Ever Heard of Blue Light Blocking Glasses?

Are you living a life where you look into a lit screen for hours upon hours a day? Most of us are. For nearly all of us, the primary tool that we use for our jobs is a computer. And, now that many of us are working from home, we have added to that screen time online business meetings.  Schooling has gone to virtual classrooms, as well.  Whether it is cellphones or laptops or television sets, people are gazing at screens which emit blue light all day long!

Blue light blocking glasses #healthylliving

So what is “blue light?”

Blue light is a component of visible light. It is the part of the spectrum in natural and artificial light that influences our bodies to keep us alert and awake in the daytime.  As the sun goes down in the evening, the decrease in light helps our bodies to produce melatonin. Melatonin makes us relax and become sleepy.  The process in our bodies that the daylight to nighttime cycle triggers is known as the circadian rhythm.

“Blue light from electronics is linked to problems like blurry vision, eye strain, dry eye, macular degeneration and cataracts…”

We need both daytime and nighttime to be healthy people. But with our abundance of technology, we are getting robbed of that transition to sleep by looking at our phones, television sets and computers well past sundown.  Our bodies continuously get blue light and production of melatonin is suppressed as a result. In fact, even our daytime use of technology is giving us too much blue light.

So, what about getting a good night’s sleep?  Some people take melatonin supplements to get sleepy but there is also another solution we can try:  blue light filtering eye glasses.  What convinced me to give it a try was a line that I read in the description of an article by Web MD:   “Blue light from electronics is linked to problems like blurry vision, eye strain, dry eye, macular degeneration and cataracts…”

Read more => “Seeing Blue: How Does Blue Light Affect Your Health?”

Then, as I browsed Amazon looking at blue light blocking glasses,  I read a couple of testimonials by people – such as this top review –  who purchased blue light glasses. Verified customers were saying that they noticed an improvement in their stamina as they worked long days online.  Many were saying that they were sleeping better at night, too.  So, I bought a set of three pairs of glasses for a very reasonable price.  I have been using them now for about two months and I do notice an improvement in my ability to get to sleep at night. And, on days when I work for hours on my laptop, I don’t feel exhausted like I used to.  Who knew that blocking blue light could do so much good?  Not me! But I am so glad I found them.

So, I keep one pair of blue light blocking computer glasses in my bedroom, in case I want to use my cell phone or watch some TV before going to sleep.  I store another pair conveniently near my laptop.  I bring the third pair with me when I go to the office for work.

Set of blue light blocking glasses – fashionable!  #Ad

There are many combinations of styles to choose from, for some fashion variety.  The set I bought includes one clear pair of glasses, one pink and one a brownish print. I love them.

My glasses came in a stylish giftbox. That was a nice surprise. I didn’t need a fancy box but if I were to give them to someone else as a gift, the pretty box makes it special!  Here is a picture of them. The third, clear pair, was still inside the box when I took the photo:

When You Can’t Be There To Give Them A Hug

When you can't be there to give them a hug - little girl hugging a toy teddy bear #family #love

Of course, we are all living in an unprecedented time. Families all over the world are sequestered – quarantined – due to a global pandemic. This is something that most of us never imagined. Wherever possible people are now working from home, mostly online. We are learning how to do our jobs as best as we can while distancing ourselves physically from others.

What I love is the ingenuity that many are using to bring encouragement and comfort to others while living up to the health-based limitations we must follow. It is very cool to see the thoughtful ingenuity going on out there.

Have you been reaching out in unusual ways? Let’s share some ideas here and see if there are some new things we can do to express loving care for others!

A firetruck waiting to be part of a parade #firetrucks

1.A small town where I live has been cheering up the children who are out of school by putting on a FIRE ENGINE PARADE twice a week! The fire trucks drive by, sirens and lights going, while the little ones wave out the window at them! The kids love it and the firefighters do, too.

We can't #hug right now but there are ways ♥ How are you cheering yourself and others up? #love #family #friends #hope #healthyliving #safetyfirst Share on X

2.One little girl was having her 10th birthday but the big birthday party her family had planned was canceled. The families who would have brought their children to the soiree  still bought her presents.  They drove by in their cars waving, honking their horns and singing “Happy Birthday to You.”  They left wrapped birthday gifts at the sidewalk for her parents to bring in. It was so special!

Birthday party with a pretty lady and a teddy bear #family

3.Some “anonymous somebody” the other night put on a fireworks display. It was the real deal – professional grade!  Just hearing the sound was encouraging. It brought back fond memories of the 4th of July. We couldn’t see it from our house but someone got to see it and we were all smiles in appreciation for the gesture.

4.A family where the mom has some delicate health conditions going on – she is on a feeding tube and cannot risk getting sick – has been struggling with loneliness and a little depression. A best-buddy of the dad wanted to cheer his friend up. So, he came by and sat alone on the front porch. The dad opened the screened window and sat on the other side. They watched a tv show together, the friend watching from outside – the dad inside, and visited.

5.Our local news station showed the reuniting of a very little girl – maybe 3 or 4 years old – and her mother. They had been separated from each other for many days. Her mom is an essential healthcare worker.

When she finally did see her mom- who was wearing a mask for safety – she jumped into her arms and cried the deepest, heartfelt crocodile tears. No words can describe what she must have been feeling, missing her,  but it was profound.

What do you do when you cannot hug? #love #hug #family #healthy Share on X

We all need hugs and kisses and touch. So what do you do when hugs aren’t possible? Make a phone call? How about a family video party? The sound of a friendly voice means a lot.

The creative ideas I shared are just a sample of what many people are doing to keep their spirits up and not neglect the needy. Share your ideas in the comments. We’d love to hear from you ♥

Top Benefit Of Gelatin That I Needed The Most

Pain relief is the number one  reason that I added gelatin to my diet and I am so glad that I did. What really surprises me is how quickly the pain goes away.

Top reason I added gelatin to my diet #nutrition #painrelief

I have been dealing with a lot of pain in my hips, right leg and foot lately. My chiropractor has gotten me through many an injury, but I have been looking for a way to resolve the pain while I wait for the treatments to take hold.

Knox gelatin #ad

Knox Gelatin 2-Pack

Over-the-counter pain killers just haven’t been doing it. Then I remembered hearing that gelatin helps with pain. I had some Knox unflavored gelatin in my cupboard, so I opened a single-serving envelop, added it to water and drank it. Within 30 minutes – yes, that fast – the pain in my leg and hips was gone!

Now, gelatin is not a cure for what is causing the pain but it sure does give me relief for hours. As long as I remember to take it every day – and when I forget I do remember because the pain comes back – it works quite well. Thankfully, this is not a condition that will be forever. I am getting better day by day. But since gelatin has other great health and beauty benefits,  I plan on keeping it in my daily routine from now on.

First, what is gelatin anyway?  Sometimes referred to as a “super-food,” gelatin is a protein that is derived from animal parts. Some people make bone broth as a way to get it into their diet. That is too much work for me. I am very happy to keep using powdered gelatin, thank you very much!

.

What do they say are the benefits and uses of gelatin?

  1. Pain relief – especially joint pain
  2. Anti-aging – improves skin health and actually can rejuvenate your complexion.
  3. Improves digestion
  4. Improves quality of sleep
  5. Helps lower stress hormones – has a happy, calming effect.
  6. May maintain heart health
  7. Controls hunger
  8. Good for bone health

Hey, do you have pets?  Furry pets?  If you do, then you have PET HAIR all over the place, right?  I love my dogs but I was  getting so frustrated about the pet hair on the carpets, the floors, the furniture and, especially, my clothes!  Two English Yellow Labs make a LOT of fur!!

Just when I’d think I’d found a good solution, it never worked out.  It was discouraging. So, when I finally heard about, and tried, Shark vacuums, I did a happy dance … day after day … because it works every day, PERFECTLY!  I highly recommend Shark upright vacuum cleaners.  Their other products are probably great, too, but my experience is with their vacuum cleaner, which has been  fabulous!

The Many Wonders Of Turmeric

Do you love curry? I have two amazing recipes made with curry – Chicken Divan and Curry Cheese Ball Appetizer.  They are DELICIOUS. Though I have made these favorite dishes over and over again, I never realized that “curry” has in it a nutritional wonder called “Turmeric.”

Turmeric Curcumin with amazing health benefits #health #tips

Turmeric is what gives curry that familiar yellow color. On its own, Turmeric is brimming full of nutritional value for the body and the brain. But Turmeric isn’t alone. It also has a secret little treasure in it called “Curcumin.”

Curcumin packs a powerful healthy punch both as an anti-inflammatory and an anti-oxidant. Together, they are amazing.

Turmeric Curcumin supplement

The reason I am even talking about this is that I just started using a supplement which is a combination of Turmeric, Curcumin with black pepper.*

You see, I was having some aches and pains that were making it hard to sleep at night. My hips and shoulders were hurting and the over-the-counter pain med I was using [Ibuprofen] wasn’t taking care of it. Rather than upping the dosage, I wanted to try something natural. I did some research and Turmeric/Curcumin with black pepper sounded like it could be the answer. Guess what? It was! I tried it and it really works for me! No more pain at all.

*Why is black pepper in it, you ask? Simple. Curcumin is not well-absorbed by the body. Black pepper aids in absorption.

Here are some of the exciting benefits of Turmeric/Curcumin that convinced me to try it for myself…and I am so glad that I did.

7 Best Ways To Keep From Hurting Yourself

We have all heard about “weekend warriors.” You know the deal. Weekend Warriors are people that spend all week sitting in an office, exercising very little, and on the weekend they tackle the world. Every undone chore is on their “to do” list. Ultimately, many will pay for it with strained muscles or worse.

So, how much physical pain is self-inflicted? A lot! Making unwise choices, ignoring little signals when light pain begins or neglecting ourselves can lead to a whole string of physical maladies that are simply not necessary. We all talk about “taking care of ourselves” but sometimes our efforts are too little too late.

7 best ways to take care of yourself and keep from getting hurt #tips

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

Here are some ways to prevent pain before it happens:

7 Best Ways To Keep From Hurting Yourself

Walk – walking is a perfect form of exercise. We were made to walk and there are so many ways to incorporate this simple movement into your lifestyle. When shopping, park farther away from the door so that you get in a nice walk on your way into the store.

Have you seen those dog-walking commercials on TV? They look like they are having so much fun “walking it out” that I got inspired to walk my own dogs more often. My dogs need the exercise and so do I! I have two dogs and I take them on walks separately. Sadie, the yellow lab, is older and she likes to stop and sniff things as she goes. Bailey, the puppy, trots along at a fast pace. When I take them one at a time, they can each enjoy their special time out their own way and I get lots more exercise.

Lawn cutting is another way to add steps to the day. We used to have someone cut our lawn for us. He moved away and, rather than looking for someone else to do it, I bought myself a self-powered walk behind lawn mower. I love cutting the lawn and it is another way to add movement into my week!

If lawn cutting isn’t possible, you can always vacuum the carpets more often! The primary objective here is to build more movement to your life.

Stand – does your job require many hours of sitting at a computer? Consistently sitting for many hours is not good for your health. Make a point of getting up from the computer and walking around every so often. If you need to, set a timer to reminder yourself to get up and move.

Recognizing the hazard of sitting at work too much, many employers have installed standing desks in their offices. They easily adjust from sit to stand to sit again and you don’t miss a beat! The prices are quite reasonable for work-at-homes to get one of their own. The investment is well worth it.

Strengthen – lifting light weights every day can maintain or even strengthen your muscles. If you are not accustomed to working out, go easy. Start lifting  very light weight dumb bells or even two unopened cans of soup! Consistency is the key. As the repetitions become easier, you can increase the number of times you do it and even add a little more weight. You aren’t out to set a record. The goal is to protect your body by building strength.

Get Help – do not lift or carry things that are too heavy for you. Do you know how many times you lift the same groceries in one shopping trip? At least five times. Don’t believe me? Think about it.

  1. You take them off of the shelf and put them into your cart.
  2. You take them back out of the cart and put them on the conveyor.
  3. Then you take the bags out of the cart, again, to put in your car.
  4. Fourth time, you take them out of your car and bring them into the house.
  5. Finally (fifth time) you unload the bags to put the items away. That is a lot of lifting! Grocery stores often have people who will load your bags into the cart. That will eliminate one lift. If you have help at home, definitely take advantage of the opportunity. Make it a bit easier on yourself at the store and ask the cashier to pack the bags lightly. Then it is up to you to not carry too many of them at a time.

Watch for Signs – sometimes the very thing we use to make our lives easier can be causing a strain on our joints. Our son learned this lesson the hard way. His backpack for school and athletic bag were so packed full of stuff that he was injuring his shoulder, which was already sore from throwing a ball. He switched to a bag on wheels, which eased the strain.

Have you ever had a purse that was too heavy? Same deal. Get a light weight purse and keep contents to a minimum. Don’t strain your joints. If you feel a twinge in a shoulder, for instance, switch that purse to the other side. Change what you are doing right away so that you don’t do any more harm.

Sports Parents: a rolling cart can be a real blessing when taking stuff to the field. Check out this collapsible sports utility cart...it can also be used for going to the beach or even for gardening!

Nutrition – eat sensibly, keep your weight down and take health-boosting supplements like joint supporting glucosamine – chondroitin – msm supplements.*

Staying hydrated is another key to physical well being. The signs of dehydration can include muscle cramps and/or headache. Keep a water bottle filled so that you sip all day long.

Sleep – getting a good night’s sleep let’s your body repair and refresh. Is it hard to fall asleep? Try cutting off the use of caffeine earlier and definitely before evening. Slow down your activities as the day comes to a close and unwind before bedtime. If sleep still eludes you, try taking a melatonin supplement.*

Sadly, sleep itself can produce problems. Some of us have experienced muscle and joint pain after a long night’s sleep. That is just so wrong, wouldn’t you say? It is not the way to start a day. If you struggle with muscle or joint aches after sleeping, consider that you may need a new pillow or even a more comfortable mattress.

How to keep from hurting yourself when you are catching up on household chores #healthyliving #tips Share on X

*Though these health supplements are over-the-counter products, it is a good idea to consult your medical professional when adding something to your health regimen, especially if you have a pre-existing condition.

One of the ways to keep from hurting yourself is to stay in shape. Keep moving! #tips

Enjoy!

How To Make Natural Bug Repellent and Why

Father and daughter on a fun nature walk #tips

Do you have an “outdoorsy” family or does everyone prefer a nice cozy day inside? Even if your family is not the camping type, getting the kids outside for some recreation is essential to their health and well-being.

Nothing beats a nature walk in the woods or a fun afternoon at the playground to lift the spirits. Of course, being outdoors does come with a price – bugs! Yes, insects also like being outdoors. They think they own the place!

Bug bites or stings are common when kids play outdoors and a bug bite could irritate child’s skin for days. In addition, some insects carry nasty diseases that can be passed on through those bites. So, avoiding insects is wise. So, instead of giving up your outings, find a way to repel those little creatures.

The best, safest way to repel insects is to make your own homemade natural bug spray using all-natural ingredients. Parents prefer to use homemade natural bug spray because the chemicals in products like DEET are, well… pretty nasty.

The Problem With DEET

Your child’s pores absorb everything and anything you put on the skin, including products like DEET which contain chemicals and additives that could cause the body harm.

A 1980’s study was documented where DEET was used by National Park employees for a set amount of time, and during that time a quarter of them experienced horrible side effects like feeling dizzy, experiencing burning on their lips, feeling sick and getting rashes.

Even more worrying was a test that followed on animals which showed using DEET for a prolonged period has the ability to kill brain cells and cause behavioral changes.

Very scary stuff, right?

You may consider using a natural product from a supermarket as an alternative, but you can’t guarantee the product is all natural as advertising laws only require you have 10% natural ingredients in the whole product. So, the other 90% could unfortunately be chemicals.

So, it isn’t hard to see why homemade natural bug spray is preferable to parents when it comes to the health and safety of their children. These magical mixes can easily ward off nasty bugs, they are much better for the environment which is heavily affected by chemical use, they are safe to use, and they smell great too!

So are you ready to make some child-friendly bug spray for your little outdoor explorers?

Can You Just Blend Any Essential Oil to Make Child-Friendly Natural Bug Spray?

Make your own DIY bug repellent #tips

You can mix any essential oil to create an amazing bug spray but there are lots of considerations to make before applying the mix to a child or adult in order to keep everything as safe as possible:

Phototoxic Essential Oils

Some essential oils are phototoxic, which means they can make the skin more sun-sensitive. This sensitivity can lead to blistering, burning and inflammation of the skin. In the case of insect repellent for children, it is best to avoid phototoxic essential oils altogether to be on the safe side. You can find a good list of phototoxic essential oils here.

Dilution of Your Solutions

Essential oils should always be diluted because using them at full strength could irritate the skin. Diluting essential oils is usually done with a product like coconut oil because water and oil don’t mix.

Essential oils for homemade bug repellent

Be Aware of Allergies

Children and adults using the bug spray should take note of any unwanted reactions to single oils or certain oil combinations so as not to use those ingredients or combination of ingredients again.

Different Applications

When creating your bug spray think about how it will be used, which will affect what you put in it. A bug spray going onto the skin to keep the bugs away from the body needs careful consideration to ensure it doesn’t cause a reaction, is safe for the skin of the person using it, and to ensure proper dilution.

A bug spray for a diffuser, which is used to keep bugs away from somewhere like a back porch or camping setup, can be much stronger and the ingredients can be mixed much more freely.

Use by Pregnant Women or Children

Some oils cannot be used during the first trimester of pregnancy, and some can’t be used at all during pregnancy and breastfeeding. They can cause all kinds of strange symptoms and issues you wouldn’t expect essential oils to cause, such as contractions.

You can find an extensive list of unsafe pregnancy oils here, but if you are every unsure, always check with your healthcare provider first. Certain oils are also unsafe for use by children, and the safety of use then varies again depending on the child’s age.

You can find an extensive list of oils and whether they are safe for children here. Again, if you are ever unsure check with your healthcare provider first.

The Bug Repellent Essential Oils

Lots of oils are bug repellent, but we have selected a special few to go in our awesome homemade natural child-friendly bug spray recipes below.

  • Witch Hazel – Wards off mosquitoes, reduces inflammation, soothes skin and is generally safe for use by children of any age, but should be used with caution as contact dermatitis can occur
  • Lavender – Repels moths, fleas, flies and mosquitoes, aids sleep and relaxation, suitable for children of any age
  • Geranium – Repels mosquitoes, soothes acne and skin inflammation, generally safe for children of all ages
  • Patchouli – Wards off mosquitoes, spiders and flies, has antiseptic properties and is generally safe for children aged 2 years and over
  • Spearmint – Repels mosquitoes, ants and flies, has antiseptic properties and is generally safe for children aged 2 years and over
  • Citronella – Wards off mosquitoes, flies, moths and spiders, has antibacterial and antiseptic properties and is generally safe for children of all ages
  • Lemongrass – Repels spiders, moths, flies and mosquitoes, has antiseptic properties and is generally safe for children ages 2 years and over

Natural Bug Spray Protects Your Whole Family Safely

Making a natural bug spray is a really great alternative to chemical-laden options like DEET. However, essential oils should always be used with caution. Take care to:

  • Be aware that a lot of information on essential oils is conflicted, so seek professional advice from a healthcare provider if you are unsure
  • Be careful with phototoxic essential oils and perform a patch test 24 hours before using any homemade bug spray on your child’s skin
  • No essential oil should ever be ingested
  • Avoid spraying the mix into the eyes. If this does happen use coconut oil or a similar oil to clean the eyes with a paper towel
  • If at any point an extreme allergic reaction is apparent, or you are concerned essential oils have been absorbed when they shouldn’t have been, seek emergency help

As long as you exercise caution, natural homemade bug spray is a great mixture to use to protect your children from nasty bug bites. It is just as effective as the often highly-priced, chemical rich alternatives you can buy from the store.

Once you’ve gotten used to mixing and making child-friendly bug sprays like the ones above in our recipes, you’ll be making your very own effective, natural, safe and beautifully scented mixtures in no time.

Your family can be bug-bite free all whilst saving their skin and the environment of unnecessary chemical use.
