Sewing Tip You Will Not Believe!

This sewing tip is called “the Secret of the Red Dot” and, I kid you not, with 50+ years of sewing experience this is the first time I have ever heard it!

Sewing Tip

Have you seen seam ripping tools?  They are hand-held and have a sharp point.  There is also another protrusion with a little red ball … a red dot… on the end.  How many times I have poked holes in the fabric? Ugh, and it could have been so easily avoided.

This blog contains Amazon Affiliate links ♥

Before I say it what the secret is, just watch this quick video where I learned this nifty “best kept secret” tip!

So, here’s the BIG SECRET   if you insert the point that has the red dot, instead of the sharp point, and rip a seam, you will not put holes in the garment!  So simple.  So unknown-ish.  OK, someone out there knows but I sure did not. LOL!

Anybody know what that red dot on your seam ripper is there for? Why did it take me so long to find out??? #sewing #tips #today Share on X

Letter E is for Egg Preschool Craft – super easy to make and FUN!

Letter E is for Egg craft for kids

This marbled egg shaving cream craft is perfect for teaching the Letter E is for Egg to preschoolers – they love it and it is so easy to do! If you aren’t studying the letter E, it can also be a nice compliment to an Easter theme or even B is for Bird or N is for Nest or S is for Spring.

Look at how unique every egg turns out. When you make your eggs, be liberal with your colors but keep them kind of separate. The marbling will be more vivid if you do.

How To Make A Marbled Egg Craft With Shaving Cream

Supplies
Foam shaving cream
Tempera  paint
Cardstock paper
Jelly roll pans or baking sheets
Craft sticks or straw
Straight edge or sturdy sheet of cardboard as a “squeegee”
Paper towel
Baby wipes (for hands)
Towels
Trash bag

beautiful blue multicolored paper egg craft
Directions
  • Cut out eggs.
  • Write names on one side.
  • Spray foamy shaving cream into a pan or on a big plate.
  • Squirt tempera paint in streaks onto the shaving cream.
  • Using a craft stick or straw, squiggle the color through just a little bit.
  • Take the cardstock eggs (name side facing up) and press them into the shaving cream.
  • Gently pull it up (to me it is at its prettiest, before you wipe it off)
  • Wait 1 – 2 minutes to let the color sink in.
  • Squeegee the excess off.
  • Lay it out to dry.

Print the outline of an egg on pieces of cardstock and cut it out.
Count on each of your children wanting to make several – it goes fast.
They wil be fascinated with all the different designs this colored shaving cream produces. For my preschoolers, I cut out at least 3 per child.

Tip 1: have a location with paper towel laid out where they can lie flat to dry.
Tip 2: if you are doing this in a group setting, write the children’s names in pen on the back BEFORE you start! Once they are wet, you are going to have a hard time doing it.
Tip 3: I am all in favor of children getting lots of cutting practice in on a regular basis. For this craft, however, you may prefer to pre-cut them out in advance and then (as I said in tip #2) write their names on the back of each one.

Paddle To The Sea Makes Geography and Art Lessons Fun!

Paddle To The Sea is such a fun way to learn North American geography and so much more. If this is the first you have heard of the classic story, let me tell you just a bit more…

The story, written from the viewpoint of a canoe that was made by a Native American boy, starts up north in Canada. His journey takes Paddle, the little canoe, through wilderness adventures as he travels to the Great Lakes.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

What a great way to teach geography --- a book and some soft air dry clay! #school #art #geography Share on X

Students learn about wildlife native to forests, streams, marshes and ponds. There is much opportunity to expand learning by researching topics described in the tale. Readers can learn about saw mills and the iron milling businesses, to name just two. We found videos about the logging business and iron ore mining that further enrich the learning experience.

Clay canoe made from soft airdry clay #ad

The children in our home-school group made their own soft air-dry clay canoe sculptures while hearing the Paddle to the Sea book read to them. At the end of each session, we broke into small teams using a big map of Canada and the northern part of the USA.

The children located and labeled the various landmarks named in the story (Lake Nipogan and the Apostle Islands, for example.) Then they opened their laptops and found videos about sawmills, iron mining and the fishing industry on the Great Lakes. A multimedia approach to learning makes it so effective and FUN.

Enjoy!

How To Make A Pretty Burlap And Lace Tray

This is not a sponsored post. I did, however, receive the burlap  and ribbon used in making this craft for free from Burlap Fabric. The opinions in this post are 100% my own.

How to make a burlap and lace tray #DIY

Burlap is very popular for home decor, crafts, and even wedding and bridal shower decorations. The rustic look is in and I love it!

Take a look at this pretty burlap and lace tray. I made it using an old picture frame that I had stashed away in a closet.  I have admired so many awesome burlap craft projects online and really wanted to make one myself.  So, I decided to freshen up the look of my dining room table by making a centerpiece tray. It was so simple to do.  Let me show you how.

Simple supplies to make a beautiful burlap and lace tray #crafts

How To Make A Pretty Burlap & Lace Tray

Supplies

Burlap Sheet

Crochet Lace Ribbon

Fabric Glue

Five pack of burlap table runners - perfect for stylish wedding receptions #weddings #ad

Directions

Remove the backing from the picture frame.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

Next, you will come to a cardboard insert. Remove it and save it. The cardboard will be the base you will glue the burlap onto.

Lay a piece of burlap* out on the table.

*I used a piece that is about the size of the whole frame 12″ x 16″. I got a selection of pre-cut pieces in assorted colors from Burlap Fabric. I love it that I now have a supply that can be used for other projects. This tray looks so pretty that I may make another one with light blue burlap and an ivory colored frame. It will look great on my dresser.

Assorted colors of burlap #crafts #supplies

Using a crayon or piece of chalk, draw a light outline of the cardboard insert onto the burlap.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

Cut 4 pieces of ribbon just a bit longer than each side of the drawn rectangle.

Starting with the two short sides, squirt fabric glue along each side near your crayon line and gently press the ribbon onto the glue.

Do the same for the longer side, overlapping the ends of the short sides.

Your ribbon has now formed a rectangular frame on the burlap. Allow the glue to dry for about 30 minutes.

Now, squirt narrow lines of fabric glue on one side of the cardboard.

Gently lay the burlap onto it and press it on with a flat hand.

Allow the glue to dry another 30 minutes.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

After the glue is dry, trim off the excess burlap on the edge of the cardboard.

Tip: leave at least 1/2 inch of fabric over the edge of the cardboard. It will tuck inside the frame nicely.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #crafts

Insert the burlap/lace covered cardboard into the picture frame so that the finished side is against the glass.

If your picture frame has supports for holding the picture inside the frame, put them in place.

Ideally, the outer back of the frame should be put back on but I was unable to do it.  The frame was so well made that I could not remove the stand that was attached to get the frame to stand up. Since I wanted my tray to lie flat on the table, I left that backing off. It worked very well.  Finally, I put it in the middle of my dining room table with a floral arrangement and candle on it.
