O is for Ocean Kids Activity That Fizzes

Ocean day is the most fun we have had in our preschool class ever – and that is saying a lot – we have LOTS of fun every week! This ocean fizzing sensory experience is a great activity for pre-k, kindergarten and even first grade. It appeals to a child’s natural fascination for the secret world under the sea, their love to play in water and it teaches them a little bit of science, as well!

Note: be sure to check out our paper plate, bottle cap O is for Ocean craft, too! Told you we had a great day 🙂

kids, preschool activities
Now, don’t be overwhelmed by all the parts of this activity. It is so easy to put together and worth every bit of the effort. Your kids will love it!
My assistant, Katie, first discovered this on Pinterest – it was originally created by Fun At Home With Kids. She sent me the link and I was wow’d! There was no doubt, we HAD to do this.
.

.
.

Overview: you will build an “oceanscape” for your students to observe, touch and play with “sea creatures.” They will also discover what happens when vinegar mixes with baking soda (FIZZ!!!)

kids, kindergarten, preschool, sea, ocean, kids science

Supplies

large clear plastic clothing storage bin
drop cloth for underneath the bin
small plastic toy sea creatures
sea shells
glass aquarium gems
river rocks
baking soda “rocks” that you will make
plastic squeeze condiment bottles
white vinegar
blue food coloring
baking soda (large box)
towels
smocks
dish pan
The bin that we previously used for a colored rice sensory table was perfect for this activity. It is actually a garment storage container that has wheels (wheels are NOT necessary but it just has them) and a lid.
You’ll want to protect your floor. We purchased and inexpensive plastic table cloth meant for a sea themed birthday party. It was a beautiful drop cloth for this activity. A plastic shower curtain liner would work just as well.
preschool, kindergarten, first grade, sensory play, ocean, sea

How To Make Baking Soda “Rocks”

Scoop dry baking soda into a large mixing bowl.
Gradually add water till it is a consistency that can be molded into balls.
Place a plastic sea creature toy or small sea shell inside the baking soda ball and mold it with your hands like you would a snow ball.
Gently place it on a tray to dry.
For effect, you may want to use a sea shell to imprint the outside of the damp baking soda rock.
Allow them to dry for at least 24 hours till hard.
Note that you still will want to handle them gently.

Vinegar Bottles

These plastic condiment bottles will be filled with white vinegar and a couple of drops of blue food coloring.
kids science, kids sensor play

How To Set Up Your Ocean Scene

Spread the table cloth/drop cloth on the floor.
Put the empty plastic bin on top of it.
Arrange rocks, glass gems and sea shells around the bin.
Stage plastic sea animals all around.
.
.
Time for your children to come in and see!*
*To keep the vinegar smell off their clothes, cover them in a big t-shirt or smock with sleeves.

sea life, baking soda and vinegar, under water, water play
Now, gently place baking soda rocks in the dry bin.
Give a blue tinted, vinegar filled condiment bottle to each child.
Have them squirt a rock and see what happens.
This is the science part! Baking soda + vinegar = fizz
Watch it fizz and see the look of delight on their faces!
After a while, the plastic sea creature will “emerge” from the rock.
Now fill the dish pan with cool water and gently pour it into the bin.
Let them play and have fun!

The Simple Way To Keep Clutter Out Of Your House!

“But, clutter is already in my house!” Well, this new habit will keep clutter out but it also can get clutter out, if it’s in there. All you have to do is start wherever you are.

Organizing tips, decluttering, home
Clutter has a life of its own, doesn’t it? It grows! Before long, you cannot find your stuff. Hey, you might have places where you can’t even MOVE! Last week we talked about organizing with 5 quick steps to take control. They work so, don’t ignore them!   This lesson presents a habit that, if you get serious about it, will keep clutter from piling up again.

plush hotel quality blue towels

Simple Rule = 1 item in? 2 items go out!

I just used this decluttering technique with some towels. Take a look at the frayed edges of my old towels. New ones were long overdue! I love my new, fluffy blue towels. They are luxurious.
Clutter has a life of its own ... it GROWS! #organizing #tips Share on X
organizing tips that work

Now, do I want to put those old towels back in my closet? No way.

So, I have 3 choices on what to do with them:

  1. Keep them in the garage for rags.
  2. Donate them to an animal shelter or veterinarians office (that’s my preference.)
  3. Or, toss them.

If I cannot get to a donation location in the next week, I will be throwing them out. If I do not get them out of my house quickly, they will stay forever!

TIp: Dragging your heels can turn this new habit into a nice intention that never comes to pass – beware!

Have you tried the 1 in, 2 out method? How did it go? Fun, isn’t it!

Enjoy!

denim fabric heart

Welcome to our party!  Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop is one of the longest lasting weekly gathering of mommy-bloggers ever.  No, we don’t have an exact statistic but I had the pleasure of creating it approximately 9 years ago.  Really!  And why is it still going strong? I think it is because people are friendly and love to appreciate each other’s hard work.  Bloggers work hard, yes they do.  But blogging is so much fun, most of us hardly notice♥  May I sincerely say, we are so glad you are here!  A party isn’t a party without guests. ♥

Please enjoy the features we share – much enjoyed contributions from the previous week’s party – and next, scroll down the page to the new posts that our blogging attendees will be sharing.

And, how do you show the bloggers appreciation?  Well, we love it when you leave a nice comment on a post  and PINS help us a lot!  When you pin one of our posts on Pinterest, it starts a chain reaction of others seeing it and pinning it which can result in lots traffic to our blogs!  Please pin pin pin!  And thank you!

It’s February!  For those who enjoy the Super Bowl or love Valentine’s Day, both are coming soon.  Have fun with your family and friends! Take time to enjoy it all!  If you need new ideas for party snacks or Valentine gifts, there will be some great ones in this party, I guarantee it!

Letter O is for Owl Preschool Craft

Letter O is for Owl toilet paper roll craft #kids
The Letter O is for Owl is one of the easiest crafts I have had my preschoolers make. I wanted to make sure that they could be successful at doing it so, instead of using this craft for a lesson in  paper cutting, I pre-cut the wings and other pieces myself: wings, feathers, eyes and beaks.

Googly eyes for crafts
Don’t worry, this lesson is educational. There is PLENTY of learning for them to do, as you can see. Each child looked at the sample owl that I made and modeled theirs accordingly. They had to identify what was a wing or a feather. Those shapes are very similar. They used their creativity in selecting colors and placement of pieces.
And, take a look — everybody’s craft looks like an OWL! Yipee!

Craft Supplies

Empty Cardboard Toilet Paper Rolls
White card stock paper
Colored copy paper
Child-safe scissors
Glue sticks and/ or Elmer’s Glue
Free printable templates for beaks, wings, feathers and eyes linked below.
colorful adjustable children's scissors

Safety Scissors for Kids, Retractable Small Scissors for Toddler Craft Ages 3-5 2-4 1-3, Cute Pink Toddler Craft Preschool 3Pcs

Instructions

Pinch two sides of one end of the cardboard toilet paper roll to make “owl ears.”
Print owl eyes on white card or cover stock.
Print beaks page on yellow or orange copy paper
Print wings and feathers page on a variety of colors of copy paper.*
*An alternative to that would be to print on white copy paper and have the child color the parts in with crayons or markers.
Cut the eyes, wings, feathers and beaks out.
Glue all the pieces on the toilet paper roll.
Tip:  use Elmer’s glue to attach the wings. Glue stick works fine for the other pieces and takes less drying. Your child will have to press the glued pieces with her hand for a minute to make sure that it sticks.

One thing that I did not do was to show them a video. I love to find short videos to enrich the lesson. There are some great owl videos but they were all too violent for tender young 3 and 4 year olds. Owls are great hunters and amazing to watch — every film showed it — but my little ones would have nightmares seeing sweet little bunnies and mice carried away to be an owl banquet!
