10 Little Things To Replace Before You Really Need Them

How many times have you had a situation arise when essential household items were needed but, alas, those items were nowhere to be found?

Keep essential household items in stock so you are never caught short #tips

Recently I purchased some much-needed table lamps for my home. The old ones were falling apart from age and new ones were long overdue. As I ordered them, I was so sure I had light bulbs on hand I really didn’t give it a thought.

The day my pretty lamps arrived I unboxed them carefully and went to get some light bulbs to light them up but light bulbs were NOT THERE! Ugh. We were completely out and the old lamps took a higher wattage than the new ones would so I couldn’t use those bulbs, either. So, off to the store I went.
That got me thinking. There are many essential household items that we use from time to time but don’t go through them fast enough for them to be routine purchases. They are the ones – like my light bulbs – that can often not  be there when we need them.

Keep a supply of birthday candles on hand!

So, do the obvious and plan ahead. Put them on your shopping list now and get them back into the house. If you cannot afford to buy them all at the same time, no worries. Just keep a list within reach and add them to your shopping plan, one or two at a time, until you have them all. These 10 items are by no means everything that fits the description but they are a great start!

10 Little Things To Replace Before You Really Need Them

  1. Bandaids – boo boos happen. Keep an assortment of the most popular sizes in stock for paper cuts, scraped knees and other little injuries.
  2. Batteries – I never thought I would see the day I would need AAA size batteries, but I do. Those tiny little houses of power run my new TV remote and my flicker candles. Now I keep a supply in stock along with the standard AA, 9-volts, C’s and D’s. Smoke detectors take 9-volts, you know.
  3. Birthday Candles – really? Seems like we should know when to replenish the supply. We all have calendars! But there have been times in my own home, and when visiting others, where we had the cake with the birthday girl (or boy) patiently waiting on the other side but no birthday candles could be found. Keep them in supply and remember where you put them. LOL! (PS. When celebrating birthdays at other people’s houses, be a “friend-indeed.” Quietly bring a box along in your purse in case of emergency!)
  4. Checks – more and more people are paying bills online. When you do have to write a check, though, will you have any? Order a supply now.
  5. Fasteners & Tape– I wasn’t sure what to call these. All I know is that they matter. What I am thinking of is paper clips, safety pins, staples for your stapler, thumb tacks, rubber bands and tape. All are used to fasten things. All are so helpful when you have them and it can be a problem when you don’t. I’ve used bobbi pins for paper clips and it just isn’t the same. [Should we add bobbi pins to this list, too? Paper clips don’t work well for hair, either!]  When it comes to tape, PACKING TAPE is the item I used to regret not keeping in the house.  I learned my lesson and always have a roll on hand, now.
  6. Furnace Filters – granted, this is not one of those cheaper purchases but it does fall into the “not often purchased” category. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a new one on hand when you need it?  Today was a first for me. I actually had a new filter on hand. Felt great!
  7. Light Bulbs – we’ve already talked about this one but I might add that having the more obscure bulbs available is really nice. I am talking of outdoor floodlight bulbs, appliance bulbs and novelty bulbs. Again, you can do this piece by piece instead of making one big purchase but that’s what your list is for. Buy them and check them off as you do.
  8. Matches / Lighter– back to the birthday party. You found the birthday candles and now how do you light them? These days it is very possible to have a party without a smoker in the group (yipee!) Keep some matches or a multipurpose lighter in the house.
  9. Postage Stamps – people don’t use the postal service nearly as much as they used to but when you do have a greeting card to mail or a bill to pay, isn’t it annoying to have to wait to buy a stamp? Keep a supply in your home along with envelopes.
  10. Razor Blade Scraper – if you haven’t painted a window lately, this little tool may not be on the radar. I need one about every two years when the registration on my car is up. Soak the old sticker on the windshield with some window cleaner and use a razor blade to get it off – or not. I’ve learned to keep one of these babies on hand for times of need!

Organize – 5 Quick Steps To Take Control!

Can’t find a place for your stuff? Can’t find your stuff? If you feel like the room is shrinking as it’s filling up with more things, then it’s time to get a grip on the situation.

home, mom, cleaning, organizing, minimalism
There are five easy steps you can take that will make you look like an “organizing genius” to those around you! They’ll wonder how ever do you do it.
Before the steps, though, let’s recognize a fundamental truth: clutter cannot be organized. You may try to control it but clutter will take over every time! Changing its location doesn’t help, either. Why? Because clutter is still clutter no matter where it’s kept. So don’t wear yourself out! Just make up your mind that you’re done with harboring excess stuff forever!

Step 1: Clear a Space. Make a bold statement by clearing a “hot spot” first. This is the location where clutter is king! It builds up, defying you to do anything about it. In the home, in may be the kitchen counter or a table that gets all the stuff. In an office, your desktop will be the likely place to begin. Clearing it will declare “I’m not putting up with this anymore. Things have changed.”  After it is clear, put a centerpiece there that quietly makes a statement “do NOT put your junk here!”
How to do it: Collect all the stuff in a laundry basket or box and take it to the various locations where it belongs. If some of it needs to just go away, you know where the garbage can is. Don’t think about letting it lie around. Throw it out, now!
After the table is cleared, shine it up real nice and put something on it that defies others to add anything new. A vase of flowers, basket of fruit or a nice new picture frame will do. No one will want to be the first one to mess it up!
Step 2: Use a timer! Decluttering — and organizing — can become an endless process if you don’t draw a line. The most effective way to do this is to use a kitchen timer. The goal here is to pace yourself for the long haul. You are organizing more than your surroundings–you are embarking on a new organized-life. To do that, establish a habit of doing a little bit every day. Using a timer will help you to stick with the plan.
How to do it: Set your timer for 15-20 minutes. Clean that room with a box, a bag and a plan.
  • The Box: The box is for items that will go straight to your car: destination Good Will or the Salvation Army.
  • The Bag: The bag is a trash bag. Everything being thrown away goes into the bag and out to the garbage can.
  • The Plan: Plan on not keeping much but do know where you’ll put the items that you are keeping. When the timer sounds, STOP. Pick up the project where you left off again tomorrow.
“Fundamental truth: clutter cannot be organized!”

Step 3: DECLUTTER! You have to declutter before organizing can take place. So, put it away, give it away or TOSS IT. But don’t keep moving it around.
Your new motto should be: “One in, two out!” What does that mean? For every new thing that comes in the door, two existing items have to leave.
You can give them away or throw them away but never allow more to come in than what goes out. That’s how clutter got there in the first place.
Step 4: Start a Routine. Some of the chaos of your life is due to not planning ahead. Preparation can make a big difference in living an organized life. You’ll need an evening routine, a morning routine and even a weekend routine.
If this is foreign to you, just start with an evening routine. This should be more than just brushing your teeth and going to bed. Get tomorrow ready, today. Until it becomes a habit, make a list of what you will prepare before retiring for the night.:
  • Clothes selected, clean, pressed and gathered into one convenient location.
  • Lunches made?
  • Car keys, eye glasses, wallet or purse. No more hunting around trying to find them.
  • Have pets? Get their food set up for tomorrow. If you walk the dog, get the leash, poop bags and your outdoor clothes together tonight.
  • Special stops on the way? What will you need? Bank deposit prepared. Child’s homework in the book bag. Do you have enough gas in the car? Allow extra time if you’re going to have to stop. Don’t let details slow you up. Preparing the night before will keep things stress free and on time!
Step 5: Make a List. Relying on your memory to get everything done on time will only go so far. Busy people have a lot on their minds. Soon things will start falling through the cracks.
Whether you use a planner, electronic organizing app, calendar or a piece of paper, lists will keep you on time, in order and efficient!
Working on a project? Use achecklist to track progress and stay on task.
To sum it up, being a brilliant organizer does not require that you become obsessive about it – just be aware and determined! Your new mindset is to steadily dig out from under the mess and come up smiling!

How To Organize A Dresser

Organize your dresser drawers! #organize

Make An Organizing Plan

Before you dig into this dresser drawer organizing project, consider your surroundings. Are you sharing your dresser with somebody else? If so, which drawers are closer to his side of the bed and which are closer to yours? Assign drawers accordingly.
Top: Fill the top drawers with items you use most often, such as socks and undergarments. Why reach to a bottom drawer more than you have to?
Middle: Drawers halfway down can hold tops that you frequently wear.
Bottom: Use lower drawers for items that are for special occasions and not everyday such as dressy tops and sweaters.

How To Organize A Dresser Step-By-Step

  • Make A Work Space: Use your bed as a work-space You’ll want it to be flat so either make the bed or take the sheets and blankets off. Either way, you’ll need a large space on which to put your belongings.
  • Move Your Clothes: Remove everything from each drawer and lay it out on the bed. Have a box on hand for clothes in that won’t be sticking around. You can take it right to the car when you’re finished, ready to donate to Good Will.
  • You also may find that some things need laundered, especially if they have acquired many wrinkles. Put them in a laundry basket or get them ready to go to the dry cleaners. Be sure to leave space for them to go back in the drawer afterward.
  • Label Your Drawers: Use sticky notes to temporarily label the drawers according to what they will now hold. Remove them soon as the job is done. Love labels? Try permanently labeling your drawers. It can look great when it’s done right.

  • Fold And Put Away: Starting with the top drawers, fold the garments and put them away. Socks should be matched and either knotted together or folded inside one another to prevent them from separating. Fold sweaters and shirts so that they can be removed from the drawer without disturbing the other clothes. Store them side by side.
  • Tip: the key to neatness is in the fold. Check out this excellent video showing you just how to do it!

Tools: drawer dividers do help to keep your drawers organized.

Keep Like-Clothes Together: if socks and under garments will be sharing the same drawer, set up sections. One side will be socks and the other underwear. You may want to color-code them as well, keeping white athletic socks in one area, dark trouser socks in another, etc.
Shirts and sweaters can also be on different sides of the same drawer or in separate drawers.
Tip: if you live in a region with seasonal changes that require a different wardrobe, organize your dresser when it’s time to move from winter to summer clothes, or vice versa.

Declutter Your Desk Instantly By Making These 5 Changes

It happens to everybody: in spite of your best efforts to keep your work space neat and organized, eventually you’ll find yourself facing a mess and unable to locate anything. Some might take it as a sign that you’re busy, but in truth such work space clutter will hamper your productivity and reduce your ability to get done what needs to be done in a timely manner.

Quick tips on how to declutter your desk! #tips

These helpful tips should allow you to reduce the amount of clutter on your desk and keep everything looking tidy, allowing you to get everything you need to get done completed on time.

Create a Filing System

For starters, all that loose paperwork needs a place for quick retrieval later. Starting up a filing system will allow you to instantly access important paperwork because you’ll know exactly where it is. How you organize this filing system would be based on the needs of your specific job. If you frequently need to refer to specific document types but don’t remember the titles well, then a category based system would work best. This way you can remember approximately where it is before you start scrounging the desk. If you frequently find yourself needing to pull specific documents, then an alphabetical system is ideal. You might also experiment with other systems as well – the point is to make sure that when you need something, you know exactly where you put it.

Inboxes and Outboxes

Keeping a stack of paperwork you have to fill out, complete, or otherwise demands your attention, is a good way to serve as a reminder that there is work left to do. Having an outbox of completed documentation you need to send off also serves as a reminder of how much you have done already and allows you to quickly retrieve requested documentation that needs to be turned in. Be sure to keep the most time sensitive documents at the top of the stack and set aside a certain time each day or week to tackle your inbox in order to make the most of your time and focus.

Create a To-Do List

Rather than simply depend on your memory, only to have it fail and leave you frantically comparing due dates to figure out what needs to be done first, keep a to-do list of tasks that need to be completed somewhere visible on your desk. This could be in the form of a physical notepad or set up on your Outlook or other office applications – even using Microsoft Notepad as a ‘to-do’ list can serve to keep yourself organized and productive. This can also help to save space by preventing all of your urgent work stacking up out in the open lest you forget that they need to be done.

Electronic Documents Storage

The viability of creating an electronic storage system (if it’s not already available) will largely depend on workplace policies and procedures and how well networked the office actually is. While such storage systems require their own system of organization to allow for easy access, it can be very effective for keeping your desk clutter free. Recommending that important paperwork be e-mailed to you will help to save time that would normally have to be spent scanning the documentation in. If you’re in a position to do so, invest in servers where all important documents, memos, paperwork, and work assignments can be stored. There are also cloud storage systems like Dropbox and Google Drive that are also very useful if a server isn’t an option. Such a measure will pay off in the long run by saving time on having to run documentation from one place to another by hand or running off copies on a sometimes faulty office copier.

Electronic Fax

Related to the above, an electronic fax can save a lot of space by obviating the need for a large, archaic fax machine on an office desk. Electronic faxing services allow you to fax information as easily as sending an e-mail. Employing such a service is essential for situations where you have a PDF copy of a document that needs to be sent, but the receiving party requires a hard copy for whatever reason. Using an electronic fax system saves you time by no longer requiring you to print out the document and then send the fax… or wait in line if it happens to be a busy office fax.

Declutter your desk almost instantly with these 5 tips #tips #organizing Share on X

By taking a little time to organize, and following this basic advice, you can save space and, in the long run, save hours of time that would normally be spent hunting down documents in a cluttered desk or picking up paperwork that got accidentally scattered or waiting on unnecessary print jobs. For those in management positions – encouraging these practices will also help to improve workplace efficiency and productivity in the long run.

Ridding Your Home of PAPER CLUTTER!

How to get rid of paper clutter

Paper, paper PAPER!!!! Overrun by paper? Yikes! It’s everywhere.
What is the greatest pile of paper that you struggle with?
Coupons ?
Greeting Cards ?
Important Mail ?
Junk Mail ?
Legal Documents ?
Magazines ?
Newspapers ?
Office “paper stuff” ?
Photos ?
Receipts ?
We all will have different cures for the same problem. What do you do with all that unwanted paper? I have come up with some solutions of my own that kind of do the job for me. As they say, “it’s a work in progress.”
This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

Coupons–I’ve given up on them. I only cut the ones I absolutely know I will use. Nothing on speculation. Speculation leads to piles of expired coupons that never get used. The few that I do use are kept in my wallet and “spent” as soon as possible.

Greeting Cards— again, I’m not a saver of cards. I am, however, big on my grandkids’ artwork. Their masterpieces are hung on my office wall. ♥

Important Mail–for me, this would be “bills.” (I now do Publisher’s Clearinghouse paper-free, online.) I have an expanding file to stash my current bills. On “bill paying day” I pull it out along with my checkbook and calculator and get to work!

Junk Mail–the name tells the story. “JUNK” goes in the garbage can before it can land on the counter or table! Do not let it stay! There are services where you can opt out of unwanted catalogs and other junk mail.  Catalog Choice is a good place to start.

Legal Documents: this would include copies of your annual tax returns, wills, title to your car, birth certificates. You might use a safe, filing cabinet or flat file. I love file boxes but, for ultra important paperwork, label it well so that no one mindlessly disposes of it!

Isn’t this pretty?  Black and White Scroll Pattern File Box
Magazines: magazine clutter has been a serious problem in my home. I love magazines and have several subscriptions. Since I don’t have time to “read” them (browse?) soon as they arrive, they pile up.
I have used them for decorating purposes on coffee tables, but then they all have to be moved when I clean the table. So, trays became a solution. They move easily for dusting but trays need to be cleaned, too.

That’s when I made an amazing discovery. I could donate them! My local public library has a “magazine room.” People bring their lightly used magazines in as a donation. Others  read them there or buy them for 5 cents each.  Guilt is gone! I can keep my magazines long as I want, then drop them at the library and let THEM deal with the clutter! What a perfect solution.

Family Photos: putting them in albums is great but what if you have too many pictures and not enough time? Have a photo party! Invite family or friends to join you for some tasty snacks and everyone start sorting. You can set up albums by years, eras, special events (like graduations, weddings, vacations, babies, etc) or subjects.  It make take more than one party but I have found some of the best conversation takes place when you are doing something together. It’s fun!

So, how do you manage YOUR paper clutter?
