Homemade Gifts Make The Best Gifts

Do you need to save money on gift-giving this holiday season? You are not alone. Many folks feel the pinch in their budget for just the necessities of life. Spending even more on holiday gifts is troubling. Buying the kind of gifts you would like to may simply not be possible.  If you need to make a little go a long way, make homemade gifts. Homemade is the best!

Homemade gifts can be the BEST gifts, too! #DIY #giftideas

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

Some of the Best Gifts are Homemade

1. Baked Goods. Do you enjoy baking? If so, then you can easily utilize your baking skills to make inexpensive and delicious gifts for family and friends. Pick one or two items and make huge batches – for instance, a loaf of your special bread or batch of muffins, the cookies you make only at holiday time that everyone raves about, or rich truffles or fudge. Be sure to keep costs down by choosing recipes that don’t require items that are pricey, such nuts or olives.

2. Jarred Recipes Instead of presenting a gift of baked goods, fill a jar with the dry ingredients necessary for your favorite cookie, soup or brownie, print out the recipe on a card, and attach the card around the neck of the jar with ribbon or twine. The recipient can whip up something delicious for themselves after all the holiday goodies are gone.

3. Craft Items. You don’t have to be especially crafty to create a homemade gift. There are plenty of fairly simple crafts that even a novice could handle that would make lovely gifts. The key is to choose something you know you can do and that you also know will not take an excessive amount of time. The craft you choose should also use fairly inexpensive materials. Also, as with the baked goods, choose one or two max and make all the same for everyone on your list.

4. Gift Baskets. This one is so simple and can be very inexpensive if you use your imagination. You can make a gift basket for almost anyone. Movie buff? Fill a basket with a classic or two (these can be purchased for very little – newer movies will cost a lot more), a packet of microwave popcorn, bottle of soda and a box of candy. Spa lover? Use a plush towel to line a basket, then fill it with goodies such as scented candles, massage oil and an eye gel mask. Bear in mind that you aren’t restricted to baskets, either. A box or crate will work just as well – use whatever container is the least expensive.

5. Framed Photos. Dig up an old photo that you think your gift recipient might appreciate and frame it for giving. It may be a picture of the two of you or a picture they have never seen. Consider also personalizing the frame, especially if you purchase an inexpensive wood or plastic frame. You could write or stencil around the framed photo to make it into a keepsake treasure that your friend or family member will enjoy for years.

How To Make A Cute Drawstring Bag for a Baby Gift Basket

Drawstring bags are a simple means of transporting and/or storing things.
Whether they are nesting places for children’s toys or a quick way to get assorted items from “here” to “there,” drawstring bags are easy to make and do come in handy. This particular version is ultra-simple to create as it is sown from a pillowcase.  Some of the sewing has already been done for you, as a result. I made these bags to put in a baby gift basket as “mommy on the go” bags.
How to make a drawstring bag for a baby gift basket and other uses #sewing

Babies, babies, BABIES! Of all celebrations, I love baby showers the most. Our family has five babies right now from newborn to just under the age of 2… and there is a sixth little love on the way… so we have many!

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

For one of our recent baby showers, I decided to make a baby gift basket with “mommy grab ‘n go” bags inside. They were filled with essentials that mom might need when she is out and about with her little ones: diapers, baby wipes, bib, receiving blanket, pacifier and a trash bag to wrap up soiled diapers and wipes while on the road.

The mommy grab ‘n go bags are  easy to make, even for novices.  I decided to buy some vivid blue and white pillow cases to make mine – since the baby was a boy. The wide border at the top of the cases is already a channel for the ribbon or drawstring to run through. Much less work!

Baby gift basket with DIY drawstring mommy grab n go bags

How To Make a Drawstring Bag

Tools you will need: scissors, pins, sewing machine, thread, needle (for hand sewing,) iron (optional), 2 pillow cases, ribbon.

I will walk you through it detail but, in short, here are the steps:

  1. measure the pillowcase for size
  2. cut the pillowcase in half (for two bags, you will have leftover fabric*)
  3. pin each pillowcase in half, lengthwise, inside out.
  4. pin along the bottom
  5. using a sewing machine, sew across the bottom and up one side.
  6. STOP sewing as you get to the channel. DO NOT sew it closed.
  7. finish the edges of the open channel, by hand.
  8. turn the newly sewn bag rightside out.
  9. iron it.
  10. attach a safety pin to one end of the ribbon and feed it through the channel.
  11. remove the safety pin.
  12. fill it with “goodies”
  13. done!
*Notice that I used some of the leftover fabric to make a matching bow for the outside of the gift basket.

You can get two bags out of one pillow case with ease. Since the receiving blanket and multiple diapers would take up the bulk of the room,  I laid them on top of a pillowcase to get a feel for just how big they should be. You may want to do the same, assuming you know what will be stored in yours.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts

Tip: Lay a straight piece of paper on the fabric to use as a guide to cut the bottom of the bag in a straight line.
Cut all the way across the bottom of the pillowcase for the bottom seams of the bags.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
Now, cut each side seam all the way down. You now have TWO separate pieces of fabric, each with a ready-made channel for the top where the ribbons will be run through.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
Fold each bag in half, inside out, with the channels meeting each other. Remember NOT to sew that end shut. It has to be left open, edges finished off by hand, to run the drawstring ribbon through.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
This is what the channel looks like.

DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts

Pin each bag and, using a sewing machine, sew across the bottom and up the side up to, but not including, the channel.
Turn the bag rightside out. Hand-sew the edges of the channel, folding the edges inside the channel, to make a nice neat piece.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
 Iron them.

DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts

The ribbon or cord that you will use for the drawstring should be several inches longer than the channel on each end when the bag is laying out flat. You need substantial ends to be able to pull and tie them. I decided to use a pretty blue ribbon that would be tied in a bow.
Take a safety pin and attach it to the end of your ribbon. Now, thread it through the channel, leaving some of the ribbon hanging on one side and more on the other.
DIY, gift, baby shower gift idea, crafts
Fill the bags with all the goodies!

How To Make A Pretty Burlap And Lace Tray

This is not a sponsored post. I did, however, receive the burlap  and ribbon used in making this craft for free from Burlap Fabric. The opinions in this post are 100% my own.

How to make a burlap and lace tray #DIY

Burlap is very popular for home decor, crafts, and even wedding and bridal shower decorations. The rustic look is in and I love it!

Take a look at this pretty burlap and lace tray. I made it using an old picture frame that I had stashed away in a closet.  I have admired so many awesome burlap craft projects online and really wanted to make one myself.  So, I decided to freshen up the look of my dining room table by making a centerpiece tray. It was so simple to do.  Let me show you how.

Simple supplies to make a beautiful burlap and lace tray #crafts

How To Make A Pretty Burlap & Lace Tray

Supplies

Picture Frame

Burlap Sheet

Crochet Lace Ribbon

Fabric Glue

Scissors

Five pack of burlap table runners - perfect for stylish wedding receptions #weddings #ad

Directions

Remove the backing from the picture frame.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

Next, you will come to a cardboard insert. Remove it and save it. The cardboard will be the base you will glue the burlap onto.

Lay a piece of burlap* out on the table.

*I used a piece that is about the size of the whole frame 12″ x 16″. I got a selection of pre-cut pieces in assorted colors from Burlap Fabric. I love it that I now have a supply that can be used for other projects. This tray looks so pretty that I may make another one with light blue burlap and an ivory colored frame. It will look great on my dresser.

Assorted colors of burlap #crafts #supplies

Using a crayon or piece of chalk, draw a light outline of the cardboard insert onto the burlap.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

Cut 4 pieces of ribbon just a bit longer than each side of the drawn rectangle.

Starting with the two short sides, squirt fabric glue along each side near your crayon line and gently press the ribbon onto the glue.

Do the same for the longer side, overlapping the ends of the short sides.

Your ribbon has now formed a rectangular frame on the burlap. Allow the glue to dry for about 30 minutes.

Now, squirt narrow lines of fabric glue on one side of the cardboard.

Gently lay the burlap onto it and press it on with a flat hand.

Allow the glue to dry another 30 minutes.

How to make a burlap and lace tray from a picture frame #DIY

After the glue is dry, trim off the excess burlap on the edge of the cardboard.

Tip: leave at least 1/2 inch of fabric over the edge of the cardboard. It will tuck inside the frame nicely.

Insert the burlap/lace covered cardboard into the picture frame so that the finished side is against the glass.

If your picture frame has supports for holding the picture inside the frame, put them in place.

Ideally, the outer back of the frame should be put back on but I was unable to do it.  The frame was so well made that I could not remove the stand that was attached to get the frame to stand up. Since I wanted my tray to lie flat on the table, I left that backing off. It worked very well.  Finally, I put it in the middle of my dining room table with a floral arrangement and candle on it.

Tote Bags For Busy Moms

Are you a really busy mom?  Are there days when you feel less like a mom and more like a chauffeur? Kids have full schedules and, most of the time, your are the way they get where they are going.

Depending on the time of year, many moms could literally be on the road and away from home all day long. If they forget something, there is no time to turn back and get it. It is essential to pack strategically so that they have everything they need with them and tote bags are a great tool.

My friend, Marie, did that for several years. Her son’s private school was a long distance from home. Rather than driving back and forth several times a day, she worked in the school as a volunteer for something meaningful to do while she waited for his school day to be completed.

So, this is what Marie did to be prepared>> she bought herself a book bag, just like the one her son had. She packed it like she was going on a trip! She had her lunch, snacks, water bottle, first aid supplies, books and magazines, a notepad, pens, cellphone, manicure kit, crocheting…the works.  She was prepared! That way, when her work for the school was finished,  she had things with her to occupy her time while she waited for T to come out to the car. What a brilliant plan!

Book bags are OK but I like tote bags even better. They serve the dual purpose of a purse and a tote, all in one.

Do you use a tote bag for your supplies?  What is it like?  Crafty ladies love to make their own. Here are some really great DIY’s that you can make and some “ready made” for those who would like to have their’s right away!

How To Make A Bean Bag That Will Be The Best Gift They Ever Got!

I kid you not – this bean bag could easily be the best gift you have ever given! I received a bean bag as a Christmas gift one year when I was a high school guidance counselor. Our receptionist gave it to me as a holiday gift and I still count it as one of the best gifts I have ever received!

DIY bean bags make great gifts #crafts #gifts

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

This bean bag is not a toy and is for use by adults. It is a heatable pillow filled with corn and it makes life so much nicer. You can place the bag in your microwave, heat it for 1 -2 minutes and use it to warm your hands, your feet or anyplace else that needs to be warmed. *Always supervise the heating of a bean bag in a microwave. Do not ever leave it unattended.

I did not have any aches or pains at the time I received mine but I was working in an environment where our office got extremely cold during the winter. The school building was circa 1939 and the chilling winter wind would whip right through the large room. I could barely type on my keyboard, it was so cold. So, I would bring that bean bag to school every day, nuke it and keep it on my lap. As my hands got too cold, I would slip them under that delightful little gift to get the feeling back in my fingers.  I never left it at school, though. It always came home with me so that I could use it as a bed warmer. I placed that heated bean bag under the covers,  right where my feet would be. They stayed toasty warm all night long!

After many years and many washings (it has a washable outer cover) the kernels inside the bag disintegrated. It was time to learn how to make one myself!

Making a bean bag proved to be easy to do. In fact, it was fun to make.  So, I  made a whole bunch of them as holiday gifts. My niece still uses hers today. My second bag lasted another 5+ years. We’d still be using it now but it disappeared. I have no idea how you lose such a valuable tool of comfort but it’s gone!

Just this week, my hubby was experiencing some very sore shoulders and asked where ours had gone. It truly had vanished. I have no clue where it went.  He really needs a couple of them so I made two and I photographed the process for you so that you can make some, too.

These “bean bags” are more precisely “corn bags” because they are filled with whole corn kernels. They are the kind of corn kernels that you use for feeding livestock and can be purchased at your local feed store or possibly a garden or pet store. You can also order them online from Amazon, which is as easy as it gets!

I bought my corn kernels at a feed store. They told me that many crafters come into the store but they often buy flax seed, because it is less moist. Wanting to stick with what I know,  I solved the moisture problem by slow-baking a big baking tray full of the corn feed on a baking sheet. I started it at 350°  and set my timer for about an hour.  Then I reduced the heat to 225° and left it for another 4 hours. It did not damage the corn* and the corn dried it out nicely. Cool the corn kernels completely before stuffing your bean bag.

Tip: keep an eye on the corn while in the oven. If you see it starting to “toast” you will want to reduce the heat right away.

How To Make A Bean Bag

The parts of your bean bag consist of an inner bag, which will be completely sown closed after it has been filled with the corn kernels, and an outer bag. The outer bag is a cover, like a slip cover, that has an opening to allow you to remove it for washing. Be sure to use durable, washable fabric. In this instance, I used a brand new white pillowcase that I cut down to make two inner bags. The outer cover is made from cotton or flannel fabric. The cover on my original bag was a pretty flannel so it was very soft.

Tools & Supplies Needed For Making A Bean Bag

1 cotton pillowcase

1 yard soft washable printed fabric (cotton or flannel)

3-4 cups whole kernel corn feed for animals

Sewing Machine

Internal bean bag filled with corn

Both sides of the bean bag and how to make one

Directions

Pre-wash the fabric and dry it to assure that there will be no shrinkage when you wash the outer cover in the future.

Cut the printed cotton or flannel fabric in a rectangle. I used an 8 1/2 X 11 inch piece of copy paper as a pattern. This will be the outer slip-cover for your bag.

Utilizing the already sewn sides and bottom of the pillowcase, cut two internal bags. They should be approximately 7 1/2 X 10 inches. All you have to do is take that copy paper and a ruler and cut 1 inch off one short end and one long end of the paper and you will have the pattern for this internal bag.

The inside bag gets totally sown on all sides. First, sew three sides and a couple of inches of the fourth. Leave a long section open so that you can turn it right side out and fill it with the prepared whole kernels of corn.

Now, sew the remaining open part so that the corn is securely inside. Next, it is time to make the pretty outer cover.

Fold over the two long sides  of the rectangle of fabric about an inch and sew them to finish them. They will become the open “envelop” part of your slip cover.

Fold the rectangle in thirds so that the finished parts overlap each other about an inch.

Pin the ends and sew them.

Turn the slip cover right side out and stuff it with the bean bag

You are done!

Using Your New Homemade Bean Bag

IMPORTANT: Every microwave is different so it is important that you test it out on yours.   It is very important to know that heating this non-food item in a microwave could be dangerous if it gets too hot and could even be a fire hazard if heated too long.  Start with 1 minute and work your way up, if desired.  Make sure the bean bag can still easily be handled in your bare hands and is not too warm.  ALWAYS stay right by the microwave while it is heating. Stop the microwave if you detect any problem. Do NOT use for young children.

*This author is not responsible for the use or misuse of this craft. Please do not allow children to operate a microwave or use a bean bag.

Enjoy!

Painting Rocks Is Fun And They Make Great Gifts

If you are looking for a different kind of craft to make with your kids, try painting rocks. It is fun and full of possibilities for gift giving. Painted rocks make great paper weights, accents for gardens, even game pieces for tic tac toe! What other ways can you think of for using painted rocks?

Rock painting is fun and easy to do!

How to Paint Rocks

.

..

This blog contains Amazon affiliate links. ❤️

.

..

1. First, find some smooth stones or rocks. You may have them right in your own backyard but, if you don’t, stop by your local Dollar Tree and buy some. They often have collections of rocks in their craft section and it costs, you guessed it, a DOLLAR!

2. Next, wash and dry the stones.

3. Paint each stone with a base color that will be your background. Use Acrylic Outdoor Paints. For texture, you can dot the paint with a dry sponge. Allow each rock to dry well before proceeding to the next step.

4. Now, lightly draw the outline of your design onto the rock. You will use it as a guide for the paint. Chalk or pencil work well for drawing the pattern or words on.

5. Carefully paint the design, using a different brush for each color. Again, allow the paint to dry unless it is your intention is to blend colors. If so, go for it and mix away!

6. Finally, paint the whole rock with a clear sealant such as Modge Podge to protect the color.

Tip:  if you will be layering colors, dry each layer well before adding the next one.
