Painting With Forks? Kids Love It!

Spring picture painted by preschoolers using tempera paints and plastic forks #preschool #kidscrafts

Hey parents and teachers, this Letter S is for Spring preschool craft -which is painted using plastic forks instead of paint brushes – is so easy.  Your kids will love fork-painting! ♥  No frustration – guaranteed success!

Whenever we do a new craft in my classroom, I bring a sample for my students to see to give them some idea of where we are headed. It never stifles their creativity to see mine first. Each and every painting they produce is totally unique, which I love! I can hardly wait to see what they will look like.

When I started my sample copy, I was confident that I had everything I needed to do the job. What I hadn’t recognized was that my little tempera paints had gone dry. Rather than running to the store to buy more, I poured a little water into the paints, let them sit, and then blended them with a craft stick. It worked!

This picture was made by me, the teacher, as a sample for my students to see.
Use plastic forks as your paint brushes for the petals on the flowers.

These three paintings of tulips were made by preschoolers, all using plastic forks, paint brushes and tempera paints.

Do your kids love to paint? Try giving them a fork to do it! LOL Fork-painting is FUN! #preschool #crafts #painting #kidscrafts Share on X

How To Paint A Spring Picture Using A Fork

Supplies
Card or Cover Stock Paper
Tempera Paints
Small Paint Brush
Plastic Forks
Smocks

S is for Spring preschool craft; fork painting; spring preschool lesson
Directions
Start with putting smocks on your kids. Little children are messy. They can’t help it.
Cover them up with an old shirt or smock before you start.
Paint the stems and leaves of the flowers first, using a small paint brush and green paint.
Now, pour different color tempera paints on a plate.
Use a different fork for each color.
Paint tulip-shapes on the stems in various colors.
Let it dry.
Done!
Tip: if you have several children doing this project at the same time – I had 13 – pre-label each piece of cardstock with each child’s name before they start to paint. That way the person who is writing their names on them won’t get paint on themselves, as they might if you wait until after the picture is completed.

 Enjoy!

Easy Glittery Snowflake Craft for Kids

Easy glittery snowflake craft for #kids #crafts
This is the easiest preschool craft our class has ever made and so rewarding! Kids love glitter and glitter we did. I can think of a number of uses for this craft stick craft including using it as a Christmas mobile, an ornament and – what we used it for – a prop for our “Dance Like Snowflakes” song in our holiday show.  If you don’t have Popsicle sticks at home, you can buy small craft sticks instead.

Craft stick snowflake craft for #kids
Preschoolers will do best if you pre-glue the sticks for them. Children in kindergarten or older can do everything themselves.
Holiday crafts with craft sticks and glitter #cleaningtips #kidscrafts

Snowflake Craft Directions

Glue 4 craft sticks crisscross on top of each other.
Let them dry.
Using a Q-tip for young children or the bottle for older apply glue on the branches of the flake in designs and sprinkle lots of glitter on.
Shake off the excess.
Lay them out to dry.
Arts and crafts tip for easy glitter cleanup #kidscrafts #tips
Glitter Tip:  to minimize the mess and salvage unused glitter, use paper to catch the excess.
Take two piece of construction or copier paper.
Fold one in quarters and then unfold it.
Lay it on the table.
Fold the second sheet in half.
Lay it on top of the first piece.
Hold the snowflake over the pages and sprinkle glitter.
After the snowflake has been glittered, shaken and layed out to dry, take the top piece of paper and pour the excess back into the glitter container HOLDING IT OVER the second page.
There will be spillage.
Now you have that glitter on the second page and can also put it into the container.
Simple and effective!

How To Make Play Dough In The Microwave

I love making play dough. In fact, I am making some today!  There is something fun about developing this colorful toy by yourself,  knowing that a child  you love will have hours of play ahead of him. Making microwave play dough is by far the easiest way!
..
.
Microwave Play Dough Recipe #kids #preschool
..
.
Th classic recipe is cooked on the stove, which works great but it takes a lot of “elbow-grease” stirring and stirring. So, when I came across a recipe for MICROWAVE play dough, I had to give it a try.
..
.
Oh my goodness, is this so easy and the play dough turns out just as pliable and deeply colorful as ever. I won’t be making the old recipe again!

Ingredients

1 cup water
1 generous T cooking oil
10-20 drops Neon food coloring**
2 tsp. cream of tartar***
1/3 cup salt
1 cup bleached flour*
*Bleached flour is whiter and gives you a truer color.
**Neon food coloring is the most vivid.

Directions

Use a microwave-safe mixing bowl. This process takes about 5 minutes including prep.
Combine water, oil, food coloring and stir.
Add cream of tartar, and stir again.
Add salt, stir.
Gradually add flour and stir as you go along to prevent lumps.
Microwave on high for 30 seconds.*
Stir.
Another 30 seconds.
Stir.
A third time, 30 seconds.
Stir.
A fourth time, 30 seconds.
Stir.
It will now be in a ball.
Let sit for 2 minutes.

.

..

*Tip: Cooking time may vary depending upon microwave ovens and/or the bowls you use. I have found that sometimes I have to add another 30-60 seconds. So, consider total cooking time to be between 2 – 3 minutes at 30 minute intervals.
Remove from bowl and put the play dough ball on a dinner plate to cool.*
Wrap cooled play dough in plastic wrap or a zippered plastic food storage bag and store at room temperature.
*I spray the plate with cooking spray to make it easily removable from the plate.

How to make monkey puppets out of paper bags #preschool

Five Little Monkeys book is a beloved CLASSIC!

So, the lack of monkey material online presented an opportunity for me to create my own. Of course, when it comes to stories, ☑️ Curious George fills the bill.

We borrowed a DVD from the library with a series of Curious George cartoons on it. We also read Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed! The library has a number of great picture books that tell about monkeys. But I still needed a craft!

First Day of School *

  • Knowing how to start out a brand new class of preschoolers is tricky! If this is their very first school experience, there can be some “first day jitters” for sure.  I have used my USA Flag craft on the first day and it works well.  Our school begins each day with the Pledge of Allegiance, anyway, so I give them a simple mini lesson about the pledge and they slowly repeat after me, as we try saying it.  Our craft is more of that lesson … talking about what the flag represents.  We talk and glue at the same time.  Having Cheerios stars makes it extra fun!

Little 3-D marshmallow eyes give this turtle preschool craft some dimension – cuter than cute!
T is for Turtle preschool craft with 3-D marshmallow eyes #kidcrafts

Oh, how I have looked forward to teaching this lesson about turtles. In previous years, our preschool class studied  T is for Tee Pee,  T is for Turkey and T is for Teeth. It was time to do turtles – especially with the fond memories I have of “my own” turtle named Manfred. *Read the amazing story below.

Fun Facts We Learned About Turtles

  • Some live on land, some live in water.
  • The ones who live on land have stumpy legs. Sea turtles and other water-dwellers have webbed feet.
  • Turtles can be itty-bitty small or big huge!* (tortoises)
  • Turtles are reptiles.
  • Turtles eat a variety of foods. Some eat vegetation. Some eat insects. Some eat animals.
  • Baby turtles hatch from eggs using a “tooth” to chip their way out!

The Story:  How My Second Grade Class Found A Tortoise

T is for Turtle and T is for Tortoise preschool lesson with a fun real story about a tortoise
My Tortoise Story:  this real life event is affectionately remembered by me as “the best day ever!” Long long ago, in a place far, far away (Upstate New York) there was a second grade class –my second grade class–  and there was a little 8 year old girl in that class, that would be me. Though this event happened far in the past, the images will stay with me forever.
During recess, our class was playing outside on the playground. Suddenly, a real live huge and I mean GIGANTIC tortoise slowly crept out of the woods. He was so big that two children hopped on his back, to the great distress of the teachers. Shocked at what they were witnessing, the teachers couldn’t move fast enough. “Get off. Get off!”  and ” Keep away from his mouth!” they yelled to their giggling little students. The students did get off but he was soon surrounded by a sea of wondering children. Can you imagine our parents when they asked us how school was that day? LOL!  By the way, we named him “Manfred.”
Somebody – probably the principal  – called for help and soon the police arrived. It isn’t clear to me whether we were still outdoors when Manfred the tortoise was taken away but he did become a permanent resident of the local zoo. Manfred kept his name and he lived there for decades. He passed away a few years ago and it has been said that he was well over 100 years old. When I read the news,  I kind of felt like a friend had died. Manfred the Tortoise will always have a special place in my heart.

T is for Turtle Paper Plate Craft

This craft is simple and fun to make. I had run out of googly eyes so I came up with this brainstorm – marshmallow eyes! I had mini’s on hand. I cut them in half, put a dot of black paint on each and Voila! Eyes! I like them better than the googlies.

Use mini-marshmallows and a dot of paint to make 3-D eyes for your turtle craft

Supplies
Plain white paper plate
Green construction paper
Turtle part template on white paper
Marshmallows: mini and large
Small paintbrush
Cotton swab
Tempera paints
Stapler
Tape
Black marker
White school glue
T is for Turtle
Directions
Cut the small marshmallows in half.
Paint a black tempera paint pupil on each marshmallow “eye ball”*

You will find that they harden a bit in a short period of time.

Template for the parts to make a T is for Turtle paper plate craft with your #kids

How to Make Your Turtle Paper Plate Craft

Cut out the turtle parts from your template.
Tape the tail onto the legs part of the turtle.
Now you will have two parts: front and bottom
Trace the front and back onto green paper and cut them out.
Staple front to one side of a paper plate shell making sure that the “dome” part of the shell will be on the correct side. You don’t want the staples and tape to show.
Do the same on the other end for the bottom legs with tail of the turtle.
Tip:  you can also use some tape to secure it.
Glue the marshmallow eyes on the head.
Draw the nose and mouth using the marker.
Using large marshmallows, dot colored tempera paint all over the paper plate, decorating his shell.
You now have one adorable turtle!

Enjoy!

Love This D is for Dog Preschool Craft!

This adorable D is for Dog kids craft is perfect for preschool and kindergarten. Use it as a fun activity as you teach little ones all about dogs, dog houses – and the letter D!

Letter D is for Dog preschool craft and lesson #preschool

I first saw this craft on Crystal & Company. It has always been one of my favorite blogs and I get lots of super ideas there for preschool lessons and crafts.

This blog contains affiliate links. ♥

Take a look at this adorable toy=>☑️ Puppy Dog House Carrier With 5 soft cuddly plush toy dogs  It would be such a cute addition to this D is for Dog lesson, don’t you think?

It has been a few years since I taught D is for Dog. Why? Well,  D is for Dinosaur is a BIG favorite and my class only meets one day a week. I have to make a choice each year. One day per week = one letter per week. Doing it that way gets us through the alphabet just in time for summer break. So, I never got around to teaching the dog lesson to my preschoolers again.

This year, though,  I have several children coming back for a second year and I prefer to not repeat themes. That is why I went back in the archives to look for this lesson. I forgot how fun it is! I can hardly wait to teach it again.

Aren’t those stuffed animals cute? The kids all brought one to school that day.

This letter D craft uses a big letter D template with paw prints all around it. The center of the D is precut – by the teacher – with the straight part left attached. That is so that you can fold it back to be the door to a letter D doghouse!

D is for Dog Preschool Craft

Supplies

Colored copy paper

Dot markers

Dog pictures

Glue stick

Free Dog Craft Printables

Letter D printable with paw prints on it.

Letter D is for Doghouse printable to print on white card-stock paper.

Little pictures of dogs to cut out and glue inside the dog house.

Directions

Print the Letter D printable on colored copy paper (I used blue.)

Print the D is for Dog printable page to glue the D onto. Use white card-stock.

Print the dog pictures onto white card-stock and cut them out. [I laminated this page before cutting them out. My thought was that little hands with glue sticks can get sticky and the ink on the image might smudge. It is totally optional.]

Cut the blue letter D out.*

Cut the curved part of the center of the blue D, leaving the long side attached.*

Glue the D onto the white paper [Do NOT glue the center. It needs to fold open for the door of the “dog house.”]

Using a bingo marker (or a large marshmallow dipped in tempera paint) to put a big dot on every paw print.

Fold back the center of the D. Inside it, glue a picture of a dog. Your doghouse now has its furry occupant!

* Older children can do the cutting themselves. It is a great way to develop their cutting skills. The center part of the letter D is definitely the harder part to cut out and you may need to help them.

My class is a very young one – 3 year olds. Since the letter D lesson comes in the first part of the school year, I do a lot of the cutting for them in advance.
