Lyme Disease – A Danger For Dogs, Cats and Humans

What Is Lyme Disease?
Lyme Disease is a very serious and painful condition originating from a tick bite. Humans and animals can all get Lyme Disease. Learn where it comes from, how to avoid it and how to detect it. We’ll also discuss the cures.

What Causes Lyme Disease?
Lyme Disease is contracted from the bite of an infected deer tick or a Western black legged tick. These ticks are native to the Northeast and Midwest or Pacific Coast region, respectively. The bite of an infected tick transmits bacteria into its victim, thus causing Lyme Disease.
What Are Ticks?
Ticks are small insect-like creatures…arachnids, to be exact. They are found in grass, brush, wooded areas and on some animals. They are prevalent on deer and large rodents. Unlike other predatory insects such as mosquitoes, who “hit and run”, ticks bite and hang on to their victim. They “dig a well”, so to speak, feasting off of their blood.

How Not To Get Lyme Disease
“Prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Benjamin Franklin’s wise advice. He could have been talking about Lyme Disease! Lyme Disease is nothing to mess with. Humans and their pets should, first of all, avoid contact with deer. Lovely creatures as they may be to watch from afar, it’s best to keep a distance.

Next, if you are going to be camping or hiking in wooded or grassy areas, dress accordingly. Long sleeves, long pants, socks with real shoes (not sandals), everything tucked in well.

Especially if you are going to be in an area with identified cases of Lyme Disease, wear an insect repellent containing at least 20% DEET. Dogs and cats should also be treated with a repellent during the months of May – August which is known as “tick season”.

If you or your pet have come in contact with deer or have been hiking in wooded, brushy areas, make a close inspection to see if you have brought home a tick. They are the size of a small poppy seed, so be methodical and thorough in your search.
Early detection can make the difference between a relatively easy cure and long-term problems. If you are aware of a tick on your dog or cat, do not try to remove it yourself.
It is important that it be removed by your veterinarian. The vet has the expertise to remove the tick with special tweezers designed to keep the tick in tact–gently removing it’s jaws from its victim–and reducing the possibly of spreading the disease further.

How to Detect Lyme Disease
The initial sign of Lyme Disease in humans is a target-like red rash appearing on the skin. 70-80% of those who contract Lyme Disease display this rash. Seek immediate medical attention if you have one.

Additionally, people with Lyme Disease may have:
Symptoms similar to the flu
Headaches
Swollen, painful joints and muscles
Swollen lymph nodes
Extreme fatigue
Chills
Neurological disorders in late stages of the disease.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the complications of Lyme Disease in later stages can include Bells Palsy (affecting the facial muscles), pain, weakness, loss of feeling (numbness), visual problems, nerve damage in arms or legs, sleep disruption, and meningitis-like symptoms including severe headaches, stiff neck and fever.

Preventing Lyme Disease in dogs. #dogs #cats #lymedisease #health Ducks 'n a Row

Dogs and cats who contract Lyme Disease may display one or more of the following:

Sore back
Stiff joints / limping
(These arthritic symptoms may “wander” from one limb to another.)
Lethargy
Loss of appetite
Treatment for Lyme Disease
Catching the disease in its earliest stages increases the probability that it can be cured. Soon as symptoms arise–the oval ringed “target” rash (or any red rash), flu like symptoms, joint aches, etc.–see your physician. Especially if you have been in an environment where ticks may be present, it is imperative that you be tested.
According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention),Lyme Disease treatment will most commonly be an oral antibiotic such as amoxicillin. More advanced cases where the neurological system is affected may require use of intravenous antibiotics, instead.
As in the case of humans, diagnosed Lyme Disease in dogs and cats is treated with antibiotics.

The Horrors of Late Diagnosis
Late diagnosis of Lyme Disease can have horrific results. Palsy-like symptoms can take over the victim’s body.
A recent installment of the Dr. Phil Show takes a close, painful look at the result of late-stage Lyme Disease with heart-wrenching accounts of the lives that have been devastated by it. (Watch this compelling video below – note that the content is disturbing but important to know.)

How To Get a Throat Culture Without Gagging

How to get a throat culture without gagging!

Did you ever think it was possible to get a throat culture and NOT gag?

I always thought gagging was the miserable part of the deal. My opinion totally changed when my son’s pediatrician shared a nifty tip with us that WORKS. And the fun part is that she learned it from one of her little patients.

As Dr. Francis was giving a little boy a throat culture, the 4 year old grabbed his forefinger with his other hand. He was gripping that finger with all his might. The doctor asked him what he was doing. He exclaimed “It is so I won’t gag.” And he didn’t. No one does, if they remember to do it.

Having witnessed it work with my own little guy time and time again, I truly believe it is the answer. For some strange reason, it seems to circumvent to gag reflex. Try it! Just squeeze your index finger with the other hand while that swab is going down your throat. It is hard to believe that it could stop the gagging….but it does!

Seal Envelopes Without Licking Them

Wedding announcements

Whether constructing a mailing at the office or at home, there must be a way to get those envelopes sealed. Repeated licking of a multitude of envelopes is not the best practice.

First of all, it tastes bad.  Secondly, the glue may not be safe to ingest over and over again. Licking envelopes to close and seal them is not a great idea. For efficiency sake, you may wish to purchase self-sealing envelopes but, often, that is not a possibility. Invitation envelopes tend not to be self-sealing.

Here are some creative ways to seal an envelope without licking them!

Luxurious gold thank you notes with envelopes!

What kinds of bulk mailings might you be doing that require fluid to seal them? Is it bill paying day? Are you sending birthday party invites? Maybe it is an upcoming shower [baby or bridal] or wedding invitations? Graduations?

Mass mailings take place for all sorts of reasons including day to day outgoing mail for the business or volunteer job where you work. So, best practice is to seal the envelopes without licking them!

How To Seal Envelopes Without Licking Them

  • Use a simple household sponge. Dampen it with water and seal. This can have quality control problems, just as the envelope sealer may. You could release too much water and have a not-so-neat look on the back of your envelope. If you overdo it and you could even dampen the contents, as well. Note: make sure you use a new, clean sponge to avoid getting your envelope dirty.

  • Use a cotton swab or Q-tip. Dip the end of the swab in a small bit of water in a cup. Lightly swipe across the edge where the gum is. Seal. This method is what I just used in sealing invitation envelopes for the bridal shower I hosted and, later, the wedding invitations. It works very, very well! Cheapest and neatest method I’ve found.
  • Envelope Moisteners work brilliantly. These hand-held beauties have liquid glue inside, or allow you to simply put water in them. They dispense the fluid onto the glue portion of the envelop – instead of licking it – and you simply press it closed.
  • Glue Sticks – good ole “envelop glue” will do the trick. You can either use the standard school  glue sticks that you buy for your kids or you can purchase glue sticks that are designed specifically for sealing envelopes.

Help! The Devil Won’t Let Me Organize!

Yes, that’s right. It’s not my fault. Someone’s out to get me and it has to be the devil! Who is more opposed to order and in favor of chaos than he? Just when it looks like the coast is clear, “life” gets in the way and all my well-intentioned plans go right out the window. Today, puppy mischief put me over the top.

Yes, we got a puppy. The devil did not make us do it – it was our idea – and we are so glad we did but why can’t she follow the rules? Just as she catches onto things, she gets bored and starts projects of her own. Today was “rug day.” I think she was definitely taking advantage of a situation. I’ve been battling a cold and outdoor time in the snow was just “potty and in again”. She was bored. So, she chewed on rugs and carpets and moved them around a lot.

Big-sis dog LEXI totally not interested in RUG DAY, sleeping right through it.

Then my dear old dad and my much younger dear husband both had stays in the hospital. Dad 3 or 4 times. Hubby? One for 8 days with followup in-home nursing care for a month. How do you plan for that? You don’t!
Now, I have a cold. It’s a mild one but it slows things up.

So, what do you do when LIFE HAPPENS?

How do you move ahead when the tide is pulling you back?
BRILLIANT-ISH IDEA: using my own strategy featured in “Take Control, Clean a Drawer” today I took on little tasks that have been looming in the background – things that need to happen but NEVER happen because I’m too busy doing everything else.  To start with, I finally mounted the cute sign I got from my kids for Christmas. It’s been leaning up against the wall waiting to find a home.

Don’t you love it?
I measured, leveled and hung my new plaque on the kitchen wall.
And there it is!
And then I began the not-so-fun task of cleaning my window blinds in my dining-room  Not a great sick-day activity but they’ve been really bugging me. I have a bridal shower coming up in my home for my granddaughter, Sara. Better get started on them now. Tomorrow I’ll finish. (“Please, Lord?”)
Though I didn’t make great strides, it feels so good to have accomplished two things that have been waiting and waiting for attention.
Got big plans?
How’s your to-do list look?
When life gets in the way, how do you handle it?

When life gets in the way and #puppies get bored, what do you do? #family #tips Share on X
Enjoy!
