummly

Benefit #1 Everyone can take part, not just bloggers. But food bloggers get a huge extra benefit: the great big food-loving world out there will yumming (saving) OUR recipes to their accounts. Traffic!

Quick results? Oh yeah. I kid you not. It took a day. Just one day, for me to realize that Yummly is a powerful source of exposure – and traffic – for our recipes. Every day since that wonderful first day I have had an additional 100 – 500 new views straight from Yummly. And I am not even officially a Yummly publisher yet.

Benefit #2 Yummly regularly shares awesome recipes from their publishers – that could be you or me!– on their own social media. Yummly is on Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, YouTube and Pinterest. Yummly is VERY POPULAR on social media – wait till you see how many followers they have!
So, let me share with you a brief rundown of how it works for bloggers.
  • Sign up for your free account. It is quick and easy.
  • Start yumming recipes that you like wherever you see them.
  • Add a YUM button to your blog for people to YUM your recipes. Make it available with every recipe post. You can either add it manually to each post or you can add it through Shareaholic or a similar app.  How To Add A Yum Button
So stop by Yummly and enjoy the fun of using it for yourself and getting your recipes shared. You will see results. “Get ready, get set, YUM!”
Ever hear of Yummly? Food bloggers LOVE Yummly and here's why. #bloggingtips Share on X
Note: the three recipes in the image above are mine and they would ♥ to be Yummed! Hint hint! So, after you set up your account, come back here and practice by Yumming them – or any of my other recipes. Thanks!
