Preschool teachers can tell you that not every craft project will fit into every preschool day. Things happen in preschool. This particular day I knew in advance that our schedule was crammed full and we would not have enough time for the kiddos to complete my usual Letter S is for Spring fork painting craft. It is a great craft that introduces little ones to a whole new way of painting.

With less time available, I was looking for a new craft that would be just as pretty but less time-consuming.

This pretty spring craft – a paper cupcake liner craft – was the perfect choice! My children caught on quickly. Be sure to let your kiddos do most of the work themselves. That is the fun of it!

*I did not bother making a template for cutting the leaves and stems. Since our time was limited, I pre-cut stems and leaves for the children and brought them to school with me. It is very easy to do and your kids may enjoy doing it themselves.

This stunning heart-shaped suncatcher is perfect for a Valentine’s Day craft. I first saw the project on Fireflies and Mudpies and was struck by its beauty. The process looked easy so I knew that my preschoolers could make their own sun-catchers with just a little bit of adult help.
My kiddos (ages 3 and 4) would definitely need an adult to cut out the final heart shape. Besides that, the rest of the craft would be easy to do as long as one of us was available to coach them through the steps.

*Tip #1: Sheet protectors are sleeves in which you can slip a sheet of paper to protect it. There is, therefore, a top and bottom layer of plastic to each one. On Fireflies and Mudpies, Melissa peels the tissue paper layer off of the sheet protector and discards all of the plastic. I chose to keep the tissue layer attached to the top layer of plastic for stability. My little kiddos do not have the delicate touch needed to transport it or hang it without a plastic backing.
.
Note: it takes at least 90 minutes for the craft to dry before you can cut it into a heart shape. My 12 kiddos each made one this week in preschool. I wanted the hearts to be in the window when the children returned to our classroom following their gym class so I taped smaller hearts with their first names on them onto the window, first. Then I cut out the heart shapes while they were out of the room. When everything was completed, I completed the display and hung their artwork above their names.

Tip #2: the sides of the heart will curl a bit, if only taped in the middle. When you are ready to hang them up for a while, do use more than one rolled up piece of clear tape or clear double-sided tape.

This F is for Frog kids craft is so special. The frog “leaps” for joy and so will you. Think about it. Can you imagine the glee when a little preschooler brings this project home to show everyone that his frog is hopping on its lily pad? You will love the excitement.

As craft projects go, this one takes some additional adult preparation. Typically, young children should experience cutting paper as often as possible. This craft, though, would be doomed to failure in the hands of a 3 year old with scissors. It is difficult to cut out. For that reason, I prepare the pieces in advance. I come to school with the small pieces pre-cut and sorted into individual plastic bags. Each child gets one. The extra preparation makes it fun, not frustrating, to do.

Print an F is for Frog sheet, which will be the base, using either white or light blue card-stock.
Print lily pads on green paper and cut them out.
Print frog outlines, eye balls, bugs, dots, lily onto white card-stock.
Laminate the pages of parts (not the frog – the kids will color it.)*
Why laminate? Little hands and ink jet print don’t always go well together. The ink can run or smear. Before cutting them out, I laminate the small parts including the eyes, bugs and flower for the lily pad to preserve the images.
Cut out the parts ahead of time for the students, then have them assemble the craft for themselves.
Color the frog with green crayon.
Glue the green lily pad onto the middle of the F is for Frog sheet, using a glue stick.
Glue eyes onto the frog
Glue bugs and the lily flower onto the lily pad.
Put a couple of streaks of white school glue onto the pad and sprinkle glitter on them.
Glue the frog to the spring and the lily pad.

HOW TO MAKE THE FROG’S SPRING: cut a rectangular piece of cardstock 1 inch wide by 4 inches long. Fold it into quarters. Glue one end to the center of the lily pad, put glue on the other end of the spring and press the frog onto it. Now you have a hopping frog on its own lily pad.

Recently I shared with you just how enthused I was over our U is for Under The Sea preschool ocean lesson. It was a super fun day just packed full of learning.

Well, let me tell you that I am just as thrilled about our W is for Weather day this year. We had so much fun and learned a whole bunch about the weather!
.
..
If nothing else, my kiddos went home that day knowing “Lightning you SEE, thunder you HEAR!” But they learned more than that, you can be certain.
.
..
Yes, our weather lesson included a homemade tornado, a scientific reenactment of rain clouds and a craft that I am going to share with you today: sunshine and rain. What I love about this craft is the 3-D effect the little mini-marshmallows give to the clouds in the picture. We displayed these pictures at our year-end open house. I am so proud of my little artists!

EXPERIMENT #1: We made a tornado in a bottle!
EXPERIMENT #2: We also illustrated what happens when the water droplets in clouds get too heavy, they fall to the earth as rain. This preschool shaving cream “science experiment” from Debbie Chapman’s blog “One Little Project” is a perfect example: Shaving Cream Rain Clouds.

Directions
If you are making this project with several children, you may want to prepare some of the parts in advance.
Using a spoon, flatten the marshmallows a bit.
Print the weather scene on light blue paper.
Note: sunshine side is left side of the picture, rain/storm side is right.
Color the flowers using crayons or markers.
Print the sun circles and lightning bolts on yellow paper.*
Cut long strips of green paper for the grass. Have your little one(s) fringe the green strip using scissors.
Glue-stick the sun & lightning bolts on the page.
Do the same for the green “grass” fringe at the bottom of the page.
*Use the scraps from the yellow paper to cut out sun beams and glue them on, too.
Using white school glue, glue 13 squished mini-marshmallows onto the cloud.
Done!
Oh, how I have looked forward to teaching this lesson. In previous years we did T is for Tee Pee, T is for Turkey and T is for Teeth. It was time to do Turtles – especially with the fond memories I have of “my own” turtle named Manfred. *amazing story below

As I sat down with my little class to talk about the mysteries of the letter Q, we began by talking about what it looks like. As I only had one day to discuss this wondrous letter, we concentrated on capital letter Q.
First, I wrote the letter C on the board and asked them “what letter is this?” They all chimed in “C” Then I closed it up and they yelled “O” Then I showed them the squiggly that makes an O turn into a Q.
Finally, we talked about words that start with the letter Q. We touched upon Quail, Quarter, Quick, Quack, one of my favorites “Quiet” and Q-Tip. We eventually made our way to our topic of the day – Queen.

That very same day, we did a great Q-tip painting activity using the letter Q. The kids had lots of fun. I love painting other ways than just paint and paint brush. So far we have used plastic forks, marshmallows, shaving cream, sponges and now q-tips.
Enjoy!

T is for Turkey is a perfect alphabet theme for preschool and kindergarten age children. This Letter T toilet paper roll craft also goes well with a Thanksgiving lesson.
Each school year we move up our Letter T lesson to coincide with Thanksgiving. This year I chose a craft for my preschoolers that was abundantly simple to do. The T is for Turkey Tissue Craft and our Tee Pee Preschool Craft are also great projects but this year we had so much going on that I needed one that would take less time. It worked out perfectly. Aren’t they cute?
To assure victory, I pre-cut the feathers and other body parts: wattle, snood, beak, turkey feet. Then I glued the wattle, beak and snood into one piece so that placement would be easy. Even so, we had some unique placements on a couple of these works of art. My favorite has to be the one with eyeballs on the feathers (below.) So adorable.
