Amazing Little Air Plants – Easy Guide On How To Grow Them

How did I first discover air plants?  Well, it sure wasn’t because I was a gardening genius. Actually, this is how it happened.

Amazing little air plants for home and office decor!

I was browsing through the handmade section of Amazon to see what was new and there it was. A beautiful, handmade wooden knot with a mini-plant growing out of it.  There was no way that it could be real. Something so tiny was growing in a space that could not possibly hold soil. You could not tuck a vile of water in it, either. Was it a fake plant?  No, it was a real, live plant. They call it an “Air Plant.”

What is an Air Plant?

Air plant?  Oh, this adorable little evergreen, officially named Tillandsia, is a wonder. It does not need soil or a pool of water. It actually is nourished by the air and captures moisture through its leaves. The little plants thrive with misting. Larger ones like a weekly soaking, too.

Offidix Plant Misters – choose your favorite color! #Ad

What I really love about these little gems is that, unlike most plants,  their growth takes place while you are sleeping!  These healthy helpers create and expel oxygen at night [i.e. photosynthesis after the sun goes down.] so go ahead and put some in your bedroom!

Not only do air plants not need soil, they won’t grow in soil. Instead, they attach themselves to other plants, rocks, tree trunks or shrubs. That is why they grow well in tiny wooden vases, glass terrariums or even attached to a decorative piece of drift wood. The possibilities are endless. I saw one growing in a little sconce seashell!

Where To Buy Air Plants

There are a number of air plant vendors that you can find online. One of the most popular is the Air Plant Shop and you can find their store right on Amazon>>  The Air Plant Shop.  Another is >> Shop Succulents Store   A third is a store called >>  Bliss Gardens.

How To Grow Air Plants

This is the fun and easier-than-ever part!  Follow the supplier’s directions exactly but, most probably, you will need to soak your air plant in water for a short while. They need natural sunlight and a watering every week or two depending on the variety.*

[*Be sure to carefully read the instructions that come with your order as directions for care will vary depending on the variety.]

Steps to watering air plants:

  • Submerge your plants in water so that it covers each plant.
  • Let them soak for 30 minutes.
  • Gently remove and shake the water off.
  • Place them in their “home.”
  • Mist on occasion in between.

Air plants are epiphytes, which means that they grow on other plants [not in soil.] Place them in glass globes, on driftwood, in an empty wooden cupholder, in a seashell … there are so many possibilities. Use your imagination!

How To Beautify Your Kitchen Counter

What is there about kitchen counters that attracts clutter so easily? I hate it but am so guilty of letting it happen. Well, no more! Tonight I totally cleared off my peninsula kitchen counter and decorated it with a simple centerpiece plus a decorative notepad on a stand.

How to simplify your kitchen decor #organizing #tips #homedecor

So, this is how I beautified my kitchen counter:

  1. First, I took 15 minutes to throw away the stuff, like junk mail or food wrappers, that had collected there.
  2. Next, I put away the items that belonged somewhere:- in drawers, cupboards and rooms other than the kitchen.
  3. Finally, I cleaned and shined the counter top.

Simplify your kitchen counter decor #tips

It was time to decorate. I had a clear glass plate left over from the holidays that made a simple tray for my trio of flicker candles.  They needed something to add a little “pizzazz” so I grabbed three sparkly red pine cones from a different decoration and put them around the candles. They look really nice, especially with the candles turned on.

I could have kept it to just the centerpiece, as centerpieces do discourage clutter from collecting.  I chose to add one more piece as I always want a notebook at hand to jot down reminders and create my next grocery list. This one has a cover that I like to look at so I put it on a stand as a display. So my kitchen counter has two clutter deterrents!

Four Ways To Keep Your Pumpkins Fresh

Keep your pumpkin decorations fresh longer – four techniques!
pumpkins, household tips, decorating

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

Pumpkins make such pretty autumn decorations. I love them in groupings on the front porch or even as a fall centerpiece on a long table. Whether you carve them or keep them intact, you are racing against time. Soon, your decorations will decay and the beauty will be lost. It is inevitable. But you can move “sooner” to “later” if you plan ahead!

Here are some household hints to help you get longer life out of your pumpkins…

– Spray with lemon juice.
After you’ve carved your pumpkin, spray inside and out. Repeat every couple of days to increase longevity.

– Treat with a bleach solution.
Combine 1 T bleach with 1 quart of water. Pour into a squirt bottle. Wipe the pumpkin clean and then spray with the solution. Allow to dry.

– Refrigerate them.
Bring your pumpkins in at night and keep in a cool place. A cold garage is a perfect location or, if they are small enough, even in the refrigerator.

– Carve from the back, not the top.
Typically, people cut the top off their pumpkin to make a lid. Try cutting a hole in the back, instead. The top is strongest part of the pumpkin and will keep it in shape longer if it is not dislodged.

How To Transform The Look Of Your Patio Or Deck

Patios and decks are like rooms without ceilings that we live in when the weather is nice. If you are a person who virtually stays outdoors from sunup to sundown,  it would make sense to surround yourself with the decor you love. Add a bistro table, some throw pillows and planters and you will have a whole new look to enjoy throughout this spring and summer season!

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

Woman standing barefoot on a garden walk

I fell in love with bistro tables when I saw my friend’s cozy little garden path. She installed some stepping stones, making a winding walkway under some trees at the side of her house. Next, she added a lovely bistro table with chairs and some large pots with flowers in them. It makes such a beautiful scene. She and her children have tea parties under the trees in their little garden hideaway.

Whether you are creating a garden area with an outdoor dining table or a bench or adding furnishings to the look of your patio / deck, a little bit goes a long way.

Bistro tables are quaint little tables like you might find in a bistro restaurant. You can fit small cups or beverage glasses and a plate or two on them – not much more. If you are all about feasting, you will want a few of them clustered together or you may want to move up to a full sized table.

Floral bistro-style side table #patio #furnitureNow, when it comes to setting a scene for smaller children to enjoy, a pretty bistro style side table is shorter could be perfect for joining the grownups. This floral side table is so pretty, it is the one I would pick! It is only 15 inches high, compared to the 22 – 26 inches of most bistro tables. There are several designs to choose from, too.

If you wish to accommodate more than two or three people but still want the bistro look, consider using more than one table. They can be grouped or positioned at corners of the deck or patio. The nice thing about them is that they tend to be relatively light weight so they are easily moved.

How To Make A Pretty Burlap And Lace Tray

This is not a sponsored post. I did, however, receive the burlap  and ribbon used in making this craft for free from Burlap Fabric. The opinions in this post are 100% my own.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

How to make a burlap and lace tray #DIY

Burlap is very popular for home decor, crafts, and even wedding and bridal shower decorations. The rustic look is in and I love it!

Take a look at this pretty burlap and lace tray. I made it using an old picture frame that I had stashed away in a closet.  I have admired so many awesome burlap craft projects online and really wanted to make one myself.  So, I decided to freshen up the look of my dining room table by making a centerpiece tray. It was so simple to do.  Let me show you how.

Simple supplies to make a beautiful burlap and lace tray #crafts

How To Make A Pretty Burlap & Lace Tray

Supplies

Picture Frame

Burlap Sheet

Crochet Lace Ribbon

Fabric Glue

Scissors

Directions

Remove the backing from the picture frame.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

Next, you will come to a cardboard insert. Remove it and save it. The cardboard will be the base you will glue the burlap onto.

Lay a piece of burlap* out on the table.

*I used a piece that is about the size of the whole frame 12″ x 16″. I got a selection of pre-cut pieces in assorted colors from Burlap Fabric. I love it that I now have a supply that can be used for other projects. This tray looks so pretty that I may make another one with light blue burlap and an ivory colored frame. It will look great on my dresser.

Assorted colors of burlap #crafts #supplies

Using a crayon or piece of chalk, draw a light outline of the cardboard insert onto the burlap.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

Cut 4 pieces of ribbon just a bit longer than each side of the drawn rectangle.

Starting with the two short sides, squirt fabric glue along each side near your crayon line and gently press the ribbon onto the glue.

Do the same for the longer side, overlapping the ends of the short sides.

Your ribbon has now formed a rectangular frame on the burlap. Allow the glue to dry for about 30 minutes.

Now, squirt narrow lines of fabric glue on one side of the cardboard.

Gently lay the burlap onto it and press it on with a flat hand.

Allow the glue to dry another 30 minutes.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

After the glue is dry, trim off the excess burlap on the edge of the cardboard.

Tip: leave at least 1/2 inch of fabric over the edge of the cardboard. It will tuck inside the frame nicely.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #crafts

Insert the burlap/lace covered cardboard into the picture frame so that the finished side is against the glass.

If your picture frame has supports for holding the picture inside the frame, put them in place.

Ideally, the outer back of the frame should be put back on but I was unable to do it.  The frame was so well made that I could not remove the stand that was attached to get the frame to stand up. Since I wanted my tray to lie flat on the table, I left that backing off. It worked very well.  Finally, I put it in the middle of my dining room table with a floral arrangement and candle on it.
