Microwave Play Dough Is The Super Easy Way To Make Homemade Play Dough

I love making play dough. There is something fun about developing this colorful toy by yourself,  knowing that a child  you love will have hours of play ahead of him. Making microwave play dough is by far the easiest way!
Microwave Play Dough Recipe #kids

The classic playdough recipe, cooked on the stove, works great but it takes a lot of elbow-grease stirring and stirring. So, when I came across a recipe for MICROWAVE play dough, I had to give it a try.
Oh my goodness, is this so easy and the play dough turns out just as pliable and deeply colorful as ever. I won’t be making the old recipe again!

Ingredients

1 cup water
1 generous T cooking oil
10-20 drops Neon food coloring**
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/3 cup salt
1 cup bleached flour*
*Bleached flour is whiter and gives you a truer color.
**Neon food coloring is the most vivid.

Directions

Use a microwave-safe mixing bowl. This process takes about 5 minutes including prep.
Combine water, oil, food coloring and stir.
Add cream of tartar, and stir again.

Pretty Spring Craft That Kids Will Love to Make

Preschool teachers can tell you that not every craft project will fit into every preschool day. Things happen in preschool. This particular day I knew in advance that our schedule was crammed full and we would not have enough time for the kiddos to complete my usual Letter S is for Spring fork painting craft. It is a great craft that introduces little ones to a whole new way of painting.

Fun S is for Spring cupcake liner craft for #kids

With less time available, I was looking for a new craft that would be just as pretty but less time-consuming.

This pretty spring craft – a paper cupcake liner craft – was the perfect choice! My children caught on quickly. Be sure to let your kiddos do most of the work themselves. That is the fun of it!

Stunning Heart Shaped Sun Catcher Valentine’s Day Craft

This stunning heart-shaped suncatcher is perfect for a Valentine’s Day craft. I first saw the project on Fireflies and Mudpies and was struck by its beauty. The process looked easy so I knew that my preschoolers could make their own sun-catchers with just a little bit of adult help.

My kiddos (ages 3 and 4) would definitely need an adult to cut out the final heart shape. Besides that, the rest of the craft would be easy to do as long as one of us was available to coach them through the steps.

How To Make Heart Shaped Sun Catchers

  1. Cut various colors of tissue  paper into small pieces
  2. Paint a clear plastic sheet protector with Modge Podge
  3. Lightly place the tissue paper pieces onto the gluey surface
  4. Paint another layer of Modge Podge on top
  5. Lay it out to dry
  6. When dry, cut a heart shape out of the top layer of plastic and discard the bottom layer.

.

*Tip #1: Sheet protectors are sleeves in which you can slip a sheet of paper to protect it. There is, therefore, a top and bottom layer of plastic to each one. On Fireflies and Mudpies, Melissa peels the tissue paper layer off of the sheet protector and discards all of the plastic.  I chose to keep the tissue layer attached to the top layer of plastic for stability. My little kiddos do not have the delicate touch needed to transport it or hang it without a plastic backing.

.

Note: it takes at least 90 minutes for the craft to dry before you can cut it into a heart shape. My 12 kiddos each made one this week in preschool. I wanted the hearts to be in the window when the children returned to our classroom following their gym class so I taped smaller hearts with their first names on them onto the window, first. Then I cut out the heart shapes while they were out of the room. When everything was completed, I completed the display and hung their artwork above their names.

Display of heart shaped suncatchers made by preschoolers #kidscrafts

Tip #2: the sides of the heart will curl a bit, if only taped in the middle. When you are ready to hang them up for a while, do use more than one rolled up piece of clear tape or clear double-sided tape.

F is for Frog Preschool Craft

This F is for Frog kids craft is so special. The frog “leaps” for joy and so will you. Think about it. Can you imagine the glee when a little preschooler brings this project home to show everyone that his frog is hopping on its lily pad? You will love the excitement.

Adorable craft F is for Frog for preschool

As craft projects go, this one takes some additional adult preparation. Typically,  young children should experience cutting paper as often as possible.  This craft, though, would be doomed to failure in the hands of a 3 year old with scissors. It is difficult to cut out. For that reason, I prepare the pieces in advance. I come to school with the small pieces pre-cut and sorted into individual plastic bags. Each child gets one. The extra preparation makes it fun, not frustrating, to do.

Card stock (white)

Green copy paper for lily pads.

Glitter

Glue sticks

White school glue

Scissors

Green crayons

Free Printable Templates (below)

Side view of the frog kids craft where you can see the lily on the pad.

Directions

Print an F is for Frog sheet, which will be the base, using either white or light blue card-stock.

Print lily pads on green paper and cut them out.

Print frog outlines, eye balls, bugs, dots, lily onto white card-stock.

Laminate the pages of parts (not the frog – the kids will color it.)*

Why laminate? Little hands and ink jet print don’t always go well together. The ink can run or smear. Before cutting them out, I laminate the small parts including the eyes, bugs and flower for the lily pad to preserve the images.

Scotch thermal laminators are a teacher's best friend - moms love them, too!LAMINATOR

Cut out the parts ahead of time for the students, then have them assemble the craft for themselves.

Color the frog with green crayon.

Glue the green lily pad onto the middle of the F is for Frog sheet, using a glue stick.

Glue eyes onto the frog

Glue bugs and the lily flower onto the lily pad.

Put a couple of streaks of white school glue onto the pad and sprinkle glitter on them.

Glue the frog to the spring and the lily pad.

Make a spring out of cardstock to attach to your frog on the lily pad to make it seem to hop! #preschool

HOW TO MAKE THE FROG’S SPRING: cut a rectangular piece of cardstock 1 inch wide by 4 inches long. Fold it into quarters. Glue one end to the center of the lily pad, put glue on the other end of the spring and press the frog onto it. Now you have a hopping frog on its own lily pad.

W is for Weather Preschool Lesson & Craft With Science Experiments

Recently I shared with you just how enthused I was over our U is for Under The Sea preschool ocean lesson. It was a super fun day just packed full of learning.

W is for Weather preschool craft and lesson #preschool

Well, let me tell you that I am just as thrilled about our W is for Weather day this year. We had so much fun and learned a whole bunch about the weather!

.

..
If nothing else, my kiddos went home that day knowing “Lightning you SEE, thunder you HEAR!” But they learned more than that, you can be certain.

.

..

preschool, kids, science, crafts

Yes, our weather lesson included a homemade tornado, a scientific reenactment of rain clouds and a craft that I am going to share with you today: sunshine and rain. What I love about this craft is the 3-D effect the little mini-marshmallows give to the clouds in the picture. We displayed these pictures at our year-end open house. I am so proud of my little artists!

Cute Little T is for Turtle Preschool Craft

Little 3-D marshmallow eyes give this turtle paper plate craft for kids some dimension – cuter than cute!
T is for Turtle paper plate craft for kids.

Oh, how I have looked forward to teaching this lesson. In previous years we did T is for Tee Pee, T is for Turkey and T is for Teeth. It was time to do Turtles – especially with the fond memories I have of “my own” turtle named Manfred.  *amazing story below

Things we learned about turtles:

  • Some live on land, some live in water.
  • The ones who live on land have stumpy legs. Sea turtles and other water-dwellers have webbed feet.
  • Turtles can be itty-bitty small or huge!* (tortoises)
  • Turtles are reptiles.
  • Turtles eat a variety of foods. Some eat vegetation. Some eat insects. Some eat animals.
  • Baby turtles hatch from eggs using a “tooth” to chip their way out!

My Tortoise Story

T is for Turtle and T is for Tortoise, preschool lesson
My Tortoise Story: affectionately remembered in my kid-memory as “the best day ever!” Long long ago, in a place far, far away (Upstate New York) there was a second grade class … MY second grade class and there was a little 8 year old girl, that would be me. Though it was far in the past, the images will stay with me forever. During recess, our class was playing outside on the playground. Suddenly, I kid you not, a huge and I mean GIGANTIC tortoise slowly crept out of the woods. He was so big that two children hopped on his back, to the great distress of the shocked teachers. They couldn’t move fast enough. “Get off. Get off!”  and ” Keep away from his mouth!” They did get off but he was soon surrounded by a sea of wondering children. Can you imagine our parents when they asked us how school was that day? LOL!
We named him “Manfred.” Somebody called for help. I remember the police being there. It isn’t clear to me whether we were still outdoors when he was taken away but he did become a permanent resident of the local zoo. Manfred kept his name and he lived there for decades. He passed away a few years ago and it has been said that he was well over 100 years old. When I read the news, for a moment there I felt like a friend had died. Manfred the Tortoise will always have a special place in my heart.

T is for Turtle Paper Plate Craft

This craft is simple and fun to make. I had run out of googly eyes but came up with this brainstorm – marshmallow eyes! I had mini’s on hand. I cut them in half, put a dot of black paint on each and Voila! Eyes! I like them better than the googlies.

Green construction paper
Turtle part template on white paper
Marshmallows: mini and large
Small paintbrush

Directions
Cut the small marshmallows in half.
Paint a black tempera paint pupil on each marshmallow “eye ball”*

You will find that they harden a bit in a short period of time.

turtle, preschool, kids crafts

Cut out the turtle parts from your template.
Tape the tail onto the legs part of the turtle.
Now you will have two parts: front and bottom
Trace the front and back onto green paper and cut them out.
Staple front to one side of a paper plate shell making sure that the “dome” part of the shell will be on the correct side. You don’t want the staples and tape to show.
Do the same on the other end for the bottom legs with tail of the turtle.
Tip:you can also use some tape to secure it.
Glue the marshmallow eyes on the head.
Draw the nose and mouth using the marker.
Using large marshmallows, DOT colored tempera paint all over the paper plate, decorating his shell.
You now have one adorable turtle!

Enjoy!

Directions

This craft takes quite a lot of preparation from the adult in charge if it is going to be enjoyed by preschoolers (ages 3 & 4.) Kindergartners and 1st graders should be able to do this craft easily themselves. (Let me know, teachers!)
  1. Print the Rainbow Fish Printable (link below) onto light blue cardstock.  I always make a sample for my children to see so that they know what the goal is.
  2. Cut out the pattern. You will want the fish’s tail to be one piece and the face to be another. Also cut out the upper fin and the two bottom fins. I laid them on red paper and cut them out to glue onto the fish on the actual picture.  Glue them on to get that part out of the way.
  3. Fish Gills: print circles onto various colors of paper. They will be the gills. I used a pop bottle cap as a pattern to trace around for my first one and that became the pattern for the rest. Cut them out and then cut each circle in half. They will be glued on in layers, overlapping each other. Start at the back and layer them to the front.
  4. Print some pictures of “sea weed” onto green paper. Just go to Google and click images. Then search “sea weed + clip art” and you will find a host of possibilities. Copy and paste the images onto a document, print and cut them out.
  5. Print eyes onto white cardstock. Same deal, search Google images for for clip art of eyes. Copy, paste, print and cut out. Be prepared, some preschoolers will stress out if they don’t have TWO eyes. Good luck explaining that the fish DOES have another eye but it is on the other side! LOL I often lose that argument and just give them another eye. Anything to keep my little kiddos happy!
  6. Complete the picture by adding fish stickers (or you could glue on some Goldfish crackers) and sea weed with a little glitter for pizazz!

Letter Q is for Queen Preschool Lesson and Paper Bag Puppet Craft

Letter Q preschool lesson is not as easy to pull together as it may seem. I was thrilled when I found a free printable for a queen paper bag puppet. It was the perfect craft for letter Q! So Q is for Queen became the theme of the day.
Paper bag hand puppet Letter Q is for Queen #preschool lesson

As I sat down with my little class to talk about the mysteries of the letter Q, we began by talking about what it looks like. As I only had one day to discuss this wondrous letter, we concentrated on capital letter Q.

First, I wrote the letter C on the board and asked them “what letter is this?” They all chimed in “C”  Then I closed it up and they yelled “O”  Then I showed them the squiggly that makes an O turn into a Q.

Finally, we talked about words that start with the letter Q. We touched upon Quail, Quarter, Quick, Quack, one of my favorites “Quiet” and Q-Tip. We eventually made our way to our topic of the day – Queen.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

I asked them “What is a queen?”

“Princess.”
“King, but a girl.”
We even discussed the concept of authority.
Queens (in theory) have authority. “They tell you what to do and you have to do it!”
I printed out photos of the most famous queen alive today: Queen Elizabeth
Letter Q is for Queen preschool lesson, paper bag puppet craft
My smart little kiddos were quick to answer my “queen” questions:
“What is a queen’s house called?” Castle
“What is her chair called?” Throne
“What does she ride in?” Carriage
“What does she usually wear on her head?” Crown
“Who protects and fights for her?” Knights
I printed out photos of each for visual aids.

Finally, we made our paper bag puppets!

  • Place the paper bag, flap up, on a hard surface.
  • Lift the flap and glue stick liberally.
  • Press the chin/mouth part of the queen’s face on the glue. Take care not to glue the bag shut. You want the mouth to open and close.
  • Now close the flap and glue-stick the brown square on the bag like crazy!
  • Press the top of her head on that part, aim it so that the upper part of her lip covers the tongue. You should only see the tongue when the puppet’s mouth moves.
  • Done!

As I said, the letter Q has lots of possibilities but I was stretched to find enough material for any given Q word. As a result we read books on more than one Q topic:

That very same day,  we did a great Q-tip painting activity using the letter Q.  The kids had lots of fun. I love painting other ways than just paint and paint brush. So far we have used plastic forks, marshmallows, shaving cream, sponges and now q-tips.

Enjoy!

T is for Turkey Preschool Toilet Paper Craft

T is for Turkey is a perfect alphabet theme for preschool and kindergarten age children. This Letter T toilet paper roll craft also goes well with a Thanksgiving lesson.

kids crafts, kids activities, preschool crafts

Each school year we move up our Letter T lesson to coincide with Thanksgiving. This year I chose a craft for my preschoolers that was abundantly simple to do. The T is for Turkey Tissue Craft and our Tee Pee Preschool Craft are also great projects but this year we had so much going on that I needed one that would take less time. It worked out perfectly. Aren’t they cute?

preschool crafts, kids crafts, T is for Turkey, T is for Thanksgiving, toilet paper roll crafts

To assure victory, I pre-cut the feathers and other body parts: wattle, snood, beak, turkey feet. Then I glued the wattle, beak and snood into one piece so that placement would be easy.  Even so, we had some unique placements on a couple of these works of art. My favorite has to be the one with eyeballs on the feathers (below.) So adorable.

T is for Turkey Toilet Paper Roll Craft

T is for Turkey toilet paper roll craft for #kids

Supplies

Colored paper: red, yellow, goldenrod, orange
Empty toilet paper roll
Googly eyes
Glue stick
Child safe scissors

Directions
-Cut out four feather shapes – one from each color paper.
-Glue the four feathers together at the tip, making a “fan”
-Cut out an orange triangle (beak) and
-Elongated and roundish “squiggly” pieces from red paper (snood and wattle)
-Glue the three pieces so that the larger red part (wattle) is on the bottom, orange beak next and red elongate piece (snood) on top. Make sure the tip of the beak shows. This piece will be much easier for your little ones to handle. Older children can do it themselves.
-Rub (liberally) a long line of glue from your glue stick down one side of the toilet paper roll.
-Lay the glued side on the fan of feathers till it sticks.
-Glue on two googly eyes and “snood, beak, wattle” piece.
-Draw two forked “turkey feet” on yellow or orange paper and cut them out.
-Glue on the feet.
-Done!

Tip 1: be certain that the toilet paper roll is glued onto the feathers low enough that it will stand up unaided.

Tip 2: take a moment to talk about turkeys so that they know what a wattle, beak and snood are. You may want to find a picture book to show them or get a photo off the internet.

Enjoy!
